How To Dispose Of A Mattress In New York City

How do I get rid of a mattress and box spring?

There are pretty strict rules about what you can do with a mattress in New York City and for good reason. If you think its ok to just put your mattress on the sidewalk and hope for the best, Ive got news for you !

From The Official Website of the City of New York:

To help the Citys fight against bedbugs and to avoid a $100 fine, seal any mattress or box spring in a plastic bag before putting it out with your regular garbage for bulk collection. You can get large plastic bags at department stores, home improvement stores, and moving supply centers.

Thats right friends, bed bugs are EVERYWHERE just waiting for a chance to jump into your homes and ruin your lives. They sound harmless and small but they are mite-y evil if youve ever had a chance to meet them in their millions.

The city doesnt supply the bags but youll find them everywhere because its not an uncommon process.

If your mattress is larger than 4 x 3 feet then you need to schedule an appointment to have it picked up. This goes for all large waste bigger than this size, dont just leave it on the sidewalk

Again from the City of New York:

Appointments cannot be made for City holidays or during times when collection is suspended due to snow operations. You can schedule an appointment up to four weeks in advance. However, next day appointments must be scheduled by midnight the previous day.

Cut And Recycle The Metal Springs

After you clear away the fluff and fabric, youll reveal the interior springs. You can cut this layer into smaller pieces with a bolt or wire cutter to take to your local metal recycling center or scrap yard. Or if youre feeling crafty, you can upcycle the innersprings to make wine racks, pot holders and more.

    Break The Mattress Down Yourself

If you have the time, space, and tools, you can easily break a mattress down yourself. Simply cut around the perimeter of the fabric covering and peel the cloth and foam away from the box springs and wooden frame. You can roll these materials into a compact bundle and put them in your regular trash can. Next, take a saw and cut up the framewhich you can then burn or turn into wood chips. Take the box springs to a recycling center or sell them for scrap.

Given that mattresses can be so difficult to dispose of effectively, you may want to factor durability into your purchasing decisions. Some mattresses come with warranties that range up to 20 years. With proper maintenance, its not impossible for mattresses to last for decades, which can go a long way toward reducing your households overall waste footprint.

Whats The Most Responsible Way To Dispose Of A Used Mattress You No Longer Want Or Need

Because they are one of the bulky waste items that are the most difficult to dispose of in an eco-friendly way, mattresses are often the culprits of illegal dumping, frequently being left on sidewalks, beside dumpsters, and in alleyways.

The problem here is that hauling a mattress to the landfill means paying extra fees for disposal because mattresses are heavy and bulky, so they dont compact well and end up creating air pockets that fill with flammable and toxic gases when they sit in a landfill.

Unfortunately, trying to be more green about mattress disposal by having a mattress recycled isnt much easier. Mattresses and box springs are usually made up mostly of wood, steel, fabric, fiber, and various types of foam. While its possible to recycle over 90% of a mattress, the only mattress material that is easily recyclable is the foam.

Even though an old mattress is difficult to get rid of, that doesnt mean that letting it sit in a dumpsite to rot away is the best way to dispose of an old mattress.

    Recycle The Box Spring

Getting rid of an old mattress and box spring. Apparently ...

Did you know box springs can be recycled? Not all cities have box spring recycling programs, but if you live in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland, youre in luck!

Vancouverites can take their box springs to a mattress recycler. The recycler will inspect your box spring to see if it can be recycled. Then, theyll charge you a recycling fee often $20 to $25 for each box spring. The box spring will then be recycled in their facility by laborers. Materials such as fabric, foam, polyester filling, and wood get separated and sorted. A special recycler will take these materials for recycling. This way, no materials end up in landfills.

Unfortunately, the truth is that not a lot of people know about recycling services like these. Still too many box springs end up in landfills each year across Canada. Worse, people dump box springs on the side of the road, or in alleys. Called illegal dumping, this action costs cities and residents thousands of dollars a year to clean up.

So whether you decide to landfill or recycle the box spring, both options are better than none.

    When Do Bed Bugs Bite

You may hear how they usually come out at night to feed. This is true, but there are more reasons for this. A hungry bug will search for any nearby source of food during both day and night.

As mentioned earlier, bed bugs do not limit how often they eat or how much they can drink in total. Your blood is their main source of nutrients. They can bite you even while you sleep soundly under your sheets.

How To Dispose Of An Old Mattress

A mattress can be a very difficult thing to move even when you have someone helping you, just because it is so big and so very heavy. So many people buy their new mattress online these days that there is a parallel growth for the need for mattress disposal.

This can be a problem and makes it harder to get rid of the old mattress when buying a new one online because theres no one there to take the old one away when the new one is delivered.

So how can you make throwing away an old mattress as easy as it used to be? Without illegally dumping it, I mean. Its probably not as bad as you think.

For the rest of this post, Ill be sharing 7 different methods for getting an old mattress out of your house in ways that are environmentally responsible.

Method 1: Give Away Your Mattress

The best part about this disposal method is being able to use it as an opportunity to visit and catch up with loved ones you havent seen in a while.

Friends and family members are more likely to accept your used mattress because they know you well and trust you. Try texting or emailing loved ones with pictures and a description of the mattress youd like to get rid of and ask if they would like to have it. If none of them need a new mattress, they may know of someone who does.

Method 2: Try Selling Your Mattress

    Check Your Mattress Warranty

Dont discard your mattress without checking if it is within the warranty period. Most manufacturers provide a warranty of 5 to 10 years. So, if it gets damaged within that period, they will replace it.

You also need to check what the warranty covers. For instance, if your warranty doesnt cover mattress removal, you will have to do it yourself.

For those who have additional junk to remove, dumpster rental could be a good choice at $75 to $125 for a dumpster that measures two cubic yards in size. This helps you declutter and get rid of everything at once. However, it takes up a lot of space in your driveway. Unless youve got enough to fill a container, its usually not going to be a cost-effective option. Some homeowners associations prohibit these items from being used.
