The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 excelled in our evaluation particularly for side sleepers, with excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment in that position for almost all individuals, with the possible exception of those who are much heavier than average . Finding a mattress that works well for side sleepers is possibly the trickiest you need a model that allows your hips and shoulders to sink deeply into the comfort layer of the mattress without hitting the firmer support layers below, and without compressing the mattress so much that your waist/sides are unsupported. We found the Purple Hybrid Premier to be a real standout in this respect.

In our evaluations, we found the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 mattress to have a Medium softness level are correspondingly firmer). The honeycomb design means that the top gel layer buckles rather than simply compressing, so the heavier parts of the body are nicely cradled while lighter/concave parts, like the lumbar area, remain supported by the un-collapsed honeycomb gel. So, what is it that makes the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 so great? It starts with its construction. All Purple mattresses are made from a hyper-elastic gel grid thats designed to flex and compress under pressure points, while still providing adequate support for the rest of your body. The difference between the mattresses comes down to how much of that grid is built into the mattress.

The feel was significantly different than any other mattress I had tried prior, but not necessarily in a good way. I could feel the grid lines through the mattress cover when I laid down on top of the bed, and the whole thing felt like it compressed under me, rather than giving me any sort of relief. For reference, Im about 150 pounds, depending on the dayan average weight for a woman of my height.

How Firm Are The Purple Hybrid Mattresses

Next up, lets get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below, Ill go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For reference, Im 59, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.

As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so Ill section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.

Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, its clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. Id especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica. It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.

The Nectar mattress is an all-foam bed with a deeply hugging memory foam mattress feel. Even though the Nectar is slightly softer than the Purple, we recommend the Purple over the Nectar for lightweight people. Lighter people are likely to find that the Nectars surface doesnt sink in as easily as the Purple Comfort Grid, which makes the Purple more comfortable for lightweight folks.

The Nectars memory foam construction is slightly more supportive than the Purples gel grid and foam combination. We find the Nectar to better support stomach sleepers, although we recommend both beds to people who weigh less than 230 lbs. One of the unique aspects of the Purple Grid is that it may actually feel firmer or softer depending on how you sleep. Generally speaking, we find that its more supportive when you lay down on your back or stomach, but feels a little softer when youre side sleeping.

Back sleepers should find that the Purple Hybrid Premier offers a great balance of comfort and support. When we tested it, we found that our hips melted into the Grid but everything else felt perfectly well-supported.

We were equally pleased with how the Purple Hybrid Premier worked for side sleeping the lighter you are, the firmer the mattress is likely to feel, but for us, the experience was once-again very cushioning yet still supportive. For average- or heavyweight people, it should be a great mattress for neck and shoulder pain.

Likewise, for stomach sleeping, we found the mattress gave us all the support we required our hips did not bow into the mattress and take us out of alignment. In fact, we recommend the Purple Hybrid Premier as one of the best mattresses for hip pain.
