How I Tested The Best Pillows
For the 15 standard sized pillows I tested, I slept on each one, and also asked my parents and my partner to sleep on finalists. While I slept on every pillow that I tested, I split up the other pillows according to the general material each tester preferreddown alternative, memory foam, and downand took notes on how they liked each pillow. Once I determined each persons favorite pillow, I then slept on it again to further assess. But since taking notes while asleep is notoriously unreliable, I also devised a series of objective tests for the most important factors of a good pillow.
I used an 11-pound bowling ball to approximate the weight of a human head in testing.
Pillows can notoriously retain heat, which leads to an uncomfortable, sweaty sleepthe cool side of the pillow is a sought-after quality for a reason. To test for breathability and temperature retention, I also put a hot water bottle with 99 degree wateras close as I could get to the resting human average of 98.6 degreeson each pillow for half an hour. I measured how hot the pillow got, and used a humidity sensor to gauge how much humidity was on the surface of the pillow once the hot water bottle was removed, to see how cool a pillow would remain once resting on it.
What Types Of Pillows Are There
Pillows can be constructed from a variety of different materials, each of which come with their own unique feel, level of support, and price-point. Some pillows also combine two or more materials to capitalize on the benefits of each one.
Polyfoam: Polyfoam, or polyurethane foam, is a synthetic material that offers moderate contouring. Polyfoam pillows are usually on the firmer side. They may be aerated with pincore holes to increase airflow, shredded to increase contouring, or blended with other materials to add a sturdier core. Polyfoam pillows are usually quite economical, though they may not last as long as other types.
Memory Foam: Memory foam is also known as viscoelastic polyfoam, a name that accurately captures the materials ability to contour around the sleepers body and then slowly regain its shape when pressure is lifted. The enhanced contouring gives it a softer feel than polyfoam, especially if the memory foam is shredded. Memory foam pillows tend to trap heat, an issue which some manufacturers try to solve by adding gel infusions or phase change material.
Down: Down refers to the soft, light feathers of a goose or duck that lay beneath the coarser outer feathers. A down pillow typically starts out fluffy and then compresses considerably when you lay on it. Down is moldable and durable, but it tends to be expensive and it may trigger allergies. How We Test Pillows
All pillows are evaluated in the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Textiles Lab. We’ve tested more than 130 different pillows in recent years, and we review data and scores from these tests before deciding which pillows to recommend for every type of sleeper.
