    Seal The Mattress Before Disposal

If you drag the mattress through the home, bed bugs will jump off it and infest the rest of the house. You can prevent this to an extent by sealing the mattress in an encasement.

When you get to the dump, you can take the mattress out of the encasement. Seal the encasement in an airtight box or bag before laundering it at home.

This should prevent at least some of the bugs from spreading.

Disposing Of A Mattress In New York City

There are several ways to dispose of a mattress for free in New York. It is best to dispose of a mattress before it starts to deteriorate or develop bedbugs, and the easiest way to do so is by having the mattress supplier pick it up when they deliver a new one. Otherwise, the New York City Department of Sanitation will collect the mattress for free at the curbside. However, if the mattress is not properly disposed of, you could get a fine of $100.

If youre selling your mattress or simply want to get rid of the mattress, consider donating it to a local charity. Some local nonprofits, such as Goodwill and Freecycle Network, collect gently used mattresses for free. Others take mattress donations for recycling or for resale. Likewise, if you have a mattress thats in good condition, consider posting it online. Facebook marketplaces like Donation Town make it easy to find charities and schedule pickups.

Once youve decided to dispose of the mattress, remember to follow all the rules relating to proper disposal. In New York City, mattresses must be properly sealed before being disposed. Otherwise, youll risk a $100 fine. In addition to that, you should avoid placing the mattress on the street, as it may attract bedbugs. To avoid this fine, you should seal the mattress with plastic bags before discarding it. To obtain large plastic bags, you can find them at home improvement stores, department stores, or moving supply centers.

    What Is Mattress Recycling

How to Clean A Mattress! (Clean My Space)

The process of mattress recycling involves dismantling beds

and reusing the components for other applications. In contrast, mattress refurbishment or renovation involves reupholstering and reselling the bed.

Approximately 85-90 percent of the materials in a mattress can be reused once a bed has been deconstructed, and entrepreneurial minds are constantly developing new ways to recycle old bedding.

    • Metal springs and coils can be melted down and transformed into new items.
    • Mattress foam can be shredded and used in carpet padding, moving pads, and as a fuel source.
    • Cotton and other fibers can be used as filters, insulation, and fuel.
    • It is possible to repurpose fabrics and upholstery.
    • You can chip wood for mulch or burn it for fuel.

    Mattress Disposal And Recycling

As of January 2022, there is a $30 mattress handling fee at King County transfer stations and Cedar Hills landfill on all mattresses, box springs, and futons. This handling fee offsets the cost of mattress recycling and disposal, and serves as another step forward in King Countys commitment to waste reduction and climate neutrality.

Each year, about 375,000 mattresses and box springs, weighing more than 10,000 tons, are disposed of in King County, according to the 2019 waste characterization study. Each piece takes up about one cubic yard of landfill space.

The mattress industry’s estimated that landfills lose money when mattresses are landfilled because municipal solid waste compacts much more than mattresses. A California studyexternal link calculated that the collection and recycling of all of the 4.2 million mattresses and box springs estimated to be thrown out annually in California would create roughly 1,000 jobs, while greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by between 130,000 and 190,000 metric tons .

Mattresses are made up of several recyclable materials, including foam, cotton, wood and steel . Several organizations in Washington State disassemble mattresses, box springs, and futons into their components and recycle them: find a recycling location on our What Do I Do With…? website.

Mattress Recycling Service And Junk Removal

Signs Of A Bed Bug Infestation

Bed bug infestations are incredibly common, and while they can be quite troublesome and inconvenient, theyre entirely treatable. Your home is not doomed forever. Bed bugs are very good hitch-hikers, and can invade your home in luggage, packed goods, etc. If you notice signs of an infestation, call a professional pest control service right away. If left untreated, the number of bugs will multiply quickly, making them even more challenging to get rid of. These insects are cryptic, very good at hiding, and are known to be tough, resistant and hardy. Because of this, many times the best treatment method of a home for bed bugs is fumigation. The fumigant will control the bed bugs, even in the hard to reach places. In an apartment or condo where fumigation may not be feasible, conventional liquid treatment to the room and adjacent rooms may be an option. Because treatment can be so burdensome, early detection and treatment at the first signs of activity is very important. It is very important to consult a professional pest control company when dealing with bed bugs, because these bugs are known for reinfesting. This is not an infestation a homeowner should try to treat on their own.

Home Sanctuary: Tidy People Make Their Beds

If you are thinking about donating a mattress, make sure your old bed is still in good shape. Although it will likely have some normal wear and tear if it has any major defects, non-profit organizations and local charities may not accept it, or they may throw it away themselves.

You should check all clothing for stains, tears, holes, rips, and mold before donating. Be sure that the fabric covers of box springs are firmly attached and that the frame is not bent or broken. The mattress may be better recycled rather than donated if it has any of these problems. We will discuss the best ways to recycle your mattress and give some resources at the end of this article.

A Lot Of What You Sleep On Can Be Recycled

Most mattress and box spring components can be easily disassembled and recycled. The materials they are made of can be used to manufacture a variety of new products.

    End Uses
Box Springs & Steel Inner-Springs Often made from recycled scrap steel to begin with, these can be recycled and made into new steel.
    Mattress Foam
Wood may be chipped and used as animal bedding, mulch, or biomass fuel.

    Throwing Out Your Mattress

In some cases, you may not be able to donate or recycle your mattress. It may be that your mattress isnt fit for donation, or you cant find a recycling center close enough that will take it. For whatever reason, youre unable to donate, give away, recycle, or upcycle your mattress, theres always the option to throw it out.

However, it is often not as simple as just putting the mattress out on the curb. Many states, cities, and towns have specific ordinances and rules about throwing away mattresses, some of which prohibit putting a whole mattress in the trash. In those places, a curbed mattress may not be picked up on garbage day, and may result in a ticket or a fine.

The rules regarding garbage disposal vary, and you can find the rules for your state and city with a quick Google search. If you live in an area where you can, in fact, throw out a mattress with your regular trash, make sure to carefully read any additional rules to avoid fines and/or pickup refusal. In most places, you will be required to wrap your mattress in plastic, and in some places, you will be required to wrap the mattress in a specially made plastic mattress bag. To be safe, cover your mattress in plastic and seal it shut with packing tape.

For those who cant curb their mattress at all, there are a few other options.

How To Figure Out When Its Time For A New Mattress

Before you plan how to get rid of your mattress, you should consider whether you actually need to dispose of it.

Generally, people get rid of mattresses when they purchase a new one. Here are a few signs that it may be time to buy a new mattress:

    • Sagging: If your mattress has begun sagging in the middle, it can no longer provide adequate support. Buying a new one can save you the back pain that may occur when sleeping on an unsupportive mattress.
    • Discoloration: Mattresses typically change color slightly over time due to the oxidation of the outer cover. However, if your mattress is excessively discolored, it may be time for a new one.
    • Allergies: Innerspring mattresses accumulate dust, dirt, skin cells, hair, and other allergens over time. If youve begun experiencing allergies in the mornings, it could be time to replace your mattress with a fresh, allergen-free one.
