Which Purple Should I Pick

To answer that question I needed to spend some time sleeping on both of them before I felt good about sharing my opinion. I bought the original Purple in the summer of 2017, and Purple sent me a Purple.3 in November of 2018. I put them side by side and spent some time sleeping on both before I put together the video above.

Fair warning, Im a huge fan of the original Purple mattress so I was a bit skeptical of the new Purple mattresses at first. When I received the Purple.3, I was instantly in love with it. However, after a few weeks I ended up moving it to storage and Im not sure when Ill take it out again. I encountered an issue with it and ended up going into more details about the polyfoam that they have on the edges of the mattress. Personally, I would choose the Original Purple over the New Purples and it is mainly due to my frame, Im just not big enough to justify the extra cost of moving up to their hybrid mattresses.

Purple Mattress Feel & Firmness

Given all four Purple beds use the same Hyper-Elastic Polymer for their top layer, all the models feel pretty similar.

This polymer acts and feels more like a gel material, so as you can imagine, the beds have a gel-like feel to them. As you lay down on the bed, you can feel the polymer below moving, compressing, and shifting.

I have to admit that the feeling is a little odd at first. In fact, the feel is just too weird for some people.

However, weve found that after spending a few nights on the mattress, the majority of people end up really enjoying the feel. Its like trying an exotic type of food for the first time. When you first taste it, youre not used to it, and you think its weird, but overall youre like, Hey, its not so bad. Then after you try it again, a light goes off, and you just cant get enough of it.

If you dont want to dive right in, though, Purple does allow you to order small samples of Hyper-Elastic Polymer on their website so you can feel it for yourself before pulling the trigger on an entire mattress.

How Does The Purple 4 Mattress Feel

The 4 layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer on top gives the Purple Hybrid Premier a gel-like feel. Yes, all of the beds from Purple will have the unique gel-like feel. However, because the 4.0 Purple mattress has the thickest slab of polymer out of the four Purple beds, it has the most distinct gel-like feel of all the models. As you lay down on the bed, you can feel the polymer beneath shifting, folding, and conforming to your body.

While creating the Purple 4 mattress review, weve found that Hyper-Elastic Polymer is not for everybody. Some folks find the feeling a little too odd. Theyre used to more traditional innerspring or memory foam beds, so the transition is a little weird. With that said, the majority of people who try it end up liking it. Just ask Slumber Yard team member Matt. He personally selected the Purple 4 to be his mattress because he liked it so much.
