Throwing Out Your Mattress
In some cases, you may not be able to donate or recycle your mattress. It may be that your mattress isnt fit for donation, or you cant find a recycling center close enough that will take it. For whatever reason, youre unable to donate, give away, recycle, or upcycle your mattress, theres always the option to throw it out.
However, it is often not as simple as just putting the mattress out on the curb. Many states, cities, and towns have specific ordinances and rules about throwing away mattresses, some of which prohibit putting a whole mattress in the trash. In those places, a curbed mattress may not be picked up on garbage day, and may result in a ticket or a fine.
The rules regarding garbage disposal vary, and you can find the rules for your state and city with a quick Google search. If you live in an area where you can, in fact, throw out a mattress with your regular trash, make sure to carefully read any additional rules to avoid fines and/or pickup refusal. In most places, you will be required to wrap your mattress in plastic, and in some places, you will be required to wrap the mattress in a specially made plastic mattress bag. To be safe, cover your mattress in plastic and seal it shut with packing tape.

For example, in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island, the Mattress Recycling Council runs a mattress recycling program called , and statewide laws allow households to drop off old mattresses and box springs at collection sites free of charge .
You can also use ByeByeMattress or other search engines like Earth911 to locate a mattress recycling spot.This interactive mapreveals over 100 mattress recycling centers nationwide.
Some cities offer full-service recycling centers where you can drop off almost anything. If you have more than just a mattress to drop off, or the mattress is too large for you to bring in, you may be able to arrange for pickup from your home — some city and county governments will pick up bulky items curbside upon request, although these may or may not be part of a recycling program.
City recycling programs may charge a fee for dropping off mattresses or box springs. You may or may not need to make an appointment to drop off your mattress.

- Large items such as couches, sofa beds , mattresses and other furniture can be placed at the curb on your scheduled garbage collection day. Maximum 2 cubic metres per collection which is roughly equivalent to one piece of large furniture such as a couch or two pieces of smaller furniture such as chairs and mattresses.
- If furniture or mattresses are soiled or suspected to have bed bugs, the item must be wrapped and sealed tightly in a plastic mattress bag. Mattress bags are available for purchase at most self-storage locations.
- Carpet must be cut to 1 meter lengths, rolled and tied in bundles.
- Propane tanks, appliances, tires, compact fluorescent light bulbs & tubes, televisions, computer monitors and other electronics are not collected at the curb.

Recycling Fridges And Freezers
This CFC refrigerant gas removal program has reopened with service appointments available as of October 1, 2020. The municipality offers this service for free to properties eligible for curbside collection.
Refrigerant gases must be removed by a qualified technician before the appliance is collected for recycling. This service does not include removal of refrigerants in heat pumps, swimming pool heat pumps, or furnace units.
Call 3-1-1 or request CFC removal online. It will take up to 10 business days for the technician to visit your property. Once the service is complete, a sticker is attached and the appliance can be placed out on your regular garbage collection day. Doors may be removed for safety.
Heat pumps are not eligible for this program due to their size but may be placed curbside after gases are removed by a refrigeration company.

Where Can I Get Yellow Bags
The yellow bags are available at participating Home Hardware retailers and a BMR. Here are the Home Hardware retailers and a BMR where you can purchase your Yellow Bags:

Fall Yard Waste Collection Extended
In recognition of the late fall weather in Richmond Hill this year, the City has added one more week of yard waste collection to the schedule. The final yard waste collection of 2021 will now take place the week of December 14 on your regular waste collection day.
Please note, as the original yard waste collection schedule ended the week of November 30, there will be no yard waste collection the week of December 7.

Your waste management company will likely not pick up a mattress you leave on the curb with the rest of your trash. Its a bulky, heavy item that requires more than one person to lift into the truck, taking more manpower and space.
