How To Get Rid Of Unpleasant Odors

Housekeeping Tips : How to Clean Tempur-Pedic Foam

There are a couple of odors that may appear on your pillow, and mostly, none are pleasant.

First, theres the off-gassing odor. Tempur Pedic pillows use synthetic material, and to arrive nice and folded, they are squished and rolled to save space and come free of defects. That usually results in unpleasant odors and smells that can dissipate within 3 to 5 days.

Other odors can include anything from a spilled drink, food, or even pet urine that happened to be on the pillow, unfortunately.

Memory foam pillows such as the Tempur Pedic pillow are known to last a long time, well past 10 years, and oftentimes even longer than 15 as you sleep on the pillow and sweat, the pillow may absorb an unpleasant smell that you want to get rid of.

Luckily, there are a couple of ways to do that:

Both materials demand nearly identical cleaning process. Youll need an empty spray bottle, that you will either fill up with vinegar or baking soda mixed with a bit of water. Spray the pillow with your homemade spray and leave it like that for a day.

After a day passes, you will either want to remove the remnants of baking soda powder from the pillow by vacuuming it or simply shake it to ensure nothing is left in it. You can also use a hairdryer, as long as you dont let it blow hot, but turn the cooling setting on.

If you use the water and vinegar mix, you can squeeze the pillow out by rolling it, shake it, or press a clean and dry towel against the pillow surface to ensure you clean it.

Can You Wash A Memory Foam Pillow

The best way to wash memory foam pillows is to perform the washing by hand. So, the answer to the question, can you wash memory foam, is yes. However, it requires a different form of cleaning than a traditional washing machine to prevent damage. Here is how to deep clean an entire memory foam pillow.

  • Gentle detergent

Before soaking your pillow, read the care label for specific cleaning directions. Fill a large tub with cold or lukewarm water since hot water tends to set-in stains. Add a couple of squirts of mild detergent and agitate the water to form suds.

To enhance the scent of your pillow, add a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the solution, which also helps you to sleep more peacefully. If you do not have a large enough container to accommodate your pillow, use a bathtub to clean it.

Remove the pillowcase and submerge the pillow in the soapy water. Squeeze the pillow in the water to allow the soapy solution to penetrate the solid memory foam. Empty the soapy solution from the tub and fill it with cold water.

Let the water run over the pillow for extra rinsing. Squeeze the pillow in the clean water to flush out soapy residue. Do this several times to allow the clean water to rinse away dirt until the water runs clear.

Remove the pillow from the tub and squeeze out the excess liquid without wringing it. Continue pressing on the foam to get as much water out as possible. Place it on a flat surface for air drying.

  • Fill up a sink or bathtub with lukewarm water and a small amount of gentle detergent. You can also add a drop of lavender oil if you enjoy the scent!
  • Slowly submerge your pillow under the soapy water. Squeeze it to allow the soapy water to penetrate beneath the surface. Repeat twice.
  • Drain soapy water and refill with clean water. Squeeze pillow several times, allowing the clean water to wash away any remaining dirt or soap until the water runs clear.
  • Gently squeeze your pillow to remove excess water, but dont twist or rigorously squeeze the foam.
  • Leave to air dry, preferably in direct sunlight or outdoors. If neither are available, leave your memory foam pillow under a ceiling fan.
  • Sprinkle with a drop of lavender oil if desired!

Never Put Memory Foam In A Washing Machine

Washing machines are memory foam’s worst enemy. You should never put memory foam pillows in a washing machine for two reasons. The first is that the washer’s spin cycle would rip apart the memory foam. The second is that submerging memory foam in water would damage it since it acts like a sponge, absorbing all the water and then crumbling into tiny pieces. A waterlogged memory foam pillow is also at a high risk of growing mold and mildew if it isn’t able to completely dry before it is used again. Dryers are also not good for memory foam pillows because the heat can melt the fluff inside.

Another thing to look out for when cleaning memory foam pillows is what type of cleansers you use on them. According to Eachnight, harsh cleansers can cause memory foam to disintegrate. Thus, ensure you never use any chemicals that have bleach in them. Instead, use a mild cleanser like dish soap or a gentle laundry detergent.

What Is Better: A Memory Foam Mattress Or A Gel Memory Foam Mattress

You must be very curious about these two and what is the real deal between them. A lot of people are thinking of what is better between the two.

Both can be the right choice when looking for a mattress that could resist pressure upon laying down in it.

Both works for the said to set up.

But then again, remember that the material used on these two is primarily similar except for a few added gel memory foam mattresses.

When it comes to sturdiness, quality, and strength, both will work correctly. Both mattresses are on the same page in this, and no one gets better from the other.

That would only differ from the producers. Different companies maintain different standards, and you have to understand that.

Talking about comfort and the feeling, one would bring home the bacon.

These two could give convenience when you are lying down.

On the other side, a gel memory foam mattress can give you a better feeling and a more comfortable experience. It comes with one particular component.

It is unique to have cooling gel beads that give off a cooling effect when you lay down. It also helps when the temperature gets high.

You know that a mattress gets warm when the temperature is. And too thick a mattress could make you feel a little warmer than the thicker ones.

But then, having those cooling gels infused into its gel memory foam mattress is way ahead of its competitor.

Regardless, it would still be up to you.

What If My Memory Foam Pillow Smells

If your memory foam pillow is not new, but you notice an odor after a period of time, you may need to deodorize your pillow. To deodorize your memory foam pillow, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit for one hour. To remove, use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum to lift away hair and dust.

If you just purchased a new memory foam pillow, you may notice a slight odor after removing it from the package, this is called off-gassing. To let your pillow “air out” before sleeping on it, place it in a well-ventilated area or outside for up to twenty-four hours.
