Foundation + Metal Bed Frame

Leesa Mattress Review 2021 – Is It Good For Back Sleepers?

One of the most common foundation setups youll find is a foundation and metal bed frame duo. Since a basic wood foundation doesnt have legs, putting it on a metal frame lifts your bed off the ground. This means you get some room under your bed for extra storage. This is a low-profile, basic bed base option, and you can usually get both of these pieces without breaking the bank.

Using a foundation with a frame is a great choice for anyone who wants to make sure they are taking the best possible care of their mattress while sticking to a budget. It’ll give you all the support you need and you’ll have cash left over for a lush new set of pillows.

Pros:

  • Metal frame provides sturdy mattress support
  • Slats provide good airflow
  • Offers a small amount of under-bed storage

Cons:

  • This is a good basic setup, so if you’re looking for bells and whistles, you won’t find them here
  • Foundation and bed frame are usually sold separately

What Is The Leesa Mattress Made Of

The Leesa is a 3-layer all-foam mattress that combines pressure relief and support for a balanced feel. Lets take a look at whats inside.

  • Mattress cover: The Leesa Original mattress is wrapped in a striped, grey cover made from twill fabric that promotes breathability and softness.
  • Comfort layer : The top foam layer is made from polyfoam rather than memory foam for added breathability and ease of movement, creating a plush and responsive surface.
  • Transition layer : The Leesa Originals transition layer consists of memory foam, which provides close contouring and excellent pressure relief.
  • Support foam : At the bottom of the Leesa Original mattress is a high-density polyfoam layer that adds stability and durability.

The Leesa Original mattress is the bed that made Leesa a household name. This 3-layer memory foam mattress marries plush, responsive polyfoam with deeply cradling memory foam to create an excellent option for sleepers with aches and pains or side sleepers looking for pressure relief.

Weve put the Leesa mattress to the test in the Mattress Advisor lab to help you decide if its the mattress of your dreams. In this review, well share how the Leesa performed, what sleeping positions its ideal for, and more.

Do You Need A Box Spring With A Hybrid Mattress

Unlike foam beds, hybrids contain more robust support cores made from metal springs. This means a standard hybrid may not require as much support as an all-foam model. However, every hybrid is constructed differently. To find the best support for your mattress, consult the manufacturers guidelines.

    Trial Period And Warranty

Leesa offers a 100-night risk-free trial period and suggests that buyers try their mattress for at least 30 nights. If you aren’t satisfied, they will coordinate the pickup of the mattress or foundation. You don’t have to worry about attempting the impossible task of fitting everything back into the box. There is no fee for returns unless you’re in Alaska or Hawaii, in which case it will cost $100.

There is also a 10-year mattress warranty. The warranty is limited to physical flaws in the cover or mattress craftsmanship and mattress deterioration that results in an indentation of more than an inch. The warranty covers the full replacement of the mattress, but the buyer has to pay for shipping.

Leesa offers a “white glove” delivery service in select locations. For an extra $100, a two-person team will deliver your mattress and foundation, unbox it, set it up, and remove the packaging. For $50 more, they will remove your old mattress and box spring, which is helpful since most municipalities charge extra for disposing of mattresses. I chose not to go with the white glove service because I wanted to get the full buying experience.

Leesa Original Hybrid Pain Relief Performance

How well a mattress relieves pain is also an important factor to consider. To measure how solid of a job the Leesa Original Hybrid does at relieving pain, I tested out its pressure relief. Pressure relief refers to how evenly a bed distributes your weight. Evenly distributed weight relieves pressure at sensitive areas, like the hips, shoulders, and lower back.

To test this out, I used a pressure map. I put the pressure map on top of the bed and laid on top. The map recorded how much pressure built up while I laid on the mattress in different sleeping positions. Heres what you need to know when youre looking at the results below: Areas of blue to green indicate low pressure, while areas of orange to red indicate high pressure.

Back Pain Based on these results, Id recommend the Leesa Original Hybrid to back sleepers with back pain as it showed all low pressure. Id recommend it to some side sleepers with back pain as well, as long as they dont suffer from joint pain around the shoulders or hips. I think its too soft of a mattress to help alleviate back pain for stomach sleepers.

Shoulder Pain Back sleepers with shoulder pain should feel comfortable on this mattress and get the cradling they need. Id steer side sleepers with shoulder pain to look for a softer mattress and stomach sleepers with shoulder pain to look for a firmer mattress.

Best Bed in a Box Mattress – Our Top 7 Picks!

The Leesa Original mattress supports every sleeping position. The close body contouring cushions pressure points for side and back sleepers, while the soft top layer and reliable support work well for most stomach sleepers. We do not recommend the Leesa for heavier stomach sleepers, as the all-foam mattress may be too soft to properly hold up heavier sleepers hips.

The Leesa Original mattress has been tested for its weight capabilities. Its able to support sleepers who weigh up to 300 lbs. While we love the Leesa for plus-size back sleepers, stomach and side sleepers who weigh more than 230 lbs. may feel more support on a mattress with innerspring coils, like the Saatva Classic. Heavier side sleepers will need additional cushioning thats balanced by a stronger support base.

Do Memory Foam Mattresses Need Box Springs

By Sarah Anderson, Certified Sleep Science Coach

If youre buying a new memory foam mattress and have a box spring youve been using for the past few years, you might be considering combining the two. And why not? Isnt it a great way to give your new bed some bounce and height?

Actually, its not. Placing your new memory foam mattress on top of a box spring will likely cause it to sag within a few short years. Plus, most companies void a mattress warranty if you pair your memory foam mattress with a box spring. If your mattress loses support or falls apart because of a box spring, you wont be able to file for a warranty claim.

Follow these steps to flip your mattress:

  • Carefully rotate the mattress 90 degrees.
  • Raise up the mattress to prop it on its side.
  • Flip the mattress gently onto the new side and lower it to the bed.
  • Rotate the mattress 90 degrees in the same direction so that the previous head and feet sides are switched.
  • While flipping the mattress, you can take the opportunity to vacuum or spot-clean the hard-to-reach places underneath the mattress. Its also a good idea to clean the mattress while youre at it.

Keep in mind: it can be tough to move a mattress on your own. If needed, grab a friend to help you flip yours.

How Long Do Mattresses Usually Last

The average mattress should last between seven and ten years. There are, however, a variety of circumstances that might affect the longevity of a mattress. Bed durability is influenced by a variety of factors including the initial construction quality of the mattress, materials utilized, and even the weight and sleeping patterns of those who use the bed. 7

Do You Need A Box Spring

If youve been shopping around for a mattress and bed, you may have noticed that box springs are no longer that popular.

Most online mattress companies sell solid metal or wooden foundations. And even when they sell a box spring its most likely one without springs.

The reason for this is that mattresses have changed quite a bit from decades ago.

    Heat Dissipation Over Time

    5 minutes 86.1°

After we got off the mattress heat dissipation started off slow, only dropping 2.2 degrees within the first minute. However, by the 2-minute mark, the mattress had reached 86.5 degrees .

Subjectively speaking, I found the mattress breathed well and was comfortably cool during our tests.

Like most all-foam mattresses, the Leesa Studio isnt a miracle worker, but it should be suitable cool enough for most sleepers.

The relatively thin 1.5 memory foam layer on top will help to avoid excessive heat retention issues and the 1.5 poly foam layer below aids in airflow.

Both of which work together to improve the overall cooling profile.
