How Do You Care For Hypoallergenic Pillow Covers

Allerease Ultimate Protection Pillow Protector Dust Mite and Allergy-proof Pillow Cover Review

You care for and clean your allergy pillow cases just as you would your regular bedding. Just machine wash on warm or hot, and gently tumble dry. Do not use bleach. Pillow covers can be washed every two weeks. Mattress covers only need to be washed two to three times per year. However, some may wash their allergy bedding more frequently depending on specific conditions.

The Most Cooling Option

For those who tend to sleep hot, many mattress protectors can feel too hot and restrictive. Luckily, the top of this premium mattress protector from PlushDeluxe is made from bamboo fibers, so it’s cooling, breathable, hypoallergenic, and moisture-wicking all while remaining waterproof and protective against dust mites. It’s also noiseless and free from PVC, phthalates, and vinyl.

  • Material: 40% bamboo, 60% polyester
  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

One reviewer wrote: “Have had this mattress cover for about a week and just realizing now that I have not woken up to cold and clammy sheets drenched in sweat like I was before! If your mattress runs hot and you run hot, this is life-changing.”

Best Pillow Covers For Dust Mites

Pillow covers for dust mites are designed to protect your pillow from dust mites and other allergens. Dust mites are tiny creatures that live in dust and can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to them. A pillow cover will create a barrier between your pillow and the dust mites, preventing them from coming into contact with your skin and causing an allergic reaction.

Why Hypoallergenic Pillow Protectors Are Important

For a moment, think about how much time we spend in our bed with our head resting against our pillow. Its a long time right?

Approximately 1/3 of our life is spent sleeping and during this time were constantly breathing against our pillow. Most of us never consider the cleanliness of our pillow or what lives inside it.

In fact, I used the same pillow for 20 years growing up. I washed it every few years but never thought if the pillow could be impacting my health.

It definitely was impacting my health, but I never knew it!

We spend a lot of money on our face. Make-up, anti-wrinkle creams, lotions, chapstick, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray are all ways we take care of our face.

How often do we clean and change our pillow? Rarely.

Scientist found that a 2-year-old pillow can be made up of 10-15% dust mites and their feces. Thats a lot of weight for an insect we cant even see.

They hide in our pillows, eating our dead skin and dandruff that we shed . They also love moisture, so if you drool or sweat while sleeping they will congregate where there is moisture.

Why should we be wary of dust mites in our pillows? For one, dust mites are a growing allergic problem in the U.S. and across the world.

They have a protein found in their body and feces that can cause humans all type of problems including:

  • Frequent washing with high heat or essential oils

The Types Of Pillow Covers For Dust Mites

There are many types of pillow covers for dust mites. Some are made of cotton, some are made of polyester, and some are made of a blend of both materials. The type of cover you choose should be based on your own personal preferences. Some people prefer a softer material, while others prefer a more durable one.

Sizes Of Hypoallergenic Pillow Covers

AllerZip Allergy, Dust Mite & Bed Bug Proof Pillow Covers by Protect-A-Bed

Most dust mite covers offer a similar size selection. These include Standard, Queen, and King pillow covers.

Mission Allergy is the leader in allergy bedding and has the most options. If you go to allergy specialists throughout the U.S. they will recommend two companies for your bed Mission Allergy and Allersoft.

The Most Waterproof Mattress Protector

If perspiration or accidents are your primary concern behind dust mites, the UltraBlock mattress protector is the way to go. It’s the only option on this list that’s been tested against 100 gallons of water and still remained dry, so many of the reviewers trust it to stand up to kids, pets, and other messes. Despite its waterproof material, it’s still soft, nontoxic, odor-free, and carefully fitted and, of course, it helps to eliminate dust mites and other common allergens. It’s free of PVC, phthalates, and vinyl, and as a few customers raved, it’s “completely silent.”

  • Material: Polyester outside, polyurethane layer inside
  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, California King

One reviewer wrote: “Well it definitely works so far, my little one had a few accidents the first week I tried this and it worked great! Didnt get any pee on the mattress, washed great and all. Its very soft and doesnt move the sheets around or anything like that. I dont even notice its there. Definitely recommend!”

Types Of Allergy Pillow Protectors

Waterproof

Waterproof dust mite pillow covers are an option for you and your family. They are relatively inexpensive and will protect you from dust mite, dog/cat, feather, and pollen allergy.

They will also protect the pillow from sweat and dirt, and keep the pillow looking new.

Although we list waterproof allergy covers in this review, I strongly suggest NOT purchasing a waterproof pillow cover. Waterproof covers will make more noise while sleeping and will cause overheating/sweating because they arent breathable.

If you see a product claim waterproof and breathable it is likely untrue. They cant be both.

Breathable

Breathable dust mite pillow covers are made from 100% cotton or microfiber. They are effective against dust mites and other allergens because the fabric is weaved extra tight/fine.

The cotton and microfiber products we mention in this review have incredibly fine fabric up to 2 microns small.

Generally, a fabric with less than 10 microns will be effective against dust mites and their feces. Fabrics with pore space less than 6 microns will also be effective to keep out cat dander.

Breathable pillow covers will make less noise than their plastic waterproof competitors. Breathable covers are considered water resistant because they will keep water out for a short time before it soaks into the fabric.

I mention the best cotton and microfiber pillow protectors below.

Q: Do Hypoallergenic Pillow And Mattress Covers Actually Help Allergies

Organic Dust Mite Zip On Pillow Barrier Cover

A: Yes. Hypoallergenic pillow and mattress covers serve as a physical barrier if youre allergic to dust mites. Evidence shows the covers provide a measurable, significant decrease in dust mite allergen on pillows and mattresses.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

However, the hypoallergenic covers alone will probably not make much of a difference unless you take other steps to reduce your exposure to dust mite and related allergens. Covering pillows and mattresses is not effective unless you also do the following:

  • Regularly wash bed linens in hot water and dry in hot heat to remove dust mite allergens.
  • Take steps to reduce dust mites in carpeting, upholstery, drapes and other furniture.
  • Wash stuffed animals in hot water and dry in hot heat weekly.
  • Vacuum your bedroom regularly with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter.
  • Take measures to reduce exposure to other things youre allergic to.

Other Ways To Reduce Bedtime Allergies

Speaking of cleaning, Dr. Gupta stresses the importance of maintaining a dust-free environment when tackling bedtime allergies. “Vacuum with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner and dust frequently with a damp cloth and a dry cloth,” she begins. “Minimize rugs and carpeting when possible, and keep them clean if you have them. Wash your sheets in hot water at least once a weeknot cold or warmand reduce clutter, which can cause the accumulation of dust.” What’s more, Dr. Gupta suggests keeping the humidity of your room around 50% to ward off allergens. “Dust mites live off of the humidity in the air,” she explains. “So more humidity means more dust mites.”

Quick Facts On Dust Mites

Allergen and Dustmite Proof Covers for Pillows Allergy Best Buys

Dust mites are microscopic bugs that thrive on household dust. They are generally present on various surfaces such as upholstered furniture, pillows, mattresses, and stuffed toys.

The mites feed on miniature human skin flakes that we shed daily. Once shed, these flakes accumulate in furniture, carpets, mattresses, bedding, pillows, and stuffed toys. These areas contain large populations of dust mites. Furthermore, having pets around such as cats and dogs release dander which also serves as food for the mites.

A mite only grows to one-quarter to one-third of a millimeter which makes them invisible to the naked eye. When using a microscope, youll see an 8-legged white bug categorized as an arachnid along with spiders, chiggers, and ticks. They prefer environments with temperatures between 68-77 degrees F with a humidity level of 70-90%.
