Absolutely No Fire Socks

FR Socks are produced using a variety of techniques and ingredients. Most contain fiberglass others use heavy chemical treatments. They are intended to be safe but expose the user to other risks. To give you a better idea the video below shows how an FR Sock is applied to a mattress. Harvest does not use FR Treated Socks.

Why Do Mattresses Need A Fire Retardant Anyway

In the first place, its the law.

According to the 2007 Standard for the Flammability of Mattress Sets from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, mattresses must meet the federal safety standard for open-flame fire resistance.

A 2002 government report found that an estimated 20,800 fires were attributed to mattress fires each year. These fires cause 2,200 injuries, 380 fatalities, and $104 million in property loss.

In 2007, the new standard of flammability in mattresses that caught fire helped give families more time to escape safely before their home fires burn out of control.

You can see below the difference between a conventional mattress and a CPSC-compliant mattress when exposed to just 3 minutes of an open flame.

Fact. a fire-resistant mattress can save your life.

This act alone was estimated to save as many as 270 lives and prevent 1,330 injuries each year. A decade later, researchers found that injuries decreased by 34%, and deaths plummeted by 82%.

Why You Need A Fiberglass

Posted by Meagan Kay on June 11, 2021

Fiberglass is a composite material made by reinforcing plastic with glass fibers and synthetic chemicals. Its flexible, low-cost, and super durable, which is why its used in a wide range of industries for a variety of products. In fact, many manufacturers use fiberglass in their mattresses.

Fiberglass is perhaps the last material youd expect to find in a mattress. But its a cheap way to meet industry fire regulations and keep you safe while sleeping in your cozy, comfy yet flammable bed. Fiberglass is especially common in memory foam mattresses, which are extremely prone to fire damage.

How does fiberglass work as a flame retardant? As a temperature insulator and thermal barrier, fiberglass acts as a protective layer that, if your mattress catches on fire for any reason, will melt instead of burning freely. It also slows down the spread of the fire itll take longer for the flames to reach the combustible materials on the inside of your mattress.

Sounds like a good thing, right? Well not so much.

Look For Latex Or Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory Foam Mattress Without Fiberglass

Latex comes from the rubber tree. Its an organic material thats popular in the design and manufacture of modern mattresses. Latex provides a comfortable and firm sleeping surface that contours to your body shape and body weight, providing excellent support.

There are various types of latex available for mattresses.

  • Certified Organic Latex
  • Latex Blends
  • Synthetic latex

Certified organic latex is the best option for your mattress, but natural latex is a close second. Natural latex provides a dense, impenetrable surface. As a result, dust mites cant burrow into the material like they do in a spring mattress.

Did you know that after 10-years of use, a spring mattress doubles its weight? This addition of weight comes from all the dead skin, mite feces, and dust accumulate in the bed.

Memory foam is a popular option for your new mattress. Make sure you go with new-age memory foams that feature gel infusion. Older-model memory foam mattresses have issues with heat dispersion through the foam layers, creating hot-spots on the bed.

The new gel-infused memory foam mattresses absorb body heat, moving it to the edges of the mattress. The mattress will often feature holes through the top layers of the mattress, providing better airflow to your skin on warm nights.

How Do You Clean A Mattress That Contains Fiberglass

If youve looked at the law tag on your mattress only to discover that it contains fiberglass, then you absolutely must NOT remove the cover. In which case you should spot clean your mattress cover. Better yet, purchase a mattress protector to make cleaning easier and limit the chance of the cover tearing and releasing fiberglass particles.

How To Tell If Your Mattress Contains Fiberglass

In many cases the mattress tag will clearly state that it uses fiberglass for its fire barriers and that you shouldnt remove the cover. Other times the fiberglass isnt clearly mentioned, often hiding behind names like silica. Sometime the cover even includes a zipper for manufacturing purposes that you arent meant to open. Many people see the zipper and assume that it means that they can remove the cover to wash it. DO NOT TAKE THE COVER OFF YOUR MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Thats doubly true for all of the brands on the list at the bottom of this article or any other mattress that contains fiberglass.

In this article, well list the five best fiberglass-free brands in 2021. Most of these brands are eco-friendly and are some of the best mattresses available today. Lawsuits Say Mattress Companies Failed To Warn Of Fiberglass Dangers

Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are specifically looking into claims that some mattress manufacturers and sellers failed to properly warn consumers of the safety issues related to fiberglass mattresses and may have even invited consumers to use the products in such a way that put them at a greater risk for injuries and property contamination.

All mattresses sold in the United States must contain a fire-retardant sock or sleeve under the mattresss cover. This protective layer helps keep the mattress from catching fire and potentially slows a fires spread.

Several types of fibers can be used as flame retardants, but it has been alleged some mattress manufacturers chose the cheaper alternative in fiberglass.

Removing the cover of a fiberglass-containing mattress can present certain risks. One familys lawsuit alleges that fiberglass dust was dispersed into the air upon removal of their mattress cover, penetrated the HVAC system and subsequently spread throughout the entire home. They claim the loose particles became embedded in carpeting, clothing and furniture, and that the family experienced symptoms ranging from itchiness and nose bleeds to prolonged vomiting from the fiberglass.

Other health effects linked to fiberglass exposure include rashes, eye redness, and irritation of the nose, throat, and stomach.

What’s The Big Deal About Fiberglass

Family forced to leave home over fiberglass mattress cover

The importance of getting a mattress without fiberglass can’t be overstated. For starters, a mattress with fiberglass has the potential to leave tiny shards of glass throughout the bedroom, putting you in harm’s way.

This happens if you remove the mattress cover or unzip it. Many mattress brands don’t tell you to avoid doing that, so many people end up accidentally creating a hazardous mess.

It can also seriously irritate your body. You may experience stomach irritation, eye problems, and rashes after sleeping on a mattress with fiberglass.

Fiberglass Free Mattress Buying Guide

So what is fiberglass and why is it found in some mattresses?

Fiberglass is a type of reinforced plastic thats made from a range of natural minerals and manufactured chemicals and is used by some manufacturers in their mattresses as part of their fire barrier in order to meet flammability standards.

However, in the case of mattresses, rather than taking the form of an obvious solid sheet of plastic, the fiberglass is integrated more subtly.

More specifically, the fiberglass is typically infused or woven into the inner mattress cover hidden from view where most people will never realise that they are sleeping on a type of material that in certain forms can cause eye redness, inflammation of the nose and throat, and aggravation of pre-existing conditions like asthma and bronchitis .

Most people only become aware of the fiberglass in their mattress when they innocently unzip the cover for washing purposes or a hole develops in the cover.

At which point, the room is filled with tiny shards of fiberglass that contaminate the surrounding bedding, furniture, and carpets even working their way into the air conditioning where these glitter-like particles can spread through the entire house.

Whilst manufacturers often state on the label of the mattress not to remove the cover, many users dont realise the potential severity of doing so in a mattress that contains fiberglass.

How Do You Clean Mattresses With Fiberglass

If your mattress gets stained and you know it’s got fiberglass, be sure to never remove the cover. You use a spot cleaner and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You can also dip a cloth in water and soap mixture and spot clean by rubbing the stain.

Another thing you can do is use baking soda on the stains, it works especially well with liquids, including urine. Sprinkle baking soda over the stains and leave it to work for 24 hours. Then, vacuum all remaining soda with a vacuum cleaner.

To protect your mattress from stains, use a waterproof mattress protector and a mattress topper. Be sure that they are machine washable to keep your bed clean without ever having to remove the mattress cover.

This makes it easy to determine if their beds are up to your standards.

Toxic Compounds Make Toxic Products

Looking for a Memory Foam Mattress made without fiberglass ...

EPA findings confirm the toxicity of these materials. These volatile organic compounds make their way in almost all manufactured household products, including carpets, furniture and of course mattresses and even pillows. Go figure.

Duke University completed clinical evaluations researched certain components used in memory foams. Those included isocyanates. The isocyanate compounds researched were acetone, benzene, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, methylene chloride and 1,1,1 -trichloroethane. What they discovered was that even the brief exposure caused damage. Even the minimal amount of toxicity of these compounds causes asthmatic attacks.

Diisocyanates are also found as ingredients that increase flame resistance in foam mattresses. They are highly reactive compounds. In their raw forms, these can cause respiratory and skin damage. And if that alone isnt bad enough they are carcinogenic to humans. During the manufacturing process, many compounds mix together. Diisocyanates react with polyols to produce the flexible memory foam. Polyols are binding compounds that are essential to creating the polyurethane foam.

Hi lizzz,

i bought my king matress from the sears outlets its a 10 inch memory foam with a 2 inch gel top that comes in a box im not really sure about the model so sorry!

There will be a law tag sewn into the covering of the product, usually at the head of the mattress. As youre making a claim of the product using a certain type of FR material, it would be beneficial to know the exact name of the mattress itself.

i called and emailed them this was there response:Liz, our mattresses are not designed to be used without the cover. Please contact the store you purchased from, they may be able to assist with a warranty claim. when i called the lady she said to call sears for a matress replacement they werent much help

While warranties come from the manufacturer, they usually require you to go through the retailer where you purchased the product to file such a claim. Im not aware of the model which you have, and it may not even have a cover than was intended to be washed, so it may be something that has voided your warranty by washing it and ripping it.Was this a new product?PhoenixResearching for a mattress?… Be sure to read Click here for if purchasing from Our Trusted Members. For any mattress questions on our forum
