What Are My Recycling Options

HOW TO DISPOSE OF YOUR OLD MATTRESS

At this time there is not a national mattress recycling program nor is there anything mandating that they must be recycled. The International Sleep Products Association will be meeting with mattress manufacturers and retailers on July 31 at the Las Vegas World Furniture Market to discuss building a national system to recycle used mattress materials and oppose what the group believes is costly and inefficient state legislation being proposed.

Finally you should follow local laws and regulations please dont dump old mattresses off the side of the road or into rivers or any place else for that matter improper disposal cost us all in the form of taxes for cleanup. Lastly do not attempt to burn it. Mattresses are big and fires can quickly get out of hand.

Let us know what you do with your old mattresses below.

Option : Recycle Your Mattress

Did you know that there is a large household object that can be recycled, but rarely is? Your mattress! Thats right, not only are they difficult to handle and dispose of but when you think about it almost every person goes through a few mattresses in their lifetime. Because more than 20 million are thrown away each year, that means we are talking about billions of mattresses choking our landfills. To make matters worse, even once compacted, each mattress takes up an average of 23 cubic feet of landfill space.

As mattresses begin to pile up, the springs inside start to break free and can clog the equipment used to compact the landfills waste. Then you have to deal with the fact that mattresses are filled with nasty chemicals that not only contaminate landfills but also can run off into local water supplies. This could hurt an entire citys eco-system if their water becomes spoiled.

This run-off not only damages our planet but also creates unsafe working conditions and pollution for workers. Not good!

Can I Take My Mattress To The Tip

5 Reasons You Should Consider Investing In A New Mattress ...

If all else fails, you can take your old mattress to the skip to dispose of it personally. However, we don’t recommend this course of action. As we mentioned earlier, mattresses are recyclable but, unless you find a good recycling plant, disposing of your mattress at the tip means that it will likely end up in landfill.

On top of that, simply dumping it might land you with a fee, so its worth reading on as we explore other, more environmentally-responsible ways to dispose of your mattress.

Can I Dump My Old Mattress In The Trash

Yes, you can dump your old mattress in the trash but take note that there are serious environmental consequences to doing so.

Roughly 20 million old mattresses and box springs end up as trash every single year in the U.S. The problem with this is that trash in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes heavily to climate change.

What’s worse is if the mattresses end up in open landfills instead of closed ones, they will contribute to 91% of all landfill methane emissions.

If, however, you insist on dumping your mattress in the garbage, I recommend that you still do it responsibly by following these steps:

  • Check to see if your town offers bulk trash pick-up.
  • Wrap your mattress in a plastic bag, preferably a recycled one.
  • Bring your mattress to the curb.
  • Getting rid of mattresses in a responsible way isnt easy. A growing number of landfills dont want them, since they are bulky, hard to crush and can jam machinery.

Dump It Drive It To Your Local Tip

If youre a householder with a car, often the cheapest option is to take your old mattress to the local council tip / civic amenity centre because tips dont normally charge anything. The only downside is that it might not be very near to where you live so the whole process can take up quite a bit of time.

Bear in mind that although you can roll up memory foam mattresses to take up less space, this is not possible with a traditional pocket sprung mattress. So, depending on the size of your car and type of mattress, you may not always be able to fit the mattress in your car.

Lastly, unlike householders, businesses either have to pay to use the council tip or are prohibited from using it altogether. So if you are a business with an old mattress to get rid of and plan on taking it to the tip, always call the council in advance to check if you are allowed, because you may need to find an alternative solution.

How Long Should Your Mattress Last

How long should your mattress last? Great question! Over time, every mattress is going to eventually lose its ability to provide the support and comfort you need for a good nights sleep. This means that everyone will need to dispose of their old mattresses a few times during their lifetime.

While the average life span of a mattress is 10 years, the type and quality of the mattress is going to ultimately determine how long your mattress will last. Lesser quality mattresses tend to last an average of 5 to 7 years.

Eco Terra Latex Mattresses last an average of an impressive 15 years.

Can You Take A Mattress To The Dump

If you have explored these other options, and cannot find anywhere to accept your mattress, you may be wondering how to get rid of your mattress. Avoid dumping or burning your mattress. Obviously, taking your mattress to the dump should be avoided if possible, but if you live in a very rural area or it is very bad shape this may be your only option. This is still a better option than burning it or dumping it somewhere that is not a designated dump or landfill. You should be especially careful about burning or illegally dumping your mattress. Dumping is illegal if you choose to dump your mattress on the side of the road or in someone elses dumpster, you could be fined. Burning a mattress can be extremely dangerous. If you burn a mattress, you are putting your own health and safety at risk. Burning a mattress also releases harmful toxins in the air that cause damage to the environment.

Does The Salvation Army Take Mattresses Can They Be Donated To Goodwill

Unfortunately, the Salvation Army does NOT take mattress donations. Their website explicitly states that beds and mattresses are a no-go for mattress recycling . While the Salvation Army is a great place to get rid of other furniture, they just arent equipped to handle the sort of space that a lot of mattresses provide.

On the other hand, Goodwill is one of the organizations that DOES take mattress donations and furniture, providing they are in good shape. Goodwill says on their website that any donated item should be free of rips and stains so that they can provide the most use to people who need them. They also recommend that for larger specialty items that you contact your local Goodwill first to make sure that they have the space for such an item. As long as its in good shape, Goodwill represents a great way to recycle.

Where Can You Donate A Used Mattress

Whether or not you can donate a used mattress mainly depends on three factors:

    • the condition of the mattress
    • the charities in your area
    • where you live

The first thing to think about when donating a mattress is whether or not you would sleep on it if someone gave it to you. Now, you would think this would be pretty obvious, but apparently, some people dont get it.

Basically, make sure your mattress is in good shape and doesnt have anything major wrong with it before you decide to donate it.

If you also have old box springs youd like to donate, first check to make sure the cover is firmly attached and that there are no stains, rips, or other damage. That mattress base isnt going to do anyone any good if theres something wrong with it.

Donating a mattress to charity can be a good way to keep it out of the landfill, but only if that mattress is in good condition. Thats why most charities wont accept your less-than-desirable mattress or furniture.

Please dont be disrespectful and take advantage of shelters or other charities by giving them a crummy mattress. You may think youre being eco-friendly, but theyre just going to have to throw your old mattress away when you donate a lemon.

If youre thinking about donating your old mattress, keep in mind that your bed should be in good condition, comfortable, hygienic, and free from bed bugs or anything else that would make someone not want to sleep on it.

    Homeless people.

Your battered mattress could help change a life.

How Do I Get Rid Of An Old Mattress

    Purple Mattress Review

If youve purchased your mattress from a brick and mortar store like a furniture or mattress store, you are most likely having the mattress delivered to your home. Nearly every retail store will include the removal of your old mattress in the price of delivery if you desire. Check with the salesperson when you are setting up delivery and make sure they can remove your old mattress. You may also want to check that they follow through with recycling old mattress they pick up and they do not just end up at the dump and then a landfill.

If it is a smaller independent mattress retailer, they may or may not be taking the extra steps to haul mattresses to a recycling center that accepts them. Usually, larger chains are set up to take them to a recycling center where they are disassembled, and whatever parts can be recycled are separated. This is usually a free service or included with delivery costs, and would be the simplest, least complicated way to get rid of that old worn-out mattress. You wont have to wrap or load up a large, heavy mattress, so if this is a possibility save your back and some time. Let the professionals remove it for you.
