How Do Mattress Warranties Work

What Is Excluded From Warranty Coverage

Mattress Warranty Claim Approved How Warranties Work

The Beautyrest mattress warranty excludes certain types of damage from coverage. As with most other brands, you cant make a warranty claim for personal comfort or firmness preferences. If you decide that your Beautyrest mattress isnt comfortable enough, you cant make a warranty claim. However, Simmons Bedding Company does offer a 100-night sleep trial on all Beautyrest mattresses. You can return your mattress for a refund or replacement for any reason during the trial period, so this is the time to decide if your new purchase meets your sleeping preferences.

The warranty excludes the normal softening of the memory foam or other materials over time. Normal wear and tear and damage that doesnt affect the performance of the mattress is not covered. Body indentations are not covered unless they exceed the depth specified using the warranty code on the law label attached to your mattress.

You cant make a warranty claim for damaged handles, border, or grid wires unless you buy a Beautyrest mattress with a removable cover.

Like the warranties offered by other brands, you cant make a warranty claim for spills or accidental damage. Problems caused by misuse or improper care are also excluded from the Beautyrest mattress warranty. We highly recommend buying a mattress protector to help avoid accidental damage to your new purchase.

Factors That Can Void A Mattress Warranty

There are several ways to void a mattress warranty, so its important to avoid these things if you want to preserve your warrantys coverage. Here are some of the most common factors that can void a warranty:

Also, be aware that manufacturers warranties do not offer coverage in the event that you simply dont like the mattress. If you find that a mattress doesnt suit your personal preferences, the warranty will most likely not cover you for a refund.

Things That Void A Warranty

The most common factors that lead to a mattress warranty being voided by the seller or manufacturer include the following:

  • Removal of the Law Tag: All mattresses will be sold with a small tag attached, usually somewhere on the back surface. This tag, referred to as the law tag, will read Do not remove this tag under penalty of law. The penalty of law in this case only applies to the seller or manufacturer, and the buyer is allowed to remove the tag at will without facing any legal repercussions. However, the law tag is considered a proof of purchase, and removing it will automatically void the warranty.
  • Improper Support: Warranties assume the buyer will utilize a box spring and/or bed frame that provides adequate support for the mattress. A warranty may be voided if the box spring is old, misshapen or damaged, or if the bed frame is not equipped with a stable metal bar that supports the mattress in the center. A standard mattress warranty will include specific support guidelines that the buyer must follow.
  • Failure to Unpackage the Mattress Quickly: Although compressing mattresses for shipping will not damage the bed, owners should remove their mattress from its boxes as quickly as possible. Some brands stipulate that the mattress must be removed from its boxes within a certain period of time, typically two to four weeks after the delivery date.

How Long Do Hybrid Mattresses Last

As long as you take care of it, a good hybrid many of which can be found in our best mattress in a box guide will last you several years. The length of the warranty is a good indicator of how long the manufacturer expects it to last.

Depending on the quality of the layers used in the hybrid, as well as how durable the main core is, some hybrids may last seven years. But top sleep brands such as Purple and Casper say their hybrids can last up to 10 years because they are made using high-quality materials and cutting-edge sleep technologies.

Because hybrid mattresses are made up of multiple layers, usually with a sturdy base and a softer top, they should not be flipped as this could damage the mattress and void the warranty. You should, however, be able to rotate most mattresses. For more information on this, read our feature on how often should you rotate your mattress?

How Does Your Mattress Warranty Work?

Its a good idea to keep your receipt so you have the date of purchase for reference when speaking to representatives. There may be additional paperwork and forms when filing the claim, so be sure to read the paperwork thoroughly.

How To File A Claim For A Mattress Warranty

If you believe your mattress has a physical flaw or defect that falls under the mattress warrantys coverage, then you may want to file a warranty claim. According to the FTC, heres how to go about it:

    1. Review your warrantys terms.

Before going through the trouble of filing a claim, make sure to review your warranty. If the warranty doesnt cover your complaint, then its probably not worth the headache of filing a claim.

    2. Start by contacting the mattress retailer.

If the retailer isnt helpful, then your next step is to contact the mattresss manufacturer. In both cases, send hard copies of letters via certified mail and request return receipts. Also be sure to keep copies of any and all communications. Clearly state the issue with your mattress and include a copy of the warranty terms that you believe to cover the issue.

    3. Once the retailer or manufacturer replies, submit the necessary paperwork.

The company will likely ask you to file official paperwork to initiate the warranty claim. Once the process is initiated, it may take several weeks before the claim is fully resolved.

    4. Understand the costs involved.

If the company sends an inspector to your home to assess the mattress, you may be responsible for the cost of the inspector. If the mattress is found to be defective, you may also be responsible for shipping it to an offsite location to be repaired. Know the potential costs involved so you can run a cost-benefit analysis.

How Do I Measure Mattress Sags

First, remove all your bedding so your mattress is bare. Find the deepest part of the indentation and use a measuring tape, yardstick, or ruler to measure the depth compared to the rest of the mattresss height. Be sure not to place too much pressure on the mattress when measuring so the indentation doesnt seem bigger. If the depth meets your warrantys coverage, file a claim with your mattresss company.

Kinds Of Warranties And How They Apply To Mattress Purchases

    Implied Warranties

To protect consumers, products and services come with an implied warranty, regardless of whether or not theres a written document. This guarantee is in addition to any written document given at the time of sale and includes the implied warranty of workmanlike quality for services, implied warranty of habitability for a home, and the warranty of title that gives the seller the right to sell the goods.

Example: Fruit that looks fresh but has hidden defects would violate the implied warranty of merchantability. All the food in a grocery store has an implied warranty as consumers assume it is fresh and ediblewhich is why they get a refund if it is not.

The warranty of fitness means a product is guaranteed for a specific purpose. This type of implied warranty is below the merchantability warranty. Why Are Warranties Important

The Federal Trade Commission defines a warranty as a promise made by a seller or manufacturer to stand behind a given product. A warranty guarantees that any product sold with structural flaws, faulty parts or other defects will be replaced or repaired at no added expense to the buyer. For this reason, most major purchases ? such as automobiles, homes, household appliances and electronic devices ? come with some sort of warranty. Per federal law, all product warranties must be available to consumers before a purchase is made.

For mattresses, two types of warranties typically apply.

    • The manufacturer or seller of the mattress will provide a , which promises to repair or replace a defective product as long as certain conditions are met. Written warranties provide coverage for a given length of time most written warranties for mattresses are valid for five, 10, 15 or 20 years, depending on the brand and the seller. Written warranties are not required by law.
    • Implied warranties, on the other hand, are protected by law in all 50 states. Implied warranties include two fundamental components. A warranty of merchantability ensures the product will perform all essential functions and meet consumer expectations. Additionally, a warranty of fitness guarantees that the product can be used for any and all specific purposes agreed upon by the buyer and seller.

Mattress Warranty Guide What You Need To Know

First, know that a 25-year mattress warranty does NOT mean that your mattress will last 25 years, but mattress companies certainly want you to believe this.

While a warranty can be a gesture of good faith on the part of the manufacturer, and an indication that the company stands behind its products, youll want to understand what your warranty can and cannot do for you. And there are several gotcha scenarios where you might inadvertently void your own warranty.

Your new mattress will probably be between 10 and 25 years in length for most manufacturers and some offer a lifetime warranty.

Also know that many of those super-long warranties are pro-rated after 5 or 10 years, meaning that a fee can be subtracted for the amount of time the mattress was used, in which case the warranty may not cover the full purchase price or replacement value of the mattress.

Understanding Mattress Warranties And How They Work

Federal law requires that a company provides a warranty on most consumer purchases like cars, homes, appliances, electronics, and even clothing. After all, its the one layer of insurance or protection that you have that keeps you from being stuck with a defective product.

A warranty is essentially an agreement or a promise between a manufacturer and a buyer to back up the product, and guarantees that the product will arrive free of any defects, structural flaws, damage, or other perils that render the product not usable as advertised. The warranty must be clearly presented to the consumer ahead of the purchase.

The FTC is the warranty watchdog, and you can complain to the agency if there are issues with a product you have purchased, in particular any failure on the part of the manufacturer to perform on the warranty.

For most mattresses, there are essentially two parts to the warranty that you should be aware of:

Factors That Typically Void A Warranty

    Matress Warranty test

The most common issues that lead to a mattress warranty being voided by the seller or manufacturer include the following:

    • Removal Of Fire Label Or Tag: All mattresses will be sold with a small tag attached, usually somewhere on the back surface. This tag, referred to as the law tag, will read Do not remove this tag under penalty of law. The penalty of law in this case only applies to the seller or manufacturer, but the buyer certainly can remove the tag at will without facing any legal repercussions. Since the law tag is considered a proof of purchase, in most cases taking it off will void your warranty. Leave it alone.

    • Unacceptable Support Surfaces: Warranties assume the buyer will employ an appropriate foundation for the mattress. Typically, a standard mattress warranty will include specific support guidelines that the buyer must follow.

    • Not Opening Your Mattress Immediately: Although compressing mattresses for shipping dont damage the mattress, it is the responsibility of the end user to remove their mattress from its shipping bags and boxes as quickly as possible. Some brands stipulate that the mattress must be removed from its boxes within a certain period of time, and I always recommended 2 weeks as the outside time limit for any rollicked or compressed mattress.

    • Transfer Of Ownership: Warranties typically dont convey to anyone who buys or receives a mattress from the original owner whose name is on record as the purchaser.
