How Often Should You Wash Your Mattress Protector And Why

How to Launder a Mattress Protector

To keep your sleep healthy and your mattress fresh, you will need to make sure your mattress protector is cleaned frequently. On average, every two to four weeks should be enough, but if you tend to sweat a lot at night, or youre unwell, you should wash your mattress protector more frequently.

Washing your mattress protector often helps kill the bacteria, dust mites and bugs that accumulate on bedding. It also helps to prevent them from reaching your mattress, keeping that in better condition for longer.

While these bed-dwelling nasties are just a fact of life, regularly washing your bedding goes a long way to keep them at bay. If you suffer from allergies its particularly important to zap dust mites, as they can worsen allergy symptoms such as coughing, sneezing and itchy skin.

What Not To Do When Cleaning A Mattress Topper Made From Wool

  • Dont use a beater Its true that people used to beat rugs and blankets to get the dust out of them. The jury is out on whether this worked anyway, but with a wool mattress pad beating is an absolute no-no. Heavy beating will break up the delicate fibers and your comfortable pad will end up lumpy and bumpy.
  • Dont submerge in water Getting a wool mattress pad completely sodden will not do the internal fibers any favors youll end up with clumps. A damp sponge should be good enough to remove stains.
  • Dont steam clean While steam cleaners are known for their antibacterial properties, they are not designed for fabric. The excess moisture will cause the wool to clump, and as wool itself is naturally antibacterial, this kind of heavy-duty cleaning is not necessary.

How To Wash Mattress Toppers

So, can mattress toppers be washed, and how do you wash them? We have already answered the first part of that question: they can be washed. As to how it depends on why you need to wash them.

Maintenance Cleaning: Mattress toppers need regular maintenance cleaning, even if just an occasional vacuum. Your body sheds around 30,000 50,000 skin cells every hour. In a year, you will shed about 8 pounds of skin cells. If you spend 8 hours in bed, then a third of this will be deposited on your mattress or mattress topper every night.

Not only that, but there are likely billions of dust mites in your mattress small mites that dont bite you, but eat your skin cells! They can also lead to allergies and can present a distinct risk to the health of anybody who is allergic to them.

Always read the label for washing instructions. This video shows how to wash a fiber or cotton mattress topper:

Not all mattress toppers can be washed in this way. Memory foams should not be put into a washing machine, and cannot be soaked with water. Can You Wash A Mattress Topper

We know how life works. Spills and stains along with general use over time can lead most things, including your mattress topper, to getting a little dirty. So, how do you clean it properly? There’s four key factors to consider before washing your mattress topper. Read on to find out exactly what they are.

How To Clean A Down Mattress Pad

Can You Wash Foam Mattress Pads?

As with all mattress pads, follow instructions on the manufacturer’s care label for cleaning.

For machine-washable down mattress pads, it is preferable to use a front-loading washer because they are made to handle large loads and do not use an agitator to clean.

Before washing, remember to check both sides of the pad to make sure there are no open seams or tears in the fabric. The last thing you need is a washer filled with feathers, Reichert points out.

Next, pre-treat stains by rubbing them with a bit of detergent or down cleaner. Allow the solution to soak in for 15-20 minutes before washing. Use the delicate cycle with cool water and a small amount of gentle, low-sudsing detergent or a special down cleaner. Rinse twice to remove all detergent residue from the feathers.

Dry on the lowest heat never on high. To keep feathers fluffed, toss in a few wool, rubber dryer balls or tennis balls. Every 15 minutes or so, remove the pad from the dryer and, using your hands, break up and fluff the clumps of feathers. This will help the down dry evenly. Damp feathers will absorb odors and mildew, so continue drying until no trace of moisture remains.

    Always Check The Label First

Ive said it several times in this article already, but the most important thing to do is to check the care label, instructions, or warranty for your mattress or separately bought mattress cover/protector to find out if it can be washed, and the strategy for doing so.

And I would avoid attempting to wash or spot clean any mattress cover where you cannot find the exact instructions for doing so because you may be at risk of damaging the cover and/or voiding the warranty in the case of a native mattress cover.

The same goes for non-removable native mattress covers using spot cleaning strategies for when you absolutely must remove a substance like blood or urine.

Removable native mattress covers can often be machine washed, hand washed, or dry cleaned but you absolutely MUST check the instructions first to ensure that your mattress cover really can be removed .

And finally, separately bought waterproof, vinyl, polypropylene, and polyester mattress covers/protectors can often be machine washed but be sure to check the label for the exact strategy, temperatures, and drying guidelines.

    • Did you know that most mattress warranties are void if there are ANY stains on the mattress? A good quality mattress pad/protector will not only keep your mattress clean, it will keep the warranty valid.
    • If your mattress pad cannot be washed, then you will need to spot clean it or consider steam cleaning it with an upholstery or clothing steamer.
    • If the mattress pad becomes twisted due to the elastic corners, this can prevent it from drying fully in the dryer. Be sure to untwist it before putting it in the dryer, and if needed, check the dryer half-way through to ensure it has not become twisted again.

    Using A Detergent To Clean

Similar to the spot cleaning, if you need to wash your entire mattress topper, you will want to follow the instructions for spot cleaning. The easiest way to accomplish this task is to put your cleaning solution into a spray bottle and lightly spray the mattress.

You do not want to soak the mattress topper, because then it will take longer to rinse and dry.

Also, to make it a less daunting task, split your mattress into sections such as quarters and work on cleaning each section before moving onto the next.

Since you now have the entire foam mattress wet or damp, you will need to allow it to dry for a few days. Using forced air such as a blow dryer can ruin its shape and damage the foam. It is best to put it in a well-ventilated area to dry.

Flip it onto the other side multiple times a day if it is soaked all the way through.

How To Get Stains Out Of A Mattress Topper

If there are stains already set on your topper, you may need a different cleaning approach. Heres how to remove stains:

  • Choose a cleaning solution .
  • Apply a small amount of solution to a clean cloth.
  • Gently blot the stained area with the solution-soaked cloth.
  • Use a separate cloth, dipped in cold water, to blot the stained area.
  • Repeat as needed.
  • Apply baking soda, letting it sit for at least 8 hours to draw out moisture.
  • Vacuum the mattress surface and air-dry.
  • There are a few different cleaning solutions you can use to remove stains from mattress protectors:

Enzyme Cleaner Commercial enzyme cleaners are effective, particularly for biological stains such as those caused by blood, sweat, and urine. Enzyme cleaners can be found in most grocery stores, near the laundry detergent.

Dish Soap Using a small amount of dish soap mixed with water can also be effective. Get the mixture sudsy, and use only the foam that forms on top to clean the topper.

Vinegar White vinegar, diluted 1:1 with water, is also effective at removing some stains.

Hydrogen Peroxide Very difficult stains, such as blood, may respond better to a diluted mixture hydrogen peroxide and water . However, keep in mind that peroxide can bleach or damage memory foam, so use it sparingly, and only when other options have failed.

In some cases, you may need to try a few different cleaning solutions in order to remove tough stains.
