How To Disinfect Bed Sheets

HOW TO DEEP CLEAN YOUR MATTRESS WITH 1 INGREDIENT!

Cleaning your mattress won’t do much good if you still sleep on dirty bed sheets! Ideally, youll want to wash your sheets once every week to keep your bedding free from dust, bacteria, pet dander, and allergens.Heres how:

  • Strip the bed, and put the sheets in the washer on the hottest setting the fabric can handle.
  • Use a reputable laundry detergent and fabric softener.
  • Dry sheets in direct sunlight or on a high dryer setting as the heat will act as a natural disinfectant.
  • Dress the bed with your clean, dry sheets.
  • How To Remove Sweat Stains From A Mattress

You sweat while you sleep, and over time all that body oil can leave its mark on your beloved mattress. Luckily, there are a number of ways to clean a yellow-stained mattress.

    WaterClean rags

In the first instance, try just adding baking soda to the stain – gently rub it in, leave for 15 minutes, and then vacuum.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll need a stronger solution. As with the technique we covered for treating urine stains above, this method uses hydrogen peroxide, which is very effective but can bleach some materials, so use it sparingly, and consider testing it on a small area of the mattress before using it on larger stains.

Alternatively, use an enzyme-based spot-cleaning product, such as Woolite Pet Stain and Odor Remover – again, test it on a small area first. Here’s what to do…

    1. Create a cleaning solutionMix one cup of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of warm water, and between one quarter and one third of a cup of liquid dish soap. Add the solution to a spray bottle.

    2. Spray the stainSpritz the stain and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes. You may need to work the mixture in with a cloth or brush.

    3. Blot with waterThis will remove the cleaning solution, being careful not to soak the mattress. Then let the stain air dry. After this assess the area – if any stain remains, repeat steps one to three.

    Remove Odors With Baking Soda

You should now have a clean-looking mattress with no stains or infestations. That doesnt mean that youve finished your work, though. Your mattress could still contain unpleasant odors.

Get bad smells out of a mattress with baking soda. Although an important part of cooking, baking soda is also a celebrated odor absorber and one of the best mattress deodorizers around. It can make your mattress smell fresh and clean again.

    • Large box of baking soda
    • A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment and crevice tool
    • Blunt utensil for scraping

Sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress. Be generous with the baking soda its not uncommon to use a whole box on a mattress. Let the baking soda stay on your mattress for 24 hours to deodorize it. Then, vacuum up the baking soda.

If you have cleaned up your mattress so that it smells better and looks more presentable but decide that its really time for a new mattress, you wont have done all that cleaning for nothing. A good rule of thumb is to flip your mattress every three months to prevent sagging. However, if you have a Casper mattress, you dont need to flip it. If you sleep on one side of the bed or sleep with a partner that is significantly heavier than you, then you should rotate the bed 180 degrees every three to six months.

How Often Should You Clean A Mattress

There’s no hard and fast rule for how often a mattress needs to be cleaned. It all depends on the mattress and the person sleeping on it, but every six months is advisable.

If you’re in the habit of flipping or rotating your mattress every three to six months , it’s worth taking a little extra time to clean your mattress while you do it.

14% of members we surveyed in March 2021 had never cleaned their mattress.

If you suffer from allergies, you should clean your mattress whenever the tell-tale symptoms of a runny nose, itchy throat and dry eyes start to worsen.

It also depends on how breathable the mattress is.

Every mattress we review is tested for how well moisture passes through it the more breathable a mattress is, the less likely it is to stockpile sweat.

You should still want to vacuum it, though, especially if you have allergies or pets that like to crawl under your bed.

    Tackle Any Mattress Stains

You should always try to tackle any stains as soon as they occur, but sometimes this isn’t always possible.

The best way to remove mattress stains is to use a gentle laundry detergent or dish soap mixed with lukewarm water. Gently dab – don’t rub! – the stain with a cloth or sponge to lift the stain as much as possible.

An important note to remember when you’re deep cleaning your mattress at home is that you shouldn’t use any harsh chemicals or get it too wet as this can damage the integrity of the mattress.

If the urine has already dried by the time you discover the accident, youll have to follow some extra steps to remove it properly. First, you need to rehydrate the stain. This can make it smell worse initially, but is the only way to remove the pee.

Use the same solution of vinegar, detergent, and water to soak the stained area, and then cover with plastic such as Saran Wrap or a clean garbage bag, and leave the stain for 24 hours. This ensures that the urine is rehydrated and the solution can work on cleaning it without drying out.

After soaking the stain, remove the plastic covering and allow the mattress to air dry. This may take up to 12 hours. Once dry, check the area for stains or odor. You may need to repeat the cleaning process several times to completely remove all traces of the urine.
