How To Dispose Of A Mattress: Free And Paid Options

How To Dispose Of A Mattress – Best Ways To Get Rid Of Your Old Mattress!

These are your options for getting rid of an old mattress, from recycling programs to trash pickup.

So it’s time to say goodbye to your worn out old mattress, but you aren’t sure how to dispose of it. While most of us would rather not add to the nearly 20 million mattresses that pile up in landfills every year, the alternatives may be trickier than they appear.

Recycling or donating mattresses seems like a simple enough endeavor, but the task can actually be quite challenging. Per the New York Times, some charities aren’t allowed to accept mattresses due to concerns over bed bugs or health department regulations, certain recycling programs have become less profitable and therefore less available, and many states don’t have recycling programs at all.

Our Health & Wellness newsletter puts the best products, updates and advice in your inbox.

Plus, since foam fluctuates wildly in its profitability, some of the popular online mattress brands offering 100+ night trial periods don’t always stick to their promise of recycling or donating returned mattresses — a claim that potential customers may view as a good reason for purchasing.

However, you do have options when it’s time to get rid of your old mattress. Depending on the condition of the mattress and where you live, you may be able to donate it, recycle it or even have it picked up. Here’s what we recommend.

How To Donate A Mattress

Only consider donating your mattress if it is in decent shape. If its in really rough shape , then all youll do when you donate your mattress is create more work for the charity or organization you donate it to, who will have to figure out how to dispose of it soon after you leave it with them.

  • Give it away: If selling your mattress doesnt work, try advertising it for free. This wont get you any extra cash, but it could save you the hassle of tearing it apart yourself or paying someone to haul it away. Use the same methods for selling your mattress, only instead of listing a price, list it as free. You could also try a website like Freecycle.org, which connects community members with people who are giving things away in their area.
  • Can You Donate A Mattress

Absolutely! As long as your mattress is in good condition, it can be donated. This means your mattress should be free from stains, rips, or tears, and not be broken in any way. Each local charitable organization that accepts mattress donations will have slightly different standards for what they take, so its best to check with them before you drop it off.

Does It Cost Anything To Recycle A Mattress

Recycling services and junk removal services may charge as little as $20 or over $100 for recycling your mattress, particularly if theyre doing a home pickup. However, some will take the mattress off your hands for free, especially if youre dropping it off at a recycling center that takes mattresses. Before you schedule a mattress pickup to recycle it, its smart to ask what the charges will be.

    Option : Repurpose Your Mattress

    How To Clean Mattress

Another option you probably havent considered is in using the materials that make up your mattress in other products. Just because the materials are no longer needed in the old, worn out mattress, that doesnt mean they arent still good. The mattress materials that have a longer life-span than the mattress itself are the steel inner-springs, box-springs, steel wire, coils, mattress foam, box-spring wood, foundation wood, fabrics, and fibers.

How To Get Rid Of Your Old Mattress

If youve made the decision to invest in a new mattress or are simply turning your guest room into an office, when you have an old mattress to dispose of, you have several good options:

    • Buy a new mattress from a manufacturer or retailer that will manage disposal of the old one.
    • Donate your old mattress to an organization that accepts them.
    • Take it to a mattress recycling organization.
    • Find a new home and new owners for it.
    • Hire someone to pick up your old mattress.
    • Reuse and repurpose it.

Can You Take A Mattress To The Dump

If you have explored these other options, and cannot find anywhere to accept your mattress, you may be wondering how to get rid of your mattress. Avoid dumping or burning your mattress. Obviously, taking your mattress to the dump should be avoided if possible, but if you live in a very rural area or it is very bad shape this may be your only option. This is still a better option than burning it or dumping it somewhere that is not a designated dump or landfill. You should be especially careful about burning or illegally dumping your mattress. Dumping is illegal if you choose to dump your mattress on the side of the road or in someone elses dumpster, you could be fined. Burning a mattress can be extremely dangerous. If you burn a mattress, you are putting your own health and safety at risk. Burning a mattress also releases harmful toxins in the air that cause damage to the environment.

How Does Ikea Dispose Of All These Old Products

Trade and get money for your old mattress!!!

In an article written back in 2016 , the IKEA chief sustainability officer issued a statement stating that IKEA products that no longer have usefulness or who have outlived their lives as a certain piece of furniture can be reincarnated or repurposed into something new and useful!

IKEA takes the environment and its impact seriously on a public scale, and they often request that you bring old furniture to them to prevent it from going into a landfill.

The use of old wood, plastics, metal, and other materials to be repurposed into new products is a big part of how IKEA will use your furniture.

This means that the raw materials of your old goods can be reworked into a brand new kitchenette room or even just as a new bookshelf.

Reuse Or Repurpose Your Old Mattress

A final option for dealing with your old mattress is to break it down and reuse or repurpose it yourself. Once a mattress is disassembled, its various parts can be sold for scrap, recycled, or used in unique and creative ways around your home or office. Some of the most innovative uses are noted below.

    Source:

    • Memory foam mattresses can be cut down and used as comfy sleeping quarters for your pets.
    • Memory foam padding can be used to stuff pillows and chair cushions, or can be cut into small sizes and used as cleaning sponges.
    • The fabric that covers the mattress makes great disposable rugs for your garage, workroom, or utility room.
    • Mattress springs have the most possibilities. Spray paint them and use as Christmas ornaments or in wreaths, turn them into candle or plant holders, use them as bird feeders, or mount them to your walls as sconces. Even famed handyman Bob Vila uses them in creating rustic style and sustainable art.

Three Quick Fixes For Your Old Mattress

Before I got up this morning, I was scanning the list of basic furniture problems we live with day in and day out so I could share a trick with readers. Duh! I wasn’t even out of bed, what could have been more obvious?

Our mattress has lost it’s verve. Buying a new Queen or, even upgrading to a King, is not an option right now. There are a few things you can do to stretch it out a bit longer. First of all, check the frame to make sure nothing has gone askew or come loose like slats or side rails. If the mattress is in fact the culprit, try one of these tricks:

    1. If your mattress isn’t too old, be sure to flip it over at regular intervals and turn it one complete 180 degree rotation to put the top at the bottom and vice versa. As I said, that will only do so much and mainly it will keep a good mattress from developing a body groove.

    2. This is what I always resort to: Have a 1/4 to 1/2 inch piece of plywood cut to slide between the mattress and the box spring. Cut it just a few inches shorter and narrower than your mattress so it doesn’t wiggle out and you wack your shin while making the bed. Also remember that you may want to paint the entire piece with KILZ or another similar primer to seal in the glue fumes from the plywood. Let it air out thoroughly before using it.

These are make-do tricks I’ve used for as long as I can remember. My mom taught me the mattress rotation/flip and the plywood trick.
