Do I Need A Box Spring With A Casper Mattress

Testing The Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress In Different Sleeping Positions

Do You Need A Box Spring?

The feel of a mattress can be somewhat subjective, because we all experience things differently. What position you primarily sleep in, as well as your body type, can really change how a mattress will feel to you. Heres how I expect the Nova Hybrid will feel to different sleepers.

Is the Casper Nova Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers ?

  • Light Back SleepersI think light back sleepers will definitely enjoy the Nova Hybrid. Being lighter, you may experience the bed as more medium-firm than I did, but either way, it should give back sleepers great alignment. The Zoned Support will also offer some extra support at the hips and extra cushioning at the shoulders.
  • Light Side Sleepers The Nova Hybrid could also work well for light side sleepers, again thanks to that Zoned Support. It also had great pressure relief when I laid on my side. Light sleepers might not get quite as much sinkage into the bed, but I think you should still be comfortable.
  • Light Stomach SleepersThis mattress is probably too soft for stomach sleepers. If you only sleep on your stomach part of the night, you might be able to get away with it, since light sleepers may experience the firmness as slightly higher than average. But for strict stomach sleepers, Id pick something a little firmer.

Is A Spring Box Necessary For A Daybed

It just depends on the design of your daybed. If you have slats with no more than 4 inches between them, a low-profile spring box will not be necessary. However, if you have a wooden panel as support, flat wood panels over the slats, link springs or metal bars instead of slats, you may need to get a spring box to ensure the mattress has enough support, especially if you have a thicker memory foam or another expensive mattress.

How Far Apart Should Bed Slats Be

Bed slats too far apart will not support the mattress correctlythis is especially true with memory foam or latex mattresses since these beds can sag between wide gaps.

Typically, it is best to keep slats no more than 2.75 inches apart. This distance will provide adequate support and keep air circulating through the bed.

Box Springs And Foundations

While a mattress foundation can look similar to a box spring with its supportive frame, its a completely different product. They provide a solid surface with wooden slats or another sturdy material. The material does not flex under the mattresss weight, with closer spaced slats providing more support. Some foundations come with detachable legs, so that you can place them in a bed frame, much like you would with a traditional box spring.

Foundations and box springs come in low, medium, and standard profiles:

  • A low profile is 5.5 inches or lower
  • A medium profile is 6 to 8.5 inches
  • A standard profile is 9 inches or more

If you purchase a split queen or a split king mattress, you may need to buy a split mattress base. Split mattresses are essentially two separate mattresses pushed together so partners can personalize their side with their favorite firmness. Split mattresses can benefit from extra support in the middle, which a standard foundation may not be able to give.

What Is The Foundation For Casper Mattress

Does a Memory Foam Mattress Need a Box Spring?

This question comes up a lot and one of the biggest selling points of the Casper mattress is the built in foundation. The high density poly foam acts as a seriously sturdy foundation. You can place this mattress virtually anywhere and be comfortable sleeping on it. Casper also sells a foundation that is a box spring but we found little to no difference in comfort whether you used it or not.

I HAVE ONE of the worlds tiniest guest bedrooms. This was not a problem during the pandemic. But with the impending return of houseguestsremember them?I realized recently that I need to transform the 85-square-foot space into a comfortable room.

The other day I was standing there, with my arms folded. Actually I was standing in the rooms doorway because there wasnt really enough room to stand in the room with my arms folded. If I put my arms straight down at my sides, I could stand in the room. But that was uncomfortable for deep thinking. And I was pondering: What would make this sad space more inviting?

My gaze naturally settled on the bed itself, which for a full-size double bed seemed huge. Hulking, even. And theneureka!I would have slapped my forehead if there were room: The biggest problem was the puffy, princess-and-the-pea box spring and mattress set.

Do I Need A Bed Frame

If you have the proper support base for your mattress, you dont necessarily need a bed frame. Headboards and footboards are mostly decorativethey dont support the bed.

If your mattress is resting on the correct foundation, that is all you need however, if you have a slatted foundation attached to your bed frame, you will not be able to separate the base from the framethe two must stay together.

For the most part, the frame is optional, but the base the mattress rests on, is not. You will need to have the right base for support and to preserve the life of your mattress.

Keeps Your Mattress Clean

The floor is typically the dirtiness spot in the housethis is where dirt, hair, dead skin cells, bugs, dust mites, pet hair and dander, and other allergens collect. Moisture and humidity also tend to gather near the floor, which can encourage mold and mildew to form in the mattress.

To ensure these things stay on the floor and not in your bed, you will need to keep your mattress lifted off the ground.

Innerspring mattresses tend to have open space between spring coils where bacteria and dirt can collect. So these beds should remain lifted off the floor.

Because latex foam and memory foam mattresses are so dense, they are more resistant to dust mites and bacteria. However, moisture can cause foam to deteriorate, so these beds should also rest on a raised platform.

Benefits And Drawbacks Of The Box Spring

Do I Need a Box Spring for my Memory Foam Mattress?

When well-designed, the traditional box spring does a good job at what it was designed to do: providing support and ventilation for innerspring mattresses. However, box springs today are not always well-designed. In fact, many of them are cheaply made and dont provide the support that a mattress needs to help you sleep comfortably, align your spine, and add longevity to your mattress.

In addition, many box springs that are sold with latex and memory foam mattresses are not designed to hold the weight of these beds over a long period of time. Since both latex and memory foam can be significantly heavier than innerspring mattress options, they should have updated box springs, too. However, some companies sell these beds with the same box springs that they sell with their innerspring models, which can create problems down the road.

Box springs also may not provide the type of support that memory foam and latex require in order to last as long as possible. Both of these types of mattresses need even support across the bottom part of the mattress. Any holes or gaps in the support raise the risk that your mattress will sag into the gap. Since many box springs have more support straight down the middle and around the edges than they do right under where you sleep, they may not offer the support your new mattress needs.

Wood Slats A High Or Low

Its true, wood foundations are amongst the best bangs for your buck in the bed foundation world!

Not convinced? When compared to a boxspring, add some extra storage space into the mix

When you add 7 inch bed legs to a KD foundation, youll instantly create additional space between the wood slats and floor. This means extra bedroom storage for odds and ends that otherwise would have cluttered up your living space. Check it out:

Because of the storage benefits, foundations made with sustainable wood are a winner for families looking to maximize available living space without splurging on a more costly platform bed. But keep in mind, for the extra space to really become a factor youll need to choose from a higher-profile bed leg like out 7 inch option.

On a structural note, take note of the gap space between each wood slat on the foundation. If youre shopping around, then this is very important. If spaces between the slate of wood are more than three inches apart, itll cause gaps that make your mattress sink. And as we discussed earlier, sinkage is bad! Make sure your wood foundation has slats that are at most three inches apart because this spacing will provide a sturdy, long-lasting infrastructure for your mattress.

Do I Really Need A Bed Frame

In all honesty, it is not good for your mattress to be on the floor and you can read more about that here. Mold will easily build up if you do not provide it with the ability to breath. Microscopic bugs have also been known to burrow deep into your mattress fairly quickly and make themselves at home. Get yourself off the ground with one of these mattress frames to prolong the value and age of your mattress.

Ii Do You Need A Box Spring

While box springs made sense for the traditional innerspring mattresses of yesteryear, mattresses have come a long wayand you also have a few more types of mattresses to choose from now, including memory foam and hybrid.

Whether you need a box spring or not will depend on your mattress and what kind of support you need. Box springs can even be damaging to some types of foam mattresses, so its important to understand what youll need.

Youll need a box spring if

  • You have an older innerspring mattress and a traditional metal-rail bed frame, both designed specifically for use with a box spring
  • Your manufacturer recommends using a box spring or requires you to do so to keep your warranty valid

On the other hand, you dont need a box spring if

  • You have a newer memory foam, latex or hybrid mattress
  • You prefer to set your mattress directly on the floor
  • You have a box spring alternative, such as an adjustable base or a solid foundation

Lets recap: does a box spring really make a difference, and do you really need one?

With all the alternatives available today, the answer is not always. As long as you have solid support under your mattress, thats whats important.

You Have A Collapsible Bed Frame

Does a Memory Foam Mattress Need a Box Spring?

Some bed frames require a box spring. If youve ever used a collapsible frame, youll understand why. If it doesnt provide enough support in the center, the mattress will sag and be uncomfortable. Any bed frame that isnt entirely solid or has a support system in the center will more often than not require a box spring.

Why Daybeds Dont Need A Box Springs:

Daybeds simply arent designed to need them. Their frames provide adequate support for a mattress while also allowing the space where the box spring would have been, to be used for storage bins or baskets and even trundle beds.

Modern mattresses provide more than enough cushioning and shock absorption on their own without the need to add a box spring for extra springiness.

Also, these same one-sided mattresses have built-in strength at the base which negates the need for a flat supportive surface under them.

As long as the supporting slats on the daybed arent spaced too far apart, there will be enough surface area to keep the mattress in tip-top shape.

Does A Daybed Need A Box Spring

No, not necessarily. If your slats are about 4 inches apart and wide enough for your weight, you dont necessarily need a spring box. However, this is only if the slats are either about 4 inches apart or have a flat panel covering them. If you have wood panels over the slats, metal bars in place or link springs, you may need to get a box spring. It all depends on the design of your daybed.

King Size Bed Foundation

76 inches by 80 inches

A king size mattress is excellent for couples who are looking for more space. Kings offer enough room to accommodate both you and your partners needs, but they do require a larger bedroom to comfortably fit. Since the standard US bedroom is 11 by 12 feet, a king bed leaves little room around the bed for movement or additional furniture. A master bedroom may be more suited for this size mattress.
