Using A Boppy For Pregnancy/postpartum Sleep

Boppy Nursing Pillow | Help Baby Sleep In Bassinet.

A Boppy Pillow can be used to aid in the comfort of pregnant or postpartum moms while theyre sleeping.

Safety First

The flexible C-shape of the pillow is great to place under an expectant moms pregnant belly to provide extra sleep support while she is sleeping on her side.

Many women struggle with hip pain or discomfort in their symphysis pubis toward the end of pregnancy . The symphysis pubis is the ligament that connects the two halves of the pubic bone, which open during childbirth to allow the baby to exit the uterus. In late pregnancy, the body produces the hormone relaxin which can cause additional stretching in these areas of the body, resulting in significant discomfort.

The Boppy Pillow can be used to keep you comfortable during this time. By placing it between your knees or thighs when sleeping, pressure and stretching are reduced, and you can sleep better. This is also the case during the postpartum recovery period, where you may need additional hip, pelvic, or abdominal support while sleeping.

The Boppy Recall Is A Reminder That There Are No Easy Answers To Baby Sleep

Last week, the Boppy Co. voluntarily recalled the more than 3.3 million Boppy loungers it has sold since 2015 after eight infants suffocated while sleeping in the modified pillow. Unlike other items recalled after similar deaths, such as the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play, which was advertised as safe for overnight sleep on its box, the Boppy lounger was never marketed as a sleep aid.

But such distinctions make little difference to a tired baby. As Robert S. Adler, the acting chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in announcing the recall: Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time even in products not intended for sleep . . . these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.

What this means in real time for real sleep-deprived parents is that the caregiver vacillates between the fear that something terrible might happen and the desperate desire for five more minutes of peace. Sometimes five more minutes wins.

Many sleep-deprived parents might amend Adlers statement to be: Infants sleep not enough of the time, and when they do, its almost always in a product not intended for sleep. The car seat sure. The stroller absolutely. The breastfeeding pillow that is covered in warnings in several languages that you shouldnt even think of leaving your baby alone in the same room with it while you go to the bathroom yes, please.

    Boppy Pillow Lounger Safety

Boppy Newborn Loungers and Boppy Nursing Pillows are similar, but they are made for different uses. For example, the Newborn Lounger has a gentler incline meant to cradle a baby while awake and sitting or resting.

In contrast, the Boppy Nursing Pillow or Boppy Pillow has a C-shaped design that supports babies better for nursing or bottle-feeding. Its also designed for tummy time and sitting.

Similar to the Boppy Newborn Lounger, parents and caregivers shouldnt let babies sleep in Boppy Pillows or Boppy Nursing Pillows.

    Most Montessori Baby Lounger: Topponcino

The Topponcino is a montessori at home must have baby lounger! Mama sleeps with it before baby arrives so it smells like her. It’s just a flat oval shaped mat, that’s firm but flexible.

Once baby arrives, the topponcino can be used to place baby for lounging, in a bassinet, or providing additional stability while holding baby .

Since mama uses it before baby arrives, and it can be used whether on the floor or when a new person, like a grandparent, is holding baby for the first time, it becomes baby’s first environment outside the womb really. Making it a great tool for added security as baby orients to their new world!

    What Age Is Cosleeping Safe

Beginning at the age of 1, co-sleeping is generally considered safe. In fact, the older a child gets, the less risky it becomes, as they are more readily able to move, roll over, and free themselves from restraint. Co-sleeping with an infant under 12 months of age, on the other hand, is potentially dangerous.

Infant Deaths Spark Recall Of More Than 3 Million Boppy Lounger Pillows

Regulators announced the recall of an infant lounging pillow Thursday after it said the item was connected to multiple deaths in recent years.

The Boppy Company Newborn Lounger has been tied to at least eight infant deaths where a child was placed on the lounger and found suffocated on their side or on their stomach, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020.

Robert S. Adler, the commissions acting chairman, called the incidents heartbreaking in a statement Thursday.

Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time even in products not intended for sleep and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market, Adler said.

More than 3.3 million Boppy loungers have been sold across the U.S. and Canada, the commission said.

A spokesperson for the Boppy Company said in the recall notice that the lounger is not an infant sleep product and “includes warnings against unsupervised use.”

The Boppy Company confirmed it was issuing a voluntary recall of the products and offering refunds to customers on its website.

Infants can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow or soft bedding, that obstructs breathing, the company said on its website.

Nursing Pillow Misuse Led To Three Infant Deaths Coroner Says

    Boppy® Side Sleeper Pregnancy Pillow

Following three nursing pillow-related deaths, coroner Graham Hetrick is speaking out about the danger of allowing babies to sleep on these curved pillows.

The deaths appeared to have been caused by the infants inability to pull themselves up after sliding down into the curve, which ultimately led to accidental suffocation.

The head starts pushing back on the curve of the pillow and the head goes forward, Hetrick told ABC 27, noting that nursing pillows by brands such as Boppy come with explicit instructions not to use the pillows for anything except feeding.

Due to the natural weaving, the bed pad measured a little longer for some reviewers. In that case either give it time for the basket to stretch or one reviewer just trimmed the pad down.

Parents can also appreciate that once baby outgrows the moses basket, it can be used for storage of things like bedding, toys, or books.

Best Baby Lounger For 12 Months And Beyond: Dock

    Boppy Pillow Review – Babylist

While most baby loungers are intended for the first 3 to 9 months of life, some kids absolutely LOVE them and the Dock-A-Tot Grand can be the exact upgrade your baby needs as they move into the toddler years. And in my experience, they can actually make the toddler years easier than a baby lounger in the early months!

Dock-A-Tot Grand is designed for babies from 9 to 36 months old which is when we got the most use out of ours!

You can use it as a diaper changing spot, cozy spot for reading or lounging, or to help with transitons.

While baby loungers do not follow the ABCs of safe sleep for babies, once your child is in that older toddler range you may be able to use the Dock-A-Tot Grand instead of a pack-n-play for sleep while traveling .

Cross check with your pediatrician before doing so to get their thoughts for where your child is at specifically and stay tuned as the Consumer Product Safety Commission approved a new federal rule for infant sleep products that will go into effect in 2022 with new regulatory standards.

A Boppy Strains Their Neck And Back

When your baby is sleeping, you should always lay them down on their back on a flat surface to allow them to sleep in peace. Typically the nursing pillow restricts your baby to one sleeping posture. If you have a toddler who has not yet mastered how to change their neck position, theyll strain. It will cause injuries on their neck and back if you are not around to help them out. The boppy pillow will make your baby uncomfortable and cause the neck muscles strain with the new pressure. The pressure can cause pain on their neck and result in a weak neck, making your baby unable to properly hold the weight of their head.
