Can Urine On A Mattress Cause Mold
Urine may dry, but if not properly removed, it leaves behind the salt found in uric acid. If you experience night sweats or simply live in a humid or rainy climate, this salt will continually draw in moisture. When the affected area becomes filled with moisture, it reactivates, disturbing odors and creating a breeding ground for bacteria-causing mold.
Key Spray Bottle Helpful Hints:
If you still have issues with clogging, then try what these readers did successfully:
My sprayer clogged too, but I simply took a thin rag/washcloth and dabbed/rubbed it on the stains. All of it disappeared. UH-mazing!
I had trouble with it clogging too, so I put it in a squirt bottle, like a ketchup bottle and squirted it onto the area. Then I spread it around some with a white washcloth. Worked wonders!

There are many joys of parenting. One of those joys is not having to remove pee stains from a mattress, a mattress that had a waterproof mattress protector on it.
One of my daughters, unfortunately, has an issue with wetting the bed at night. While shes been potty trained for over a year, and doesnt wet her bed every night, its still regularly happening. Unfortunately, this has led to urine stains on her mattress. Multiple urine stains that smell.
The waterproof mattress protectors we placed under our daughters sheets, failed. I think the heat from the dryer or their less than top-of-the-line materials, left them anything but waterproof.
This stank because they were new mattresses.
The Pee Stained Mattresses Before Cleaning:
Blotting Gets Pee Out Of The Mattress
If the stain is still wet start blotting not rubbing the stain and soak as much of the pee out of the mattress with the towel you can. If you rub its just going to make the stain bigger. If its dry, theres not a lot you can do.
From this point, its time to soak the stain with white vinegar, be pretty generous here, then use a towel to blot as much of the vinegar out of the mattress as possible. Take your time here and be as thorough as you can.

Blot Off The Excess Urine
Start by removing all the covers and accessories on your bed to get the mattress bare. Then, wash the bedding according to their recommended care practices to remove the urine odor and stains. As for the mattress, prepare a towel and blot off the excess urine.
Do not press or rub the urine because it will spread it to other areas of the mattress or cause the liquid to get soaked deeper. Instead, allow the towel or several paper towels to soak off the pee. This will make stain and odor removal easier.

Whoa! I used this because my daughter who uses night training pants that failed to work last night had peed all over MY bed. She peed all over my new memory foam mattress topper.
I didnt take photos because I honestly didnt think this would work. But alas it disappeared before my eyes. Thanks a million. Not only is the stain gone, but the smell too. Wow!

Remove Foul Odors And Sweat Stains On A Mattress By Adding Essentials Oils
Cleaning products like hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are perfect for removing stains and smells caused by urine. However, cleaning with them can produce a smell that is sometimes worse than the urine itself. While this odor fades quickly and does not linger like the pee smell itself, there are ways to counteract these smells while cleaning.
Using essential oils is the best way to neutralize odors and ensure your home smells precisely the way you like. The following DIY cleaning solution will remove stains and leave your home smelling heavenly.
- 15 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 2 cups baking soda
Combine the following ingredients in a medium spray bottle. Shake well and treat the area to clean urine stains. Some homeowners like to use alternative essential oil scents, which is perfectly fine.
Many suggest using lavender essential oils due to its effectiveness as a sleep aid. However, you can use whatever scent is your favorite. This method can also act as a carpet cleaning solution for pet urine.
Sprinkle Mattress Pee Stain With Baking Soda
Once the stain is lifted, help remove moisture and any lingering smell with a generous sprinkle of baking soda. Truly, dont skimp here, use the whole carton from the back of the freezer if you have one laying around. Let the area dry completely for several hours before vacuuming thoroughly.
One of the best qualities of memory foam is that it keeps things in one place. In terms of your sleeping body, thats a great element, but unfortunately, this includes urine. To get that pee stain and smell out, saturate the spot with vinegar. Let it sit for a few hours, and then use a paper towel to soak up the vinegar and urine. When it comes to memory foam mattresses the best way to get the pee out is similar to other mattresses, which means a lot of blotting, soaking, and blotting again. One major difference is that memory foam is far denser and could take days, rather than hours, to dry completely.
A quick warning. When dealing with bodily fluids, it might be tempting to bring out the big biohazard guns and reach for the bleach or some other super strong cleaner, but the Casper mattress company offers a wise warning against it. Heres their advice: Though you may be tempted to try something that seems stronger, you should never, ever use harsh substances like bleach or cleaners with toxic chemicals when cleaning your mattress. Not only can this damage the fabric, but lingering toxins can be harmful to your health.

Do Air Fresheners Get Rid Of Urine Smell
Air fresheners may mask the smell but cannot remove urine. Therefore, they will not permanently rid your bed from the urine odor. To eliminate the smell for good, you will need to lift and remove the stain. This will require a cleaning agent like vinegar, baking soda, a protease enzyme, or hydrogen peroxide. Depending on the cause and age of your urine stain, we suggest following one of the above methods.
Eliminate Cigarette Smoke Smell From Mattress With Essential Oils
Even a memory foam mattress can benefit from these cleaning tips. Dig out a bottle of essential oils like citrus, lavender, or any other flavor you like.
- 1 tablespoon of essential oils
- 1 cup of water
Cover the entire mattress in a fine mist from the spray bottle. Not only should this help clean urine up, but it will eliminate cigarette smoke smell from mattress, as well as other unpleasant odors.
Wait for the deodorizer to evaporate in the air, and the odor should be gone. Theres no need for blotting the mattress with liquids and paper towels, and intensifying the problem.
Youll think that your mattress smells lovely. However, thats not the only smell you need to eradicate. Sometimes you will need to clean a down comforter at home, too. Essential oils can also take care of this issue.

The Harsh Reality: Why You Shouldnt Use Chemical Cleaners On A Mattress
Commercial cleaning products often contain potentially toxic chemicals. Even if the ingredients havent been found to be carcinogenic, many people are allergic to certain substances, have respiratory conditions or sensitive skin that can be irritated by harsh chemicals. Since your mattress is something you spend a lot of time with, be careful about the cleaning solutions you get up close and personal to!
Dr. Weil mentions some of the toxic substances to watch out for in commercial cleaners. The American Lung Association warns of health risks from volatile organic compounds , and they suggest using safer alternatives such as vinegar and baking soda.
Here Are The 3 Simple Ingredients To Clean A Mattress:
If you do not have these items already, you can still get them for a fraction of the cost for professional stain removal.
Instructions: Place the baking soda into the spray bottle using a funnel. Next add the 3% hydrogen peroxide, and finally add a drop of liquid hand dishwashing soap. I useDawn® brand.
Next, swish the bottle around gently. DO NOT SHAKE the bottle as this tends to clog the siphon straw.
You must use this mixture relatively quickly, and it cannot be saved for later use. The recipe only works if you use it immediately, because the cleaning byproducts and chemical interactions remain active only for a short time.
Also, the chemical reaction of all three ingredients combined can cause the mixture to ooze and leak out of the bottle, creating a mess if you leave the bottle sitting around.

How Do You Get Pee Out Of A Mattress Without Vinegar
If you dont have vinegar available, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can be a great swap for getting pee out of a mattress. Youll want to make a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and liquid detergent:
- 1 part baking soda
- 5 parts hydrogen peroxide
- A dash of liquid detergent
Once youve created your baking soda solution, spray the stain with the solution and let it sit until the solution is dried. Then, vacuum up any remaining residue from the site.
How Do I Remove Existing Urine Stains
Existing urine stains may require more substantial cleaning solutions. In most cases, a solution of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap should suffice.
In a spray bottle, combine:
- 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide
- 3 tablespoons baking soda
- 2 to 4 drops of dish soap or liquid laundry detergent
Using the spray bottle, generously apply the solution to the stained areas of the mattress. Allow the solution to soak in, and wait several hours for it to dry. You will start to see a solid layer of baking soda forming on the mattress surface. Once dry, vacuum off the baking soda, and repeat as necessary. If moisture remains, you can spread a layer of baking soda out on the bed to help absorb it.
While hydrogen peroxide can help loosen set-in stains, it can also bleach certain materials, and it may damage or discolor delicate materials like memory foam. To avoid bleaching your bedding, remove any colored materials before using this cleaning solution. If you have a memory foam mattress, you may wish to avoid using a peroxide-based cleaning solution, and instead opt for a commercial enzyme cleaner.

What Are Some Ways I Can Prevent Urine Stains From Happening In The First Place
While any of the above solutions will clean a stained mattress, using a waterproof mattress protector or mattress pad prevents stains from happening altogether. A mattress cover makes cleaning your mattress as easy as tossing it into the washer and dryer. It provides a layer of protection that absorbs most of the liquid and keeps it from seeping into your mattress.
A waterproof mattress cover, such as a plastic protector, is also a great way to prevent stains. The stain-causing liquid is unable to penetrate the plastic barrier, keeping your mattress free from stains caused by drinks, sweat, and urine.
Accidents happen, especially with young children and puppies who are still learning the ropes. Cleaning these tiny spills and stains can get frustrating from time to time. Though with the proper methods and recipes to clean up even the most heavily stained mattress, there is no mess you cant tackle.
