Mattress Construction And Mattress Thickness

Zinus Ultima Comfort Memory Foam 6 Inch Mattress Unboxing (Part 2)

The thickness of each of the layers inside a mattress determines its depth. The majority of mattresses have two layers, however high-quality mattresses might have three, four, or even more layers. Different materials are used in each layer.

The cushioning, stability, and longevity of your mattress are all affected by these materials. The comfort layer and the base layer are the two essential layers found in all mattresses.

So, what is the number of layers in a memory foam mattress? It depends on the brand and manufacturer, but there are usually two layers: a comfort layer and a base layer.

  • Base Layer: Everything is supported by this lowest layer. To avoid sagging, it is made of durable materials.
  • Comfort Layer: This top layer molds to your bodys shape and relieves pressure. Its made of supple memory foam.

A transitional layer between the comfort and base layers is sometimes included in these mattresses. This center section functions as a buffer and prevents sagging.

What thickness memory foam mattress topper is best for you depends on how firm and supportive you want your mattress to be, but one thing is certain: youll need more base layer than comfort layer.

How To Assess Mattress Thickness

First things first, you need to understand the structure of the mattress thats making it, well, thick. A mattress is comprised of two to five layers.

You have the foundational layers, which include the base and mattress technology. The foundational layers in a high quality mattress should comprise about half of the overall mattress thickness. If the mattress has a foundation layer of less than 5 of the 10 inches, it probably wont last very long because of insufficient foundational support.

Your comfort layers often consist of a dedicated comfort layer, and support layer. These layers provide additional support for your body, usually contouring foams of different shapes and densities. These pressure relieving layers are what makes a mattress feel plush. Look for a mattress with comfort layers that are at least 2 inches thick. More than that will be up to your support and comfort preferences, which we will discuss further on.

Inch Vs 9 Inch All Latex Mattress

Hi Phoenix, I am a newbie researching for a new mattress. You have a ton of great information on this site. Thanks for that. I had thought of getting a memory foam but am now thinking about latex. I am wondering if a 7 inch latex mattress is sufficient or if the extra 3 inches of latex for a 10 inch mattress makes a big difference. Specifically , long term , I weigh about 165 and my wife weighs around 125, do you think 6 inch might feel like bottoming out. I am trying to determine from a cost vs usage perspective if the extra 700-800 dollars are worth for the extra 3 inches. If someone has experience with 6 inch mattress and its feel long term , their perspective on this would also be welcome.

Sleeping Alone Or Sharing Bed With A Partner

Thick Futon Mattress : Full

Thicker mattresses with their many layers and a tall base layer can be more supportive than a thin mattress. If you are sharing your bed with a partner, there is more pressure on your mattress than when you are sleeping alone. More pressure on a thinner mattress can make it sag. You need a mattress thats at least 10 to 12-inches thick.

What Are The Benefits Of A Thinner Mattress

Just like thicker mattresses, there are several reasons why a thinner mattress could be more suited to your specific sleep needs.

Reviews from many people with limited mobility say they find that a thinner mattress is easier to get into and out of regularly. If you are short in stature, a thin mattress may also be beneficial.

Additionally, easily being able to sit on a bed instead of having to exert effort makes a world of difference for sleepers with injuries or other conditions which make movement more difficult.

The weight of a thinner mattress is also lesser and it is easier to move. If you plan to move a beds position frequently or dont have someone to help you, a thinner one may be a good choice. For example, you may have a Murphy bed, which is a regular bed that can fold up to the wall. Lori Wall beds are well-known for this, and they recommend mattresses with a maximum thickness of 12 to ensure the bed can properly close. Also, remember that the lighter the mattress is, the easier it would be to pull up.

As mentioned above, thinner mattresses often cost less. When planning to buy, if you are on a strict budget or simply cant afford a big purchase right now, a thinner mattress could also be the right choice for you.

If you’re looking to add a little depth to your thin mattress, you might want to consider a mattress topper.

A one- to four-inch mattress topper can beef up any thin mattress, and is a cost-effective way of adding additional comfort to any bed.

For example, if your bed sits too low to the ground, a topper will help you raise the profile, making it simpler to get in and out of it.

A solid topper allows you to easily add four or more inches to your mattress, and are usually firm enough to hold their height as you’re getting into and out of your bed.

Mattress toppers are also an excellent way of reviving a tired, old mattress that’s lost its shape and comfort. Simply by laying a plush, nice mattress topper over your uncomfortable and rigid mattress, you can easily get several more years of comfort from your bed.

Plus, toppers come rolled up in a package, so they’re easy to have delivered right to your home.

Can You Flip A Memory Foam Mattress

Thick Futon Mattress : Full

Most memory foam beds are created as a single structural unit. They should not be flipped since this could damage the foam layers. But, memory foam beds may need to be rotated every six months to even out wear and tear.

The exception to this rule is if the memory foam mattress is specifically designed to be flipped. Some mattress models have dual firmness levels, meaning one side is softer, and the other side is firmer. The customer can flip the mattress to whichever side they find most comfortable.

Height Of Your Foundation

Youll want to combine the depth of your mattress and the height of your mattress foundation to ensure your bed will still be accessible. When your bed is too high, its harder to climb in and out of bed each night.

We suggest keeping your mattress at least 25 inches from the ground. This will allow you to access your bed easily throughout the night. Keeping your mattress elevated also minimizes its exposure to dust and other allergens, though you may still want to look into a mattress protector if you want to avoid triggering allergy symptoms.

Many sleepers wont bother pairing a mattress topper with a new mattress, as ideally the surface shouldnt need any extra help to feel comfortable. However, if you plan on pairing something like a cooling mattress topper with your new mattress, you will also need to account for the toppers thickness when it comes to your beds total height.

People with certain medical conditions might find plusher or firmer mattresses are better choices to meet their sleep needs. For instance, those who suffer from back pain might prefer firmer mattresses with fewer layers, while those who have some of the following conditions might prefer thicker mattresses with more comfort layers that boost both the softness and the height of the mattress.

Which Is Better 6

There is no definitive answer as to which is better, 6-inch or 8-inch mattress. Ultimately, it depends on what you are looking for in a mattress and your own personal preferences. Some people find that an 8-inch mattress is too thick and feels too firm, while others find that a 6-inch mattress is too thin and not comfortable enough. It is important to try out different mattresses before making a purchase to see what feels best to you.

How Thick Should A Mattress Be For Different Sleeping Positions

Thick Futon Mattress : Full

There are different thickness levels recommended for different sleep positions.

Back sleepers typically require a firm six- to eight-inch mattress. If you’re a back sleeper, you’ll require support for your shoulders and buttocks. You’ll also require a little “give” that will allow the small of your back to receive support, and sink into the mattress. This helps to keep your spine in proper alignment.

If you tend to sleep on your side, you’ll require support for your shoulders and hips. You should find an eight- to 10-inch thick mattress ideal. You may wish to choose an eight- or 10-inch foam slab with a solid foam core, and a softer outside foam.

  • Stomach Sleepers
  • You’ll require more comfort and less support if you’re a stomach sleeper. You’ll want to choose a minimum of 10 inches thickness, and up to 15 inches is ideal. Memory foam mattresses are good for stomach sleepers, particularly thick ones. If you’re a heavy front sleeper, you’ll probably be better with a solid core: a strong innerspring, or high-density foam, ideally.

  • Pregnant People
  • For women in mid- to late-term pregnancy, a soft top of four to six inches of soft memory foam that sits on top of a four- to six-inch medium hard latex foam base is ideal. It provides outstanding comfort and support, especially if you sleep on your stomach.
