Is The Purple Mattress Worth It

One of the core tenants of testing at Reviewed is actually using the product, so I slept on the Purple mattress for 30 nights.

Ill begrudgingly admit: I was wrong about the Purple Mattress. It blew me away. Id love to write it off as a luxury mattress thats not worth the hype or pricebut I think for many, it will be a good investment.

Im not sure Id go as far as saying that the polymer is as one-of-a-kind as the company would like people to believe. After sleeping on 10 mattresses and counting in the past year I can tell you that it doesnt feel all that differentaside from its tremendous ability to keep cool. The mattress is comfortable, certainly. But if it were placed in a room of other mattresses covered in sheets, Id probably think the Purple mattress was made of firm foam.

What Is The Purple Made Of

As an all-foam mattress, the Purple is built from a central support core of high-density polyfoam. However, its use of a hyperelastic polymer comfort layer sets it outside the pack, as this innovative material is far less common than memory foam, polyfoam, or natural latex comfort layers.

Although made primarily from synthetic materials, the Purple is a low-VOC mattress. It uses only materials CertiPUR-US certified as being free from hazardous or otherwise harmful chemicals.

Cover Material

The Purples stretch-knit cover is a soft and supple blend of polyester, viscose, and spandex. As it is integrated into the bed itself, stains must be spot-cleaned only. On the bottom of the mattress, the cover has a 100% cotton slip guard to prevent it from shifting on its base or frame.

Purple Mattress Pain Relief Performance

How well a mattress alleviates pain depends on whether or not it can relieve pressure, especially at sensitive pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and lower back.

To measure pressure relief, I used a handy pressure mat. I placed the mat on top of the mattress and climbed aboard. The mat created a map of how much pressure my body exerted on the mattress in different positions. The map turns blue to green for low pressure, and yellow to red for high pressure. Youll see those graphics below.

Back Pain I think this is a nice mattress for back pain. The map is all blue at my back in each position, which shows theres low pressure there. However, if you have severe back pain I might opt for a slightly firmer bed, which will help keep your spine in a straight line.

Shoulder Pain I like the Purple for shoulder pain. The grid offers some great pressure relief and should cradle sore shoulders well.

Hip Pain I also like the Purple for hip pain. Again, that grid layer does a great job cradling the body. However, if youre a side sleeper with severe hip pain, Id go for a softer mattress that will give you even more pressure relief.

Even if you’re an avid online shopper, it’s difficult to purchase over the internet when you’re unconfident about a brand’s policies. Especially when it comes to returns.

The Purple ships for free in a cardboard box directly to your front door. All you have to do is open it up, remove the plastic wrap, unroll, and voila — you have yourself a new bed. There will be an off-gassing smell right when you take it out of the box, but I wouldn’t say it’s a deal-breaker since it disappears after a few days.

They offer a 100-night trial, giving you more than three months to figure out if you like the bed or not. You should give yourself at least 30 days, though, to give your body a chance to get used to the feel.

Lightweight back and side sleepers will probably find that the original Purple feels too firm because they wont be heavy enough to collapse the gel grid and enjoy pressure relief. The Purple should provide plenty of support for lightweight stomach sleepers. It is actually the best mattress for lightweight sleepers who prefer something firm.

Purple Mattress Performance For Couples

If you sleep with a partner, theres a few extra features youll want to look for in a new mattress. Youll want to see if it absorbs your partners movements, if its responsive enough for sex, if it sleeps cool, and how strong its edges are.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is the movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. Its important for couples as it shows whether or not youre going to feel your partners every move.

To measure motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from three different heights on one side of the bed and measured the results on the opposite side of the bed with a seismometer.Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement youre likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning to getting out of bed all the way to full on jumping .

These are pretty high motion transfer results, which shows me that youre likely to feel your partner tossing and turning. If youre a light sleeper, I might consider a mattress with better motion isolation.

Sex

The best mattress for sex is one that has a bouncy and responsive feel, which makes moving around easy. The Purple has just that you wont have any issue switching positions on this bed. Id say its a great bed for sex.

Cooling

Since two people produce more body heat than one, its especially important for couples to look for a cooling mattress. I think the Purple sleeps really cool, thanks to its super breathable polymer grid.

When sitting on the edge of the bed, our reviewers notably sank in more than they did when lying on either side, or in the middle. Were not saying its easy to roll right off, because we didnt have that problem, but getting proper edge support is a challenge in a foam mattress bed-in-box, and the Purple does have this issue.

We also found that when the Purple mattress box arrived, it was a very heavy bundle and easily took two people to unpack and unroll. One of our reviewers could barely carry it inside alone, and noticed that the delivery driver used a dolly.

Analysis Of Sleeping Positions And Body Types

The short story here is that you should be just fine in any sleeping position on Purple Hybrid Premier. Its an accommodating bed with a firmness profile that doesnt really alienate anyone:

• Side sleepers. No problem on either Purple 3 or 4.
• Back sleepers. Highly supportive bed that should work for you just fine, but you should know that its not firm. Its in the middle on firmness.
• Stomach sleepers. Same comment as for back sleepers. You should feel plenty supported, but be aware that its not as firm as Awara or some of the models from Saatva.

Purple Hybrid Premier should work for people with lower, moderate, and higher body weights. Remember, it has pocketed coils for support.

Is The Purple Mattress Good For Couples

For couples with suitable sleep position preferences and weights, the Purple mattress offers a relaxing sleep at an affordable price-point.

The Purple has some of the best temperature neutrality on the market, allowing couples to avoid overheating due to their combined body heat. Excellent motion isolation and a lack of squeaks and creaks also play an essential role in ensuring a deep sleep, as rolling over or changing positions in the night is unlikely to disturb your partner.

Furthermore, the Purple is also much more suitable for sex than many of its all-foam competitors, with reasonable ease of movement and impressive responsiveness for its construction.

The beds one downside for couples is its edge support. While most sleepers will find it acceptable, those who want to use the beds full sleep surface and sleep very close to the edge may find that the support in this area is slightly less than it is closer to the center.
