For sectional sofas, put 2 of your largest pillows in the sides. Layer a slightly smaller square pillow in front of those side pillows.

For the corner, put your largest pillow in the back, with a slightly smaller in front of that and a rectangle pillow in the very front.

Offset these three pillows slightly so they look casual and comfortable, like in this example from my living room.

Choosing Throw Pillow Inserts

Many retailers sell pillow covers and inserts separately. Of course, you can buy some pillows with the insert included. Note: If you are purchasing pillows online, be sure to double check the description to determine if you are buying just a pillow cover OR a pillow cover with the insert included.

The most popular pillow insert fills are polyester, down, and down alternative. Polyester is a synthetic material that is thick, full and keeps its shape. Its less expensive than down, but also doesnt look nearly as lush as down. This is the foamy, unmalleable pillow insert you find in a Target or Homegoods pillow .

Down is more expensive and much softer than polyester. However, it tends to flatten when laid on and some people are allergic to down feathers. Also, you might see feathers poking through the fabric!

I prefer down alternative pillow inserts because they are softer and more luxurious than polyester but without the allergens of down. They arent stiff and they dont fully flatten when laid on . Not to mention you wont have little feathers poking you in the head or back! Down alternative inserts are malleable enough to still do the karate chop !

For smaller pieces, I like to use one longer bolster. It adds coziness without feeling cluttered.

If you are going to use multiple pillows, just pare down the number. I like to use 3 and then drape a throw over the center to balance. Ill usually use slightly smaller 20 pillows as well to keep the scale appropriate.

Creating pillow groups is a big part of knowing how to decorate a couch with pillows. Two pillows a larger and a smaller one can look great in a corner of a loveseat. If you have three pillows, put two in one corner and the third one opposite. Five is the magic number on a couch, giving you a lot more freedom to play with styling. You can place two pairs on each corner and a lumbar pillow in the middle. A three-by-two distribution can also look lovely.

How To Measure Throw Pillow Sizes

People make mistakes in measuring the size of a throw pillow and end up ordering the wrong one with different dimensions. Always bear in mind the dimensions of a pillow refer to pillows cover length and width when its kept completely flat without an insert.

Measurement of pillows is always taken along corners. Sizes obtained by measurements are rounded up to 0.5 inches ie. If the obtained measurement would be 19.6×19.6.It would be therefore called a 20×20 pillow.

Now, If you have a zipped pillow with removable inserts, you can measure it by putting the insert out. But if the pillow is fully stitched you have to stretch the top two corners and pull the top seam very tightly meanwhile, tell your friend or partner to measure it.

If you cannot make it linear, extend the measurement by around half-inch. You would get a closer value.
