How Firm Is The Purple

2020 Purple Mattress Review – How much do you weigh? It matters!

We ranked the Purple around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so this suggests the Purple is right around medium-firm.

That said, note that a sleepers perception of a beds firmness will vary a bit depending on their weight. In this case, heavier-weight sleepers might find that the original Purple feels softer, while light- and medium-weight folks might find it to be on the firmer side.

My Purple 4 Mattress Findings

This is a mattress that you really sink into. In fact, it is the plushest among the entire Purple mattress line. Below is a photo showing how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

This is a very bouncy mattress as well but not in a bad way. You get lots of quick recovery with the smart grid system and true bounce with the springs underneath but despite the bounciness, motion transfer is contained very well.

Heres a video to illustrate this point.

Purple is one of the coolest sleeping mattresses on the market. If sleeping hot is your primary concern, you owe it to yourself to try the Purple. You dont lose any of this benefit with more of the smart grid. Below is a video illustrating heat retention on the Purple 4. It was taken with my infrared camera. I dont think this video quite does the mattress justice as heat is constantly dissipating through the grid keeping you cool.

Take a peek inside. Heres an up-close shot of the inside of the Purple. Notice how the comfort grid system bounces back instantly. Its almost like a jello type of responsiveness.

Heres a peek inside the purple. I pulled back the foam border so you can see the spring system inside.

Overview Of The Purple 4 Bed

This mattress along with the Purple 2 and 3 are more of an evolution of the Original Purple. What sets these models apart is that they include a pocket coil system instead of foam. Despite having springs they still contain motion incredibly well.

Heres a video overview with me on the Purple 4. The cover of this mattress stretches to work with the mattress. I also highly recommend the Purple Sheets and Purple Mattress Protector because they are also stretchy and breathable. They also have a heavier duty elastic band to keep the bedding from slipping off the mattress.

Does The Purple Mattress Have More Edge Support Than Other Memory Foam Beds

Purple Plus vs Original Purple Review (Which Mattress Is Better?)

When Purple mattresses first came out, there wasnt much in the way of edge support according to some disgruntled customers.

The company received plenty of complaints about the sagging edges that did not offer support for sitting.

Purple mattresses have undergone some updating to add more edge support based on the feedback the company got. The reviews for this feature are better now.

Comparing Purple Mattress Alternatives

  • Comparing Purple 4 vs. Casper

When we compared this Purple model with the Casper mattress for pricing, Casper was the clear winner. Thats not too surprising considering the Casper is an all-foam mattress, while the Purple 4 is a hybrid mattress that combines a pocketed innerspring coils topped with the patented Purple Hyper-Elastic Polymer. That construction also makes the Purple 4 best for back and stomach sleepers, as well as heavy individuals, while the Casper is going to excel with all sleeper types. Overall they are very different mattresses and suitable for different types of sleepers.

  • Comparing Purple 4 vs. Original Purple

The first thing to note is the Original Purple is considerably less expensive in comparison with the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress price. Thats because the Purple 4 uses pocketed coils for its support system, while the original Purple uses a cheaper foam support system. In terms of firmness they are similar, but Purple Hybrid Premier is a hair firmer. We think both mattresses can work for any type of sleeper position, but Purple Hybrid is more accommodating for heavier sleeper types. As Purple likes to say about their mattresses soft where you want it and firm where you need it.

What You Get With Purple

Purple began its mattress sales in 2016, but the cushioning formula used in making its top layer is several decades old. Sold directly to consumers and exclusively online, Purple is constructed with 15 cushioning technology patents.

The base layer is 4 of supportive foam, the middle layer is 3.5 of comfort foam, and the top layer is 2 of patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is a stretchy polymer grid.

These key characteristics contribute to the popularity of Purple:

  • Temperature: The open grid construction of the top layer makes Purple much cooler than most foam mattresses.
  • Motion transfer: While its bouncier than most foam mattresses, motion transfer is minimal.
  • Comfort: This mattress is effective at minimizing pressure points.
  • Hypoallergenic: The 100% food-grade materials used to make Purple are hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant.

In contrast, these are some potential weaknesses to note about Purple:

  • Size: Because Purple is slightly smaller than standard mattresses, it is not ideal for tall people.
  • Weight: The materials used in making the bed are heavy. The Queen size, for example, weighs 110 pounds.
  • Firmness: While average and large-size sleepers find the mattress comfortable, Purple is described as too firm by many small-sized consumers .
  • Edge support: This mattress has poor edge support. Some consumers report bottoming out or falling off the bed while sitting on the edge.

How Does The Purple 4 Mattress Feel

inside the purple hybrid

The 4 layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer on top gives the Purple Hybrid Premier a gel-like feel. Yes, all of the beds from Purple will have the unique gel-like feel. However, because the 4.0 Purple mattress has the thickest slab of polymer out of the four Purple beds, it has the most distinct gel-like feel of all the models. As you lay down on the bed, you can feel the polymer beneath shifting, folding, and conforming to your body.

While creating the Purple 4 mattress review, weve found that Hyper-Elastic Polymer is not for everybody. Some folks find the feeling a little too odd. Theyre used to more traditional innerspring or memory foam beds, so the transition is a little weird. With that said, the majority of people who try it end up liking it. Just ask Slumber Yard team member Matt. He personally selected the Purple 4 to be his mattress because he liked it so much.

Dont worry if youve never tried it before Purple allows you to order samples. That way you dont have to guess, youll know if you like it before you buy.

Who Started Purple Mattress

Purple has some imaginative names particularly brothers Terry as well as Tony Pearce, who are experts in manufacturing and materials and material experts, respectively. They utilized both of their expertise to develop sophisticated versions of products they believed required more attention in terms of design and comfort.

The result was the creation of Floam, a high-tech cushioning fluid that can be found in many items from footwear to medical instruments. The problem in using Floam has been that the product was only available for institutional bodies as the cost of developing the technology was costly.

So the two brothers set out to create a cheaper Floam and later developed their own Hyper-elastic Polymer. Soft, stretchy, and long-lasting, the Hyper-elastic polymer soon became the foundational component of what makes the Purple mattress supple and supportive in the same way.

  • You sleep on your side, back or stomach. It works for all sleeping positions, unless you weigh under 145 pounds and strictly sleep on your side.

Purple Hybrid Mattress Review

After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015, Purple launched its flagship mattress featuring the Purple Grid comfort layer. This unique, proprietary material is made from hyperelastic polymers molded into an open-grid pattern. The Purple Grid conforms to the body like memory foam but does not trap as much heat and sleeps exceptionally cool.

Three years later, Purple introduced three hybrid mattresses. These models all feature the Purple Grid comfort layer, along with a pocketed coil support core. The standard Purple Hybrid measures 11 inches thick with a 2-inch Purple Grid and a medium firm feel. The Purple Hybrid Premier is available in either a 12-inch profile with a 3-inch Purple Grid and a medium firm feel, or a 13-inch profile with a 4-inch Purple Grid and a medium feel. The American-made Purple mattress is available in Twin XL, Queen, King, and California King, and is comprised of 3 layers that give sleepers core strength, pressure relief, cooling, and bounce. The layers all breathable so they will not absorb excess heat are:

    Back Sleepers

Those who sleep exclusively on their backs should find adequate support on the Purple. The beds medium-firm feel gently contours to the bodys curves, which encourages healthy spinal alignment. Sleepers of average-weight and lightweight sizes should feel supported, but heavier folks may sink in a bit too far into the transitional layer, particularly those who weigh more than 300 lbs.

    Side Sleepers

The Purple mattresss gel grid collapses at areas like the hips and shoulders, delivering the spinal alignment that side sleepers need for comfortable sleep. While the Purple is a good mattress for spinal alignment for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers, some people may still prefer a softer feel, especially since we saw some pressure issues in the hips and shoulders.

Heavyweight side sleepers would do better with a thicker comfort system than that found in the original Purple. These folks may want to consider the Purple Hybrid Premier or one of the beds that won a spot in our best mattresses for side sleepers list.

    Purple’s Unique Firmness And Feel

    Purple Hybrid Mattress Review

Purple is unlike any other mattress we have reviewed so far. Running your hand over the mattress you can feel the odd, grid-like structure. However, when we crawled into the bed we didnt feel it at all. That being said we have read reviews that the grid was felt by some users. You may find that you need a slightly longer break-in time to adjust to the bed.

Our perception of firmness varied a bit and this may be due to the unique way the purple grid collapses and bends to your bodys weight. Overall though, we felt Purple was a medium firmness, meaning it could be a great choice for a variety of sleep positions.

Its important to remember that with all mattresses, firmness can vary quite a bit from one user to the next. Your height and weight greatly affect how you perceive firmness. The lighter you are the firmer the mattress will feel. You will rest more on top of the mattress, rather than sinking in. As weight increases, your body will sink into the mattress more and you may perceive a mattress as softer.
