After two years of cancellations and weather-dependent outdoor performances, the Jacobs Pillow dance festival is making its return to the theater.

Jacobs Pillow, the dance center in Becket, Mass., announced on Wednesday the schedule for its 2022 festival, which includes a premiere by the choreographer Ronald K. Brown, as well as performances by the New York City Ballet principal dancers Sara Mearns and Taylor Stanley, Kyle Abrahams group A.I.M and the tap dancer Dormeshia, among others.

The season celebrates the 90th anniversary of the first performances at Jacobs Pillow, and features the unveiling of the newly renovated Ted Shawn Theater. The theater boasts a larger stage, greater accessibility, and new air cooling and ventilation systems.

It will be a sheer joy to gather together again in that magical theater, Pamela Tatge, the centers executive and artistic director, said in a news release.

This year, performances will also be held on the Pillows outdoor stage and in a tent set up on the site of the Doris Duke Theater.

The company will use its time in Becket to begin development of Nn Ghero, a full-length work of dance theater responding to the 1978-79 massacre of 10,000 refugees from Bangladesh on Marichjhapi Island in West Bengal, India, and adjacent stories of genocide and eco-displaced communities. It will premiere in St. Paul, Minnesota in September.

Two collaborators joining the ADT dancers are composer, vocalist, and cellist Spirit McIntyre and writer and author Mimi Mondal.

McIntyre , from New Orleans, created the sound score for ADTs 2021 production Dastak: I Wish You Me and is performing the work on the companys U.S. tours during 2022. They use their voice and cello to blend Blues, Soul, Folk, Classical, Reggae, and Middle Eastern sounds into unique musical landscapes. Ronald K. Brown / EVIDENCE has deeply moved audiences for over 30 years. No major choreographer has worked harder to bring spiritual awareness to the human heart than Ronald K. Brown, writes the Washington Post. His dances concern our struggle to find love and connection, where compassion alone can ease the grueling physical journey of life.

In 2020, Jacobs Pillow honored Ronald K. Brown with the Jacobs Pillow Dance Award. For Festival 2022, EVIDENCE will perform a series of works including Gatekeepers, Upside Down, and the world premiere of The Equality of Night and Day, featuring an original score played live by composer and jazz pianist, MacArthur Fellow Jason Moran. With text by civil rights activist Angela Davis and visuals by Deborah Willis, the sweeping and poetic work examines the concepts of balance and equity, in our history as well as in the current political climate as it affects young people, women, and people of color today.

Summer 2022 Guide: Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival Celebrates Its 90th Season

mignolo dance summer intensive, Mignolo Arts Center, Milltown, 14 July ...

Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival turns 90 this summer.

What is the secret to the success of this beloved institution in the Berkshires?

This is partly due to its respect for the rich history of dance and the Pillows special sense of place. Anyone who has been there knows there is something magical about this rural hilltop location surrounded by hundreds of acres of wilderness.

Pamela Tatge, executive and artistic director of Jacobs Pillow, agreed during a recent interview about the upcoming season, which begins June 22 and ends August 28.

Its just the magic of the place, Tatge said. Its a place people call a haven, a sanctuary, a dance paradise. And I think thats what people feel when they come to the pillow and what theyve felt for decades. And they have passed on this passion and love for the pillow from generation to generation. And we are the beneficiaries of that loyalty and dedication to what its like to see dance at Jacobs Pillow. It is unlike any other dance venue in the world.

You can feel that sense of history in the historic Ted Shawn Theater at the Pillow, where some of the worlds greatest dancers have performed on the same stage for nine decades.

But a big part of Pillows success also involves her ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of dance. The festival is not frozen in the past. Instead, it regularly presents new work from new dance companies around the world.

Jacobs Pillow season kicks off with a 90th anniversary gala on June 18.

In the press

Throughout the evening I was struck by the seemingly ceaseless rise of energy, wondering how it could be maintained. But even in the moments of pause or stillness, the dancers continued to emit radiant strength their commitment to the dance, to the art, to Brown, to each other, to us, is formidable, precious. Breathtaking and life-sustaining and hopeful. Read more from Janine Parker in the Boston Globe.

Browns choreography responds mainly with a ritual of prayer and grief: the dancers circling around a testifying soloist or retreating into a corner, hands raised, or removing the top halves of their costumes and placing them like offerings or bodies in a pile.
