Best Bed in a Box Mattress – Our Top 7 Picks!

Weve found the best mattress-in-a-box brands for you and broken down the advantages and disadvantages of each to help you make the best choice.

Whats Inside The Mattress

The Amerisleep AS3 is composed of three layers and a cover:

  • 3 inches of plant based foam – This layer is made from plant-based memory foam materials and offers responsiveness to movement, support for pressure points, and contours aligned with the natural curvature of your spine.
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils – This support layer buoys the body and contours to a sleeper as they stretch out. Every coil is wrapped to improve motion isolation, so partners sharing the mattress wont disturb each other as they shift around the bed.
  • 1 inch of base foam – The bottom base layer provides structure and support for the overall mattress and helps to reduce sagging.

The mattress cover is made of breathable materials that eliminate heat from being trapped inside your mattress to keep you cooler at night.

Warranties Sleep Trials And Return Policies

A warranty warrants, or ensures the product you buy is protected under certain terms and conditions for a predetermined length of time. Mattresses most often come with a 10-year warranty, while some companies offer longer warranties thanks to their more durable materials. The lifespan of your mattress depends on the mattress type, material quality, and how well you maintain it.

Mattress warranties vary in what they cover, but most brands will offer protection for these basic issues:

  • Sagging or indentations. The average depth covered here is about 1 inch, though some companies cover shallower indents, and others will not cover indents until they are 1.5 inches deep.
  • Undone seams in the cover or pillow top.
  • Broken zipper .
  • Bunched-up foam.
  • Burst or broken coils.

Note that all damages covered in a warranty must be the result of a manufacturing defect and not caused by the owner. Thats why some warranties outline the type of foundation you should use the mattress so as not to damage it. For example, foam mattresses are not often used with a box spring like traditional innerspring beds. We also recommend you use a mattress protector to prevent any stains or spills from voiding your warranty.

Sleep trials arent guaranteed with every bed in a box, although they are often paired together. Lesser known brands dont offer sleep trials instead, they extend a customer satisfaction guarantee, allowing the customer to return the bed within 30 days if they dont like it.

In your search for a new mattress, you have come across many described as “hybrid mattresses.” A combination of innerspring mattresses and latex or foam mattresses, the hybrid mattress aims to bring together the best of both worlds.

Out of the many brands of hybrid mattresses on the market, which ones are best? Here, we take a look at the top nine products we found. The best overall is the Layla, and our runner-up is the Nolah range, which includes certified organic mattresses.

Why You Should Trust Us

The Sleep Advisor team reviews each mattress in person so we have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. To begin, we unbox the mattress and place it onto a bedframe. We first asses the cover, looking for features like cooling, softness, and cushioning. The next step is to evaluate how the bed performs under pressure, first by applying pressure with our hands and then in each sleep position. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if its good at relieving pressure. After that, well perform a series of tests for additional features, such as bounce, motion isolation, and edge support. The final testing portion is to determine if there are any new mattress smells present, which is known as off-gassing. These smells usually go away within a day or two, but its helpful to know if you can expect any right away, particularly if youre sensitive to odors. We then take all the information weve gathered to rate the bed in individual categories as well as how it stacks up overall. This gives us a thorough idea of who we would recommend this product to, helping our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

The term mattress in a box refers to any model from an online mattress brand that is compressed and placed in a box for delivery. The term bed in a bag may also be used. These mattresses are comparable to models sold in brick-and-mortar stores in terms of construction and performance. The key difference is pricing. Online brands face lower overhead costs because they do not operate many physical stores or employ commissioned salespeople. As a result, mattresses in a box tend to be a cheap mattress alternative. They are an ideal choice if youd like to save money and if you prefer the convenience of delivery to your home.

Preparing a mattress for shipping in a box is fairly straightforward. The mattress is compressed using a large press, encased in plastic, and rolled into a cylindrical shape. This process also known as roll packing reduces the mattress to a much more compact size, allowing it to fit in a box that can be shipped via standard ground delivery.

A common misconception among consumers is that roll packing causes permanent damage to the mattress. Mattresses in a box are designed to be highly resilient. Once the plastic wrapping is removed, the layers will expand until the bed reaches its full intended shape. The foams, coils, and other components should fully recover in one to two days without any sort of damage.

What Were Looking For

Construction: As we wrote in 2017, innerspring mattresses are filled with coiled steel springs for support, topped with batting for comfort, and wrapped in ticking. Some companies sell innerspring styles online and ship direct to consumer, but they are not as common of an offering among so-called bed-in-a-box companies as mattresses made primarily of foam, which can be squished into a box and easily shipped to your home. All-foam mattresses are the most prevalent option but over the last several years, more companies have started selling hybrid mattresses, meaning there is a layer of springs thats covered by a layer of foam. The construction of your mattress including the number of layers of foam and the type of foam, and whether or not it contains springs will determine how much support it provides and how comfortable you feel when you lie down at night. The type of foam and how its layered can also factor into temperature regulation and affect how warm or cool you feel when you sleep on it.

Sleep Quality: This is arguably the most important factor to consider when buying a mattress, but its also the hardest to quantify. Some of our writers and editors used sleep trackers or sleep-tracking apps to study their sleep quality. Others have anecdotal evidence, like waking up without an alarm or with less back pain, or never sweating through their sheets.

What To Look For In A Mattress

Despite all the differences in mattress preferences, a clear through-line emerged. Two factors came up again and again as priorities: The best mattresses in a box should be comfortable and supportive. Thats it. Everything else are just icing on the cake. Things to add-on to your mattress wish list as secondary bullet points.

How Long Does It Take To Fully Decompress

When you receive your mattress in a box, you will notice that it is still a little bit compressed, but this does not mean that it will be like that forever. You can easily let it decompress on its own by leaving it on your bed for a few days.

The Mattress in a box is designed to let some of their air out, so you can let your mattress fully decompress for it to be even more comfortable and supportive than before.

What To Consider When Buying A Mattress

When looking for a or elsewhere, there are some things to think about before hitting the Place Order button:

  • Firmness: On our firmness scale, 6.5/10 is considered medium firm. This is the industry standard because it suits a wide variety of different people. However, if youre a heavier person, you may want to find a firmer mattress that offers a bit more support. Lightweight people can opt for a softer mattress.
  • Feel: If you like something soft and slow-moving, consider getting a mattress with a memory foam comfort layer. If you want a mattress with more bounce, you may prefer a latex mattress and/or something with coils.
  • Sleeping position: Some people might just like a firmer or softer mattress, but most of the time, it depends on their sleeping position. Side sleepers are usually going to want to find a soft mattress, back sleepers should be looking for a medium-firm mattress, and those who need the best mattress for stomach sleepers should get something on the firmer end of the spectrum to properly support their hips.

Memory Foam Vs Pocket Spring Boxed Mattress

One of the main choices when purchasing a new mattress come to memory foam vs spring mattress. Which is entirely a personal preference, and you will find different beds to have unique features, so there isnt a blanket statement to fit the general pattern.

However, a memory foam mattress tends to be lighter, softer to sleep on, better for front sleepers and has zero partner distance. Plus they hug your body more, giving a greater pressure relief than a pocket spring mattress. The downside is they are hotter, have less bounce, and can be too hugging for people.

A pocket spring mattress is firmer, better for back sleepers, have more bounce, weighs more, and has more airflow. They tend to be thicker as well, so if you struggle to get out of bed. Then a spring mattress could be a better choice.

How did the delivery and setup go?

Easy peasy. The mattress arrived at our doorstep in a big box and my fiancé helped hold the box up while I cut it open. The mattress was sealed airtight in a large, thick plastic wrap, so I sliced it open and the two of us dragged the mattress to the desired location in our room and let it grow to its full size! Dont get me wrong, it is not light, and I would definitely say it was a job for two, but we were snuggled on our new mattress in less than30 minutes? Including making the bed! Just the fact that you can pick out a mattress online and sleep on it days later is pretty mind-blowing to me.

How firm is the mattress?

How comfortable was the mattress on a scale of 1 to 10?

How well did you sleep?

Superb. Like a sloth.

If you share the mattress with any other sleepers, can you speak to motion transfer?

If you could change anything about the mattress what would it be?
