How To Choose A Luxury Pillow

There are a variety of luxury pillows available, and what works for one person may not be the best for another. Each shopper will have unique needs that need to be met. Understanding your needs and priorities prior to shopping will help you know how to find a pillow thats right for you. While luxury pillows are generally a valuable investment, there are certain factors that you should consider before making a purchase.

Do I Need To Wash My Pillows

As well as bed sheets, you should also be washing your pillows but there are different washing rules depending on the filling and material.

While its generally recommended that you wash your pillowcases at least every week or two, along with your sheets, you can get away with leaving your actual pillow for longer. You should aim to wash it at least every six months, if not more often .

How I Tested The Best Pillows

For the 15 standard sized pillows I tested, I slept on each one, and also asked my parents and my partner to sleep on finalists. While I slept on every pillow that I tested, I split up the other pillows according to the general material each tester preferreddown alternative, memory foam, and downand took notes on how they liked each pillow. Once I determined each persons favorite pillow, I then slept on it again to further assess. But since taking notes while asleep is notoriously unreliable, I also devised a series of objective tests for the most important factors of a good pillow.

I used an 11-pound bowling ball to approximate the weight of a human head in testing.

Pillows can notoriously retain heat, which leads to an uncomfortable, sweaty sleepthe cool side of the pillow is a sought-after quality for a reason. To test for breathability and temperature retention, I also put a hot water bottle with 99 degree wateras close as I could get to the resting human average of 98.6 degreeson each pillow for half an hour. I measured how hot the pillow got, and used a humidity sensor to gauge how much humidity was on the surface of the pillow once the hot water bottle was removed, to see how cool a pillow would remain once resting on it.

What Types Of Pillows Are There

Luxury Soft Velvet Cushion Cases Pink Blue Gold Black Grey Yellow Green ...

Pillows can be constructed from a variety of different materials, each of which come with their own unique feel, level of support, and price-point. Some pillows also combine two or more materials to capitalize on the benefits of each one.

Polyfoam: Polyfoam, or polyurethane foam, is a synthetic material that offers moderate contouring. Polyfoam pillows are usually on the firmer side. They may be aerated with pincore holes to increase airflow, shredded to increase contouring, or blended with other materials to add a sturdier core. Polyfoam pillows are usually quite economical, though they may not last as long as other types.

Memory Foam: Memory foam is also known as viscoelastic polyfoam, a name that accurately captures the materials ability to contour around the sleepers body and then slowly regain its shape when pressure is lifted. The enhanced contouring gives it a softer feel than polyfoam, especially if the memory foam is shredded. Memory foam pillows tend to trap heat, an issue which some manufacturers try to solve by adding gel infusions or phase change material.

Down: Down refers to the soft, light feathers of a goose or duck that lay beneath the coarser outer feathers. A down pillow typically starts out fluffy and then compresses considerably when you lay on it. Down is moldable and durable, but it tends to be expensive and it may trigger allergies. Shoppers interested in animal welfare may want to look for ethically sourced and cruelty-free down.

    Our Pillow Testing Methodology

To learn more about what to look for in a pillow, we spoke with Rebecca Robbins, sleep researcher, author, and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate scientist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. However, there is no one-size-fits-all, best pillow for everyone.

Individual anatomy, sleep habits, and preferences profoundly impact how comfortable a pillow will be from person to person. For that reason, our rating criteria for this guide relied heavily on the following considerations:

Return policy and trial period: It’s impossible to know how comfortable a pillow is going to be for you until you sleep on it, despite how comprehensive our guide aims to be. “The most important thing is trying the pillows out to see what works for you,” said Robbins, which includes being able to touch, lay on, and sleep with a pillow before deciding if it’s right for you. For this guide, we only considered pillows that accept returns of used merchandise for a full refund with at least a 30-day trial window, which gives you ample time to decide if a pillow is right for you.

Adjustability: We prioritized adjustable pillows with removable inserts or shredded fill for dialing in your perfect loft. This creates a more custom pillow that would better suit your needs.

    Consider The Filling Material

The fill of a pillow can make a dramatic difference in how it feels to sleep on it, and theres a wide variety of fillings on the market. Its important to select the pillow filling that best aligns with your sleeping preferences and lifestyle, says Gorovoy. She recommends considering the price, support level, maintenance, and whether the pillow is hypoallergenic.

I’ve spent several months sleeping with these pillows on and off, and they haven’t gone flat or gotten lumpy. They are a little less lofty and bouncy than when I first got them, but I like that since it gives them a more lived-in feel.

    How Much Do Pillows Cost

You can find pillows at a range of price points, anywhere from $10 to several hundred dollars. It’s not always the case that you have to spend more to get a good pillow.

Considering how much of our lives we spend sleeping, Robbins recommends thinking of a pillow as an investment that will pay you back in better sleep. Our favorite pillow is entirely customizable and costs about $60, though you can often find it on sale for as little as $40 during the holidays and other sales events.

    What Is Pillow Loft

Pillow loft refers to the height, or thickness, of a pillow when it is resting on a flat surface. Low loft is typically defined as less than 3 inches, medium loft as between 3 and 5 inches, and high loft as more than 5 inches. When considering pillow loft, it helps to remember that most pillows compress when you lay on them. The ideal loft depends on several factors:

    • You want a less expensive pillow
    • You want a pillow that maintains its shape

Of all the down options that we tried, the best was Parachute Down Pillow. It comes in three firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. . Most down pillows I tried had these options, and a nice thing to have if, for example, you prefer the softness and warmth of down but would like a firmer choice.

Down pillows tend to be more expensive and require more upkeep than pillows stuffed with other material, but many people prefer their softer feel. John Spear, general manager of the Hotel Drisco, noted that of all the selections on their pillow menu, down was by far the most popular. Down is the traditional material of luxury pillows: its great at insulation, so it retains warmth, and it’s very soft. On the other hand, down is not not so great if youre a hot sleeper. There are also animal welfare concerns with down, since it comes from geese and ducks. While some people may think they have a down allergy, they might actually be reacting to dust mites living inside the down or feathers in their pillow, and prefer a foam option.

    Filling And Cover Materials

More than 90% of sleeping comfort comes from the material in which your pillow is made. The cover also has a key role in terms of breathability for example. But everything about comfort and pressure point support comes from inside the pillow. At some point, one pillow is no better than another. Its just that it will provide different comfort and support.

The filing is an essential criterion. In terms of composition, the pillow can be made of feathers, microfiber, shape memory, or even wool and foam. Note that there are synthetic pillows but they last less well over time . Each layer of material has its advantage:

    • Down or feather pillows

They are modular in terms of flexibility and firmness and provide very pleasant sleeping comfort. They however tend to heat up and keep the heat in the summer which will not be suitable for people with allergies. The LAYR Customizable Pillow is a typical example of a down pillow.

    • Memory foam pillows

Memory foam pillows adjust perfectly to the contours and shapes of the head, whatever it is. Soft, they are not favored by people who prefer sustained robustness. They also come with an off-gassing smell.

The elasticity of latex pillows will allow good support to the neck. Often sold at high prices, they have an off-gassing odor when opening the package which can be a turnoff. A typical example is the Naturepedic Organic 2-in-1 Adjustable Latex Pillow.

    • Polyester fiber pillows

Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Memory Foam Pillow

Why We Love It: Its loaded with features to keep you cool and comes in two different profiles.

What to Consider: The brand doesnt specify the exact fabric of the cover.

Hot sleepers are all too familiar with the night-long struggle of flipping the pillow in search of that elusive cool spot. The best fabrics for cooling include organic cotton, silk, rayon derived from bamboo, and fabric blends infused with heat-dissipating phase change material, says Breus. Brooklyn Beddings cooling memory foam pillow solves that dilemma with its open-cell memory foam, which uses pin core ventilation to increase airflow along with a cooling gel surface that draws heat away from you. The cover is made of a circular knit as well for extra breathability. Opt for a low or high profile style, depending on whether you sleep on your front or back. The pillows are machine-washable and include a 3-year warranty for any defects so you can rest assured your investment is safe. In addition to keeping you cool, theyre also allergen-resistant and antimicrobial, so youll likely stay congestion-free as well.

Price at time of publish: $129 for queen-size

    Best Pillow For Stomach Sleepers

Soft but not too thin, the Parachute Down-Alternative Pillow has the perfect loft for stomach sleepers who want just a bit of cushion.

    • Fill: Superfine microfiber
    • Hypoallergenic: Yes
    • Sizes available: Standard and king
    • Care instructions: Dry clean or machine wash cool on a delicate cycle using mild, liquid laundry detergent. Tumble dry low with wool dryer balls.
    • Who it’s best for: Stomach sleepers

Pros: Soft and pillowy, made from hypoallergenic down alternative, folds easily for added support when lying on your side or back, stays cool, 60-day return window

Cons: Needs to be fluffed regularly to retain its shape, doesn’t offer enough support for sleepers who spend the majority of the night on their back or side and therefore not the best choice for guest bedrooms, fill cannot be adjusted

Stomach sleepers generally require the least amount of pillow support since your head and spine are already pretty close to alignment when lying on your stomach. Most stomach sleepers would benefit from a soft pillow with just a bit of loft, and for that, the Parachute Down-Alternative Pillow is our top choice.

This is the only pillow that received high marks for comfort from my husband, who is an avowed stomach sleeper and finds most pillows too lofty. The Parachute pillow elevates his head just enough to alleviate any neck strain, and the sateen cotton encasement keeps the pillow remarkably cool all night long, ideal for those, like him, who run hot.

    How We Test Pillows

All pillows are evaluated in the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Textiles Lab. We’ve tested more than 130 different pillows in recent years, and we review data and scores from these tests before deciding which pillows to recommend for every type of sleeper.

In the Lab, we first check the care labels to make sure they’re washable , then we wash them five times to see whether they’ll actually hold up to laundering. We also look at how well they fit into a pillowcase and we perform support and recovery tests that mimic the pressure from your head lying on it all night: A weight is left on the pillow for an extended period then we measure how quickly it returns to its original shape.

In addition to Lab testing, we also have our consumer testers try them out at home for in-depth feedback on things like comfort, support, temperature regulation and more. Testers are assigned a pillow based on an initial survey to make sure they’re getting a good match for their sleep styles, then they’re given weeks to sleep on it before providing both scored and open-ended responses.
