Top 10 Ways To Care For Your Down Or Feather Pillow:

Your pillows may not last forever but lasting decades is not out of the question.

  • Folding them, putting them in a headlock, and using them for pillow fights will impact the longevity of your pillows. You don’t have to baby them but if you can avoid abusing them your pillow will reward you with years of consistent support.
  • Feather pillows should not be washed. Feathers are designed by nature to help keep water off a bird’s back, so please don’t wash your feather pillows. Use a pillow protector or pillow case and wash that and send the actual pillow to a professional dry cleaner that has experience with cleaning down bedding.
  • Down pillows can be washed, but you must make sure they are dried properly. Any moisture remaining on any of the down clusters will mold and mildew in less than 24 hours and your pillow will be ruined. So when you think it’s done drying, dry it some more. Think in terms of hours, like 4 hours on medium heat, and not in terms of 36 – 48 minutes which would be a dryers normal cycle time. No, you don’t need tennis balls.
  • If you bathe or shower at night before you go to bed make sure your hair is dry.
  • If you bathe or shower at night put on the moisturizing creams in the morning.
  • Buy a pillow protector.
  • Use a pillow case and wash it every weekend or whenever you strip the bed and wash the sheets.
  • If you live in a humid climate DON’T hang it out outside on a clothes line to “air it out”.
  • If you can smell it you already need a new pillow.

What Is The Best Down Fill Power

    Image Information

The rule of thumb is “the higher the fill power the higher the quality,” so our ultra-premium 850 fill power is the finest and most consistent down fill available in the world. HOWEVER,

  • Where is the down fill from? A region or is it a specie specific bird? … is it ? If it doesn’t say Hungarian then it isn’t . Not everyone carries Hungarian white goose down because it’s very expensive.
  • How is it cleaned? How many times or steps in the cleaning process? One time? Four times?
  • Where is it cleaned? At the point of origin or is it shipped to China for cleaning? We clean ours in the US.
  • What percentage of the down is actually down cluster ?
  • All of these elements and many more impact the quality of given a fill power from a given bird from a given region.

The higher the fill power the larger the down cluster, the larger the down cluster the higher the quality, the higher the quality the longer it will last and the higher it will loft and the more air it will trap therefore sleeping warmer.

Can You Wash A Down Pillow

Follow the specific care instructions of the manufacturer for the best results. Generally, it’s okay to wash a down pillow on the delicate setting with mild detergent. The best “natural” way to clean your down pillow is to leave it outside under the sun on a dry day, which will dry out dust and dirt. You can also dry it on your dryer’s low setting with a few clean tennis or dryer balls to fluff the pillow back up. Dry cleaning is also an option, but keep in mind it breaks down the natural oils in down and reduces your pillow’s lifespan.

    Why You Should Trust Us

To find out what makes an excellent comforter, we spoke with down expert Jack Sukalac on two different occasions when writing and updating this guide. Sukalac is an engineer who started repairing down comforters more than 40 years ago. And he turned it into a business, All About Down, making and repairing down comforters in his Seattle basement. We also consulted David Sweet, then-president of the American Down and Feather Council Gary Peterson, a longtime manager at famed outdoor-gear maker Western Mountaineering Daniel Uretsky, president of down and down-alternative supplier Allied Feather + Down and Shannon Maher, interim dean at the Fashion Institute of Technology and former product designer for The Company Store.

Wirecutter senior staff writer Jackie Reeve, who worked on the latest update of this guide, has written almost all of our bedding guides, including those for sheets, blankets, and pillows. She built on the excellent work of Alex Arpaia, who wrote about comforters from 2017 to 2019, when she was a staff writer at Wirecutter.

Vs 750 Vs 850 Fill Power And What’s The Difference

how to make a pillow with an invisible zipper

In addition to the larger down cluster being of higher quality it also came from a older bird. The smaller down clusters come from smaller, less mature birds. It’s all about supply and demand. 850 fill power down clusters are more expensive because there are fewer of them and most everyone wants only the finest quality. But keeping the bird alive long enough, many years, to produce such high quality is expensive, time consuming, and labor intensive.

Look for companies that specifically mention their treatment of the birds if you are concerned about how they acquire their down. All of our Hungarian white goose down is RDS certified under the responsible down standard.

    • Unique chamber design for a supportive and plushy feel

If the idea of pure down seems too soft or plushy for you, I’d highly recommend looking into a down blend or hybrid down pillow like this option from Coyuchi. Its inner chamber is filled with a mix of feathers and down to offer a mid-to-firm level of support and structure, while the outer compartments are filled with pure down. This will give you a soft and fluffy feel without you completely sinking into your pillow.

Q: Why Hungarian White Goose Down

Hungarian white goose down is legendary around the world for the size and consistency of the down clusters. However, not all Hungarian white goose down is created equal so we have ours isotope tested by an independent lab to make sure ours isn’t from China and wasn’t washed and cleaned in China! Many offer Hungarian white but is it really Hungarian? We know ours is. I wonder if they know.

    What Were Looking For:

Fill power: Pillows filled with other materials like memory foam, poly fiber, and latex have generalized measurements to determine their loft. For down pillows, the fill power correlates to the loft of the pillow, and you can use the fill power to judge the quality of the pillow. Manufacturers come up with the fill-power number by measuring the cubic inches of loft that one ounce of down fill produces. Basically, the higher the fill power number, the loftier and more insulated the pillow will be with a higher price tag to match. The standard fill power is around 500 to 600, which is a respectable plush pillow. Above that fill power, you are entering the deluxe pillow space.

Fill composition: Youll notice that a few of the pillows below contain a blend of duck or goose feathers and down material, while some are filled with only down material. What your down pillow is actually filled with will affect the price as well as the overall feel and support of the pillow. Pillows that are 100 percent down cost more and feel superbly lush and soft. When feathers are mixed in, the pillow price and plushness can vary, making them a good choice for those who want a more affordable or more supportive option.

Down Duvet Versus Down Alternative Duvet

A down duvet is made from the undercoating or under feathers of duck or geese and is known for warmth despite its light weight, according to Anupama Pasricha, a professor of fashion design and merchandising at St. Catherine University in Minnesota. Down duvets are especially breathable compared to down alternative duvets, too.

There are ethical concerns when it comes to the production of down, including the plucking and pulling of the birds feathers and the conditions the animals are kept in, Pasricha informed us. If you want to make sure the down duvet you buy is ethically sourced, Pasricha recommended looking for a responsible down certification, or Responsible Down Standard , a set of guidelines created by the nonprofit Textile Exchange, that ensure the animals that were not subjected to unnecessary harm, according to the organization.

A down alternative duvet uses fiberfill, typically polyester or other synthetic stuffings, to provide insulation. Because the fill is made from a synthetic material, it can be a good alternative for anyone with allergies or those specifically allergic to down. These fibers are made in different sizes and shapes to mimic down feathers, explained Kiersten Muenchinger, an associate professor of product design with a focus on sustainability at the University of Oregon. Down alternative duvets are also machine-washable, which makes them easier to care for than traditional down duvets.

I have had the same pillow for the last 20 years and was searching for something that would serve me well for the next 20 years. Even on day 1 the new pillow was great! Instead of broken down feathers like my old one, this pillow had amazing fluff that lets you sink into it. Now my husband wants one of his own!

Parachute Down Pillow Review: Best Down Pillow | Healthline

Down comes from birds that have been raised for food, not their feathers, so it is a sustainable byproduct. Farms, processing plants, and factories are usually independently audited to ensure humane practices. A certification you can look for is the Responsible Down Standard . It ensures that the Five Freedoms of animal welfare are followed, prohibits live-plucking and force-feeding, and evaluates the entire process from farm to final product.

    What Is A Duvet

Experts told us to think of a duvet as a type of top-layer bedding blanket usually used for maintaining heat and insulation. Your duvets filling from wool and feathers to microfibers and other materials determines whether its a down duvet or a down alternative duvet.

Many duvet shells are made with materials like cotton, bamboo and Tencel , which can give them cooling properties these materials can be moisture-wicking and breathable too, as we covered in our guide to cooling mattresses.

Oftentimes youll see the words duvet and duvet insert used interchangeably. A duvet often refers to both the duvet insert secured into the duvet cover , but a duvet insert is just that, an insert. Though its sufficient just to use a duvet insert, a duvet cover can be a useful addition to help keep your duvet insert clean.

Is Goose Or Duck Down Better

In terms of insulation and durability, goose and duck down perform the same, though duck down products are generally cheaper. The most significant difference is that geese, as larger birds than ducks, have larger down clusters, which result in higher maximum fill power. That means goose down lofts more and takes up more space, but it also compresses to a smaller size. Duck down also generally smells more than goose down. If you want the lightest and fluffiest pillow with the most warmth and you’re willing to pay a little more go for goose down. Otherwise, duck down is a practical option.
