Most King Koil Mattresses Are No
Innerspring mattresses need to be rotated at least once per year to prevent or minimize sagging. Most King Koil mattresses are no-flip, meaning youll have to rotate them. If the innerspring mattress you buy is two-sided, then you can flip it once per year to help slow down the sagging process. On the plus side, King Koil mattresses boast high-quality materials that help minimize the amount of sagging over time. So, even if you forget to flip the mattress, theres no guarantee that it will experience sagging.
Different Types Of Mattress Coil Systems
Innerspring mattresses and hybrid mattresses have a coil spring system. Steels coils underneath the comfort layers provide a responsive and supportive base to the mattress. There are four coil systems commonly found in today’s innerspring beds:
They each have different benefits and disadvantages and are used in mattresses with different goals – whether that be motion transfer reduction, pressure relief, responsiveness, etc.
How Many Coils Is Enough
Pardon me, but I come at this from the point of view that unlike a CNN expert which is anybody who is on their side at that moment I am a real expert in the mattress business. I started in this business 30 years ago as a delivery driver, I moved up to sales and then management and then owned my own company selling “Sleep”, which I have been doing now for 30 years. Ive competed against all the largest retailers in Canada many that do now not exist any more and for the most part if the consumer is listening, I win and If I win: they win too.I have seen every phony sale and every trick in this business over the 30 years that I have spent trying to make a living making the mattress industry more understood by the consumer. Have you ever seen the Facebook posts about. Is there ever a day mattresses are not on sale? Today I want to talk about coil counts and foam qualities.
I like drawing comparisons between cars and food to paint pictures about what is real and what makes it easy for someone with no knowledge of sleep or mattresses on the sales and retail floor to sell a consumer with no knowledge about what makes a good mattress.
Its always about the quality of the foam on top of springs, and if you can understand this simple statement, you will pay less for a mattress, sleep better and be far more comfortable for much longer in your new purchase than if you play the coil count game that most retailers want to play.

What Is Coil Gauge Count
The gauge number of a mattress coil indicates the mattress firmness. The lower the gauge number of the mattress coil, the thicker the coil. Therefore, the lower the gauge number, the firmer and stiffer the mattress will feel, offering a harder surface for the mattress.
Mattress coil gauges typically range from 12 to 15. If youre looking for a forgiving mattress, an ideal gauge number would be 14. However, if youre looking for a mattress that offers more firm support, an ideal gauge number would be 13 or lower.
Mattresses with lower coil gauges typically last longer because the thicker wire wears out slower over time. However, most consumers replace their mattress before the coils wear out, regardless of their gauge, and therefore gauge number should not be a heavy consideration in regards to durability.
Are Pocket Coils Good For Back Pain
Pocket coil systems can be great for back pain sufferers. Unlike open coil systems, pocketed coils can operate independently of one another, contouring to your curves much better than a network of coils all attached to one another.
Instead of just compressing in a U-shape that curves under the heaviest parts of your body, pocket coils can compress and rise to fit your unique body shape and sleep position. At the same time, coils also offer more support and resistance than even the most durable foams.
This combination of support and flexibility can be a boon for you if you suffer back pain.

How Many Coils Should Be In A Mattress
It has become a trend in the mattress industry that a high coil count is synonymous with quality. When discussing best practices, here is the generally accepted minimum amount of coils each mattress should have:
- Full: 300-500
- Queen: 400-600
- King: 480-800
At Texas Mattress Makers, we tend to use a slightly higher-than-average coil count. For example, one of our medium-support mattresses, the Santa Barbara mattress, has the following coil count:
- Full: 726
As a high-end example, all of our Quantum coil mattresses have the following coil count:
- Full: 1,575
- Queen: 1,872
- King: 2,384
Its important to keep in mind that the quality of a mattress cannot be measured by its coil count alone, so no mattress coil count chart should be viewed as ironclad law.
The quality of your mattress coils also depends on how the coil is constructed, the coil gauge , and the coil durability. As long as the coils are made of quality materials, they will be more durable and last longer. The quality of the coils can determine how easy it will be to break in a mattress so it will be the most comfortable for you long-term.
Different Types Of Mattress Support
When we think of a mattress, we often pay the most attention to how soft or firm it is. When we lie down on a mattress, we may describe it as either, “comfortable” or “uncomfortable.” With so much attention to the comfort a mattress provides, we often don’t stop to think about the support inside.
The support a mattress gives will have the most impact on not only our quality of sleep but also how we perform during our waking hours. Support is the most important factor when considering which mattress is going to be the best for you.
In innerspring mattresses, support comes from the coil system. In a foam mattress, however, there are no coils, so the support systems consist of a foam core at the center of the mattress, and other foam layers. We will discuss the types of coil systems as well as foam cores and latex cores.

Q: How Are Allergens Prevented From Entering The Coil Mattress
Allergens such as dust mites or mould and mildew can build up inside an innerspring mattress, causing an allergic reaction for many people.
You can opt for mattresses that have the most solid core, like memory foam or latex, to help minimize the likelihood of allergens accumulating inside them. Models with coils and springs, unfortunately, give dust mites or similar nasties many gaps and spaces to hide.
Washing your bed linen at high temperatures, but without harmful chemicals, will also help to kill any allergens in your bedding, and anti-allergy mattress protectors will provide a barrier between you and them.

How Long Do Innerspring Mattresses Last
The basic techniques and materials used to make innerspring mattresses date back centuries, and are time-tested. Assuming you buy a good quality innerspring or pocketed coil mattress from a reputable brand and retailer, your new mattress should last in the neighborhood of 8 to 10 years. It could be more or less depending on your circumstances, sleep style and body weight, but a quality innerspring mattress should hold up well and resist body impressions as well as newer-technology memory foam.
How Do Gauge And Coil Count Matter
Gauge refers to coil thickness and the higher the gauge, the thinner the metal. Pocket coils, used in hybrids are the highest gauge, typically between 14 and 18. Some hybrids provide zoned support, using higher gauge coils beneath the heavier sections such as the shoulder and hip regions to provide more cushion, and lower gauge coils across the rest of the mattress for firmer support in those areas.
Higher gauge coils provide a softer, springier feel, while lower gauge coils offer firmer support. Coil gauge in innerspring mattresses typically range between 12 and 15.
The presence of more coils makes your bed sturdy and prolongs its life, but the optimum coil count in hybrids is between 800-1000 for a queen size. In a bed with more than 1000 coil count the difference in comfort is negligible. Coil count is often used by mattress manufacturers as a marketing gimmick to increase the price. The more coils there are, the higher the retail cost.

Q: Which Is Better Open Coil Or Pocket Sprung Mattress
Spring mattresses come in open coils or pocketed coil varieties.
Open coil mattresses are the best if you are on a budget as these mattresses are easily mass-produced at low cost. They are constructed from one continuous length of wire, formed in individual springs, and padded with various fabrics.
With pocketed coils or pocket sprung options, the springs move independently, so there is limited motion transfer and they contour around your individual shape and size, so tend to be a bit more comfortable. Motion isolation also means that you are less likely to be disturbed if your partner moves around, compared to an open coil model.
Hybrid innerspring mattress types also exist which give you a high number of coils plus layers of foam on top of the mattress which are great options for pressure points relief.
Ghostbed Flex Hybrid Mattress
The GhostBed Flex mattress is one of the more expensive hybrid models in the Canadian market, but its quality lives up to your expectations, hands down. This is a 13 mattress composed of seven different layers that all work in harmony to provide one of the most comfortable and supportive resting places money can buy. One of the best things about this mattress is that it is equally perfect for side sleepers, back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combo sleepers. This is a medium-firm mattress for people who appreciate a little extra support but still enjoy a soft, cloud-floating experience at night. If you purchase this bed, you will be able to try it out at home for 101 nights, and if its a good fit for you, the 25-year warranty will offer some excellent protection for your investment.

Do More Coils Make A Better Mattress The Core Of The Matter
The coils, also known as the core or the innerspring unit, provide the main support for the body. Proper support is essential not only for a good night’s sleep, but for maintaining a healthy spine. When considering the core of an innerspring mattress, there are a number of important factors: the number of coils used throughout the mattress, the way the coils are constructed, and the shape of the coils.

Feel Of Pocketed Coils
How it feels to lie on pocketed coils depends on your sleeping style. Side, back, and stomach sleepers all have different firmness needs, but pocketed coils can suit all positions.
Back sleepers will enjoy that pocketed coils can compress under the torso and buttocks yet rise to fill in the gap in the lumbar region. A good mattress for back sleeping offers a medium to firm feel. Many back sleepers enjoy a medium-firm mattress with bouncy coils.
Stomach sleepers will appreciate the fact that pocketed coils combined with firm foams can prevent their hips from sinking into the mattress and over-arching the spine. A mattress for stomach sleeping offers a firm feel to minimize sinkage.
Side sleepers will enjoy that pocket coils can compress under the hips and shoulders to prevent pain in these pressure points. Excellent mattresses for side sleeping feature soft to medium feels for maximum pressure relief.
How To Do It
Purchase a firm innerspring mattress, that is, one with minimal padding â preferably no more than two inches of padding in the comfort layer. Most mattress brands offer at least one model that meets this criteria. The advantage of this is that firm models tend to have fewer and less severe sagging problems than do models with thick comfort layers / pillow tops. Firm models also tend to be highly affordable because they lack significant padding.
Then, if you wish to soften the mattress, purchase a mattress topper. The thicker the topper is, the softer it tends to make the mattress.
The advantage of this buying strategy is that if the topper deteriorates, compresses or sags, then only it needs to be replaced as opposed to the entire mattress.
Consumers who have used this buying strategy tend to report good comfort, durability and money-saving results.
