Pbde Levels Higher In North America

Unsurprisingly, then, levels of PBDE in North America are reported to be higher than those in Europe and Asia, and the body burden of PBDEs is three- to nine-fold higher in infants and toddlers than in adults . This is likely because of exposure to maternal milk and dust.

The most common PBDE isomers found in humans are Tetra-, Penta-, and Hexa-BDEs. PBDEs have a long half-life, meaning that they persist in the environment. Studies suggest that these chemicals may cause :

    • Disruption to thyroid function
    • Neurodevelopmental deficits and long-lasting behavioral and motor activity anomalies
    • An increased risk of cancer

Antimony, Boric Acid, and Halogenated Flame Retardants are some other commonly used chemicals found in mattresses. Antimony is a toxic heavy metal which can cause eye, heart, and lung problems. Boric Acid can cause eye and respiratory irritation.

Bromine, chlorine, fluorine and iodine are elements known as halogens. Halogenated flame retardants act directly on flames, interfering with the chemistry of the flame to prevent fire. Chlorine and bromine are both used as flame retardants, but brominated retardants are the most effective.

HFRs have been linked to a raft of health concerns, including :

    • Abnormal reproductive development and delayed puberty
    • Neurobehavioral changes, damage to brain and nerve function
    • Thyroid disruption

Most mattresses in retail store have been marked up 6 – 12 times by the time they are sold. You are paying a lot of money for gimmicks, retail markups, sales commissions and wholesaler’s profits.

Tuft & Needle manufacturers their mattresses for direct sale to customers, cutting out middlemen and offering a cost savings to you.

    Materials

No Latex is used in the Tuft & Needle mattress. Latex pushes back the more you put pressure on it, causing painful pressure points.

What Type Of Foam Is In Tuft And Needle

The Tuft & Needle mattress is made with high-density polyurethane foam. This type of foam is known for its durability and support. It is also a very popular type of foam used in mattresses because it is relatively affordable.

Consumers have commented favorably on the mattresses, which are both designed to be comfortable and supportive. Because of its lightweight construction, the Mint mattress has a soft and comfortable feel to it. Mint mattresses feature a unique foam design that gives them a distinct feel. Latex foam is popular, but it can be heavy and cause pressure points to occur on the body. Tuft & Needle mattresses are lightweight all-foam mattresses that eliminate some of the same problems as other types of mattresses. It is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a comfortable bed if you are looking for a budget-friendly and easy-to-shop mattress such as the Mint or the GhostBed Classic.

The Casper Wave Hybrid and Tuft & Needle Hybrid both sleep cool and provide excellent back sleeper support, but thanks to the Waves softer feel and more enveloping surface, its better for side sleeping, while the T& N Hybrid is best for stomach sleeping.

One major difference between these two beds is how they feel. The Casper Wave Hybrid has a memory foam hug and very little motion transfer, compared to minimal contouring and a bouncy feel on the T& N Hybrid.

    Who I Bought From

My boyfriend and I bought our most recent mattress from Sleep Nation, a local Denver Company.

The reasons we did so were:

  • Budget: we were able to get a model with organic latex within our budget
  • Local: The mattresses are made in Denver
  • Plant Based: 7″ of plant based memory foam sits underneath 3″ of latex
  • Letex is certified by GOLS
  • Plant based memory foam is 50% plant oils 50% petro mix
  • Covering is made of organic cotton
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US®, GOLS Latex, GOTS mattress cover
  • 15 year warranty, and free recycling of your old mattress, will accept your mattress back for recycling when it’s run its course.
  • My boyfriend and I were able to get a Broadway Model on clearance, so it was a steal. if I had to pay full price I definitely would have gone in a different direction.

Also, our new bed is outrageously comfortable! We’ve been referring to it as “the cloud” and we both feel as though we’ve been sleeping better since switching from the traditional spring mattress we were on before.

    What I Looked For

  • In my budget – our new bed needed to be affordable, but mattresses are expensive, no matter how you slice it.
  • Plant based – I wanted everything to be plant based when it came to my mattress. For everything to be eventually compostable was the dream, but as long as petroleum wasn’t involved, I was willing to give it a shot.
  • Ideally organic – I was willing to compromise on the organic part, just knowing that my mattress was minimally plant based was the biggest thing I cared about
  • Ideally Local – I was also willing to compromise on finding a local mattress company, but I was really hoping I’d be able to do so!

Why We Are Concerned About Polyurethane Mattresses

Why am I so against polyurethane mattresses? For a number of reasons. First, polyurethane foam is produced through the same energy-hungry process used to make petroleum from crude oil. This process involves two main ingredients: polyols and diisocyanates, which are reacted together using a variety of catalysts, including dibutylin .

Polyols themselves are substances created through a chemical reaction using propylene oxide . As for diisocyanates, toluene diisocyanate is the most common isocyanate involved in the manufacture of polyurethane.

Both methyloxirane and TDI are recognized as carcinogens by the State of California and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Theyre known to cause tumors and are both listed on the List of Toxic Substances under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Studies in animals have demonstrated that propylene oxide is a direct-acting carcinogen .

You know things are bad when even the somewhat beleaguered US Environmental Protection Agency whose inspections have fallen to an all-time low under the Trump presidency has issues with the chemicals used in polyurethane manufacture. Indeed, the EPA considers the manufacturing plants producing polyurethane foam to be major sources of myriad hazardous air pollutants. Such pollutants include:

    • Methylene chloride
    • Toluene diisocyanate itself
    • Hydrogen cyanide

Flame Retardants And Other Vocs In Mattresses

Have you ever wondered what that weird smell is when you unroll or uncover a new mattress? Most likely, that is the lovely aroma of volatile organic compounds , including a heady mix of flame retardants and other chemicals.

VOCs, many of which are classed as carcinogens, are emitted as a breathable gas from mattresses, carpets, furnishings, paint, cleaning supplies, printer ink, and other household products. Concentrations inside the house can be ten-fold higher than outdoors and, consider this, you spend a good 7-9 hours a night with your face smushed into your mattress. If youre an infant, you may spend more than 12 hours a day in close contact to a source of VOCs, with studies showing increased concentrations of VOCs in incubators due to mattresses off-gassing, especially when the air is hot and humid.

Even though manufacturers claim that the polyols and isocyanates in mattress foam have reacted and are no longer volatile, older polyurethane foam mattresses are especially bad for off-gassing as the mattress breaks down into dust. VOCs in mattresses also include a variety of chemicals used as stain and soil repellents, antimicrobial treatments , adhesives, and flame retardants.

How Durable Are Tuft & Needle Organic Jersey Sheets

Avocado vs Tuft and Needle Mattress (REVIEW)

This set of sheets should be fairly durable. Because they are made with 100 percent cotton, they should be less likely to pill than a jersey knit made with synthetic fibers. Jersey is also resistant to wrinkles, especially because the fabric is naturally stretchy. That makes these sheets a more low maintenance product than woven cotton sheets, if you want to avoid wrinkles in your bedding.

Fire Safety: The Most Dangerous Part Of Your Mattress

Mattresses are required by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to meet flammability laws, which previously meant that they were almost always treated with bromated or chlorinated flame-retardant chemicals, typically one of the first three on this list:

    • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers. PBDEs are associated with hormone-disruption, and neurodevelopmental delays, including lowered IQ. The European Union has banned the use of PBDEs in electronic devices. Studies show that children in the United States have higher levels of PBDEs than adults do. Oh, and heres the kicker: they dont even work very well at stopping fires.
    • Firemaster 550. This nasty chemical cocktail is made with bis tetrabromophthalate . Yes, you saw that word in there: phthalate. TBPH is nearly identical to to DEHP, the phthalate banned in childrens products due to evidence of carcinogenicity and developmental toxicity.
    • Chlorinated tris. This is the notorious chemical that was removed from childrens pajamas in the 1970s because it was shown to cause cancer.
    • Halogen-free flame retardants. This newer class of chemicals is believed to be much less likely to bioaccumulate than bromated flame retardants. I still prefer my mattresses to be free of even these.

In addition to these notoriously toxic flame retardants, companies may use some of the following ingredients to pass flammability tests: boric acid, silica, melamine, vinylidene chloride, and fiberglass.

    What Is Sustainable Bedding Anyway

While it might seem that natural is good and synthetic is bad, its more complex than that. There are actually environmental issues linked to most natural materials, explained Kiersten Muenchinger, an associate professor of product design with a focus on sustainability at the University of Oregon. After all, you still need to use resources to produce these materials. And there is little regulation on the use of the word natural outside of food labeling, noted Maggie Lee, who manages the SEA circular project at the United Nations Environment Programme.

There are legitimate reasons to shop for natural products: You may want to reduce the number of petroleum-based objects you send into landfills or you may be sensitive to the chemicals and strong odors often found in some synthetic products. Foam mattresses can also release potentially harmful volatile organic compounds into the air over time especially in the first few days you have the mattress .

Sometimes, natural materials can also enhance the sleep experience. Materials like cotton, tencel and wool can provide additional breathability to your mattress, which can help you sleep cooler. We know that the quicker your body temperature falls, the quicker you fall asleep, said Dr. Seema Khosla, medical director of the North Dakota center for sleep. Sleep environment can have a lot to do with your core body temperature drop, she said.

    What Makes A Mattress Nontoxic

    Tuft And Needle Mattress Review

While its not possible to buy a completely organic mattress, there are ways to limit your exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals.

Many mattresses, and other indoor furniture that contains foam, in particular, let off gaseous compounds called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. This is especially true of brand-new mattresses in a box. They can release VOCs when theyre first opened, as they dont get to off-gas much before getting compressed.

Plastics and flame-retardant additives can be sources of VOCs. However, youre not likely to find a mattress without any plastics and flame retardants.

Instead, consider shopping for a mattress that has certifications demonstrating low VOC emission and is made with organic materials. These can both help decrease your exposure to VOCs.

We looked for mattresses made of safer materials that come with third-party certifications including the following:

Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Breakdown

The Tuft & Needle comes in one firmness, which is medium firm. For most individuals, this feel is likely to strike a comfortable balance between softness and support.

A cover crafted from a blend of micro polyamide and polyester encases the mattress. The material has a soft hand-feel and is also fairly breathable. For an additional $50 in any size, customers can opt for a cover treated with HeiQ NPJ03 antimicrobial protection to safeguard the mattress against harmful microbes that can affect its overall lifespan.

The comfort layer consists of 3 inches of T& N Adaptive Foam. This proprietary polyfoam is high-density, lending to its durability. While it cradles the sleeper to relieve pressure points, it is infused with graphite and ceramic gel to draw heat away rather than trapping it against the sleepers body.

A 7-inch layer of polyfoam acts as the support core. This polyfoam has an open-cell structure so that air can circulate through it to help cool the mattress. Due to its high density, this layer resists sagging and long-term impressions while providing even support.
