Construction And Materials Comparison

How to Assemble Sleep Number C4 bed

The construction of a mattress is of central importance to its feel, performance, and durability. The construction includes both the design of its layers and the actual materials used in those layers.

In general, a mattress can be understood as having two main sections:

  • The comfort system is the top part and offers the most immediate effect on feel. It is normally made of polyfoam, memory foam, latex, wool, cotton, and/or polyester.
  • The support core is the bottom part of the mattress. It affects the mattress feel and the performance of the comfort system. The support core also helps prevent against excessive sagging in the mattress. It can be made with polyfoam, latex, innerspring coils, or air chambers.

Both the comfort system and support core can be made up of one or more layers that can be the same or different materials. Quality components in each and every layer will help protect against a weak link that drags down the overall mattress performance.

The following sections give an overview of the construction and materials in the Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number beds. While we know the basics about what goes into them, neither company discloses all the specifications of their mattresses, which can at times make it difficult to fully compare their models.

Top Advantages Of Sex On An Airbed

1. SUPPORTIVE. With proper adjustment, airbeds can offer a high degree of support which can make it easy to move on the beds and change positions.

2. COMFORTABLE. The beds often to an above-average extent provide enough cushion so that knees, butt, elbows, hands, etc. dont get uncomfortable from pressure. This may allow a person to stay in certain positions longer without fatigue or discomfort.

3. CLEANUP. In the case of fluid penetration, staining or soiling, the top comfort layer can often be removed. This allows for it to be thoroughly cleaned, replaced or flipped. Also, fluids and soiling cannot penetrate the air chambers.

Secure The Corner Lock Mechanism In Place

While queen-sized beds have notched side walls, most double beds have a corner locking system. Simply put, these are adjacent mating side panels and end panels placed on the bottom of the mattress cover that forms its corners and keeps its walls stable. When doing a Sleep Number bed setup for a double bed, it is important to secure these in place before you can fit the foam and air chambers inside the mattress.

Whats A Sleep Number Bed

If you havent had an opportunity to try a Sleep Number bed, then youre missing out. I like the customizable innovation that comes with this bed.

A Sleep Number bed contains two separate air mattresses. Each air mattress is adjustable so that each sleeper can set the firmness level to the perfect number for them.

This means getting a better nights sleep, every night for most people.

Sleep Number offers several lines of mattresses. The first is the Classic Series, which includes dual adjustability and the companys proprietary Responsive Air technology.

I love the Responsive Air technology because I can be a restless sleeper. This technology senses every time that the sleeper moves and makes subtle adjustments to ensure proper alignment, no matter what position you find yourself in.

The Classic Series is equipped with SleepIQ technology that shows you the quality level of your sleep. With this data, you can make adjustments to your firmness level to get better sleep the following night. This is an awesome feature.

The Classic Series is attractive because of its affordable pricing. However, you may want to upgrade to the Performance Series if you need improved pressure relief.

Upgrade to an Innovation Series Mattress, and you get all of the features of the Performance Series plus a temperature-balancing sleep surface. This series is for those of you who get overheated while sleeping.

Sizing And Weight Options

A heavier mattress will be more difficult to move, which is a factor for people who expect to relocate with any frequency. The height of a mattress can affect how well your sheets fit as well as how easily you can get in or out of bed, which is a primary concern for people with knee, hip, or back pain.

Choosing the right mattress size has a direct impact on your comfort in bed, the space in your bedroom, and the total price youll pay. Most mattresses are available in the six standard sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king but there are exceptions within the Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number product lines. Some models are not offered in smaller sizes, and more specialized non-standard options are available for many mattresses.

What The Numbers Mean

Sleep Number is all about beds, but in case it wasnt obvious, theyre also all about numbers.

A persons Sleep Number number corresponds to the individuals ideal firmness and support.Numbers range from 0 to 100 and the higher the number, the more air/firmer the feel of the Sleep Number bed will be.

Likewise, the lower the Sleep Number, the less air will be in the air chamber and the softer the bed will be.

Sleep Numbers are super personal and can change. If an individual determines what he or she thinks his or her setting is in the store and go home and dont like it, there is no reason the person cant adjust the number till he or she finds a good fit.

Can Movers Move A Sleep Number Bed

Sleep Number bed Mattress Assembly : How To video

Movers can transport a sleep number bed. Initially, follow the procedures in disassembling a number bed, which includes taking down the frame and header. Place the parts and tools in a bag and tape it to the beds larger frame to keep it from getting lost during transport.

Remember to secure the Firmness Control System, Sleep Number Remote, and instructions. Packed these components in a box, and arrange their transportation to minimize shock and vibration.

The advantage of using a moving company is that they can move the mattress assembled and in a mattress box. This means you can leave the mattress fully inflated and capped off. The closure caps are necessary for moving a fully inflated mattress, specifically to avoid third-party charges.

The Most Popular Sleep Number

The most popular Sleep Number is in the 35-40 range. When I asked a representative why this is range is so popular, I was told: Sleep Number is really based on personal preference and what is most comfortable for each person, the 35-45 range gives great support and pressure relief for most.

Sleep Number also told us that, in terms of models, some common options are the C2 for the price point, P5 for the best value, and I8 for best comfort and the added cooling.

The movement of the base also provides a special zero-gravity feel, as if youre weightlessly floating versus being abruptly moved. Lastly, you can set a timer so the bed automatically returns to your favorite sleeping position at a certain point in the morning or night.

These start at $1,499.99 and go up to $2,999.99 for a King.

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series

Sleep Number Mattress Reviews (2021): All Models Compared

The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.

Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.

I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.

The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.

Split Queen Vs Queen Adjustable Beds

A standard queen size adjustable mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A typical split queen adjustable bed uses two 30-inch by 80-inch mattresses to achieve the same surface area as a regular queen size bed. With a split queen, each mattress can be adjusted independently.

While luxury features are available for both split queen and queen adjustable beds, models may vary in terms of specific features.

Sleep Number 360 I8 Smart Mattress

The Innovation 360 Smart Bed i8 has a 6 comfort layer with two different types of foam for support and pressure relief. There is also a special material in the surface of the mattress that releases heat so the mattress keeps its cool.

The i8 and the iLE have the same, deep 6-inch comfort layer. The comfort layer in the i10 is 7 inches thick. Overall, these are the plushest mattresses in the entire brand.

Can You Put A Sleep Number Bed On A Regular Bed Frame

In addition, Sleep Number mattresses are available in all conventional industry mattress sizes and may be used with traditional frames and furniture sets, if desired. FlexFit adjustable bases can be used as a stand-alone unit or can be integrated into an independent bed frame. It is always adjustable on both sides, allowing you to sleep comfortably on any side.

Set Up The Firmness Control System

Assemble Sleep Number 360® Smart Mattress & FlexFit Adjustable Base

Before setting up the Firmness Control System and connecting it to the air chambers, ensure that it is located correctly inside or outside your bed base. For elevated bases or bases with legs, it should sit inside the first section of the base. For bases sitting on the floor, the system should be outside the base at the head of your bed. As a precautionary measure, you should plug the Firmness Control System into a surge protector this is to guarantee that your air control unit and electronics are protected from damage from a power surge or a lightning strike.

TIP: The manufacturers recommendation is to use a surge protector listed to UL® 1449 with a clamping voltage of 330 volts and a joule rating of 700 or higher. Similarly, note that the Sleep Number bed 20-year Limited Warranty does not cover damage to the Firmness Control System caused by a power surge, regardless of the source.

Pros And Cons Of Split King Beds

Pros:

  • You can still sleep next to your partner, but without having to compromise comfort
  • Ideal for people who have different mattress preferences than their partner
  • Less likely to be disturbed than with a regular king
  • Easier to move than a regular king bed because you can split them apart

What We Think About Sleep Number Mattresses

In general, we think you can get a more comfortable mattress for a lot less. But if you insist on Sleep Numbers adjustability because you and your partner cant compromise on a firmness level, and you have a flexible budget, we think only the Performance Series and Innovation Series mattresses and the Cooling Memory Foam mattress are worth considering. The less expensive Classic Series mattresses and the Value Bed lines are just too thin for most people. If you like a plush mattress with good support, then you should spend more for the Innovation Series beds, which have thicker cushioning.

Beyond SleepIQ, Sleep Numbers marketing also touts technology that claims to help you fall asleep faster with a foot-warming feature. You can also theoretically control your partners snoring by raising the upper portion of their side of the bed. However, these features are available only with the companys adjustable bases , which cost between $1,200 and $2,400 for a queen.

Heres how the mattresses themselves compare to one another:

Ensure Proper Bed Support

As mentioned above, you do need the proper support for your Sleep Number Bed. If you have purchased a bunkie board, make sure it is set correctly. If you have a base from the company, you will see that these come together simply with the rails snapping easily together. You may need a screwdriver to ensure the legs are on tightly, and if you have a smart base, you will have to plug it in as well.

Place The Foam Walls And Base Pad

Slideshow of my Sleep Number P5 split king with FlexFit 2 ...

With your mattress top open, begin building the structure of your bed. First, make sure the notches or corner lock mechanism located at the ends of each wall face inwards, as they help give shape to and complete the rest of the wall support. Next, start with placing the long foam sidewalls along each side of the bed, followed by the end walls. Once the side and end walls are secured in place, lay the base pad flat in the middle part of the mattress.

To prevent any foam from folding, shake the base pad out before laying it into the bottom of the mattress cover. If it is dual-sided a textured side and a smooth side then make sure the smooth side faces downwards and the smooth side upwards. Also, do not forget to place the air chambers on top later on, with both hose connections facing the head of the bed. With these three parts placed properly, you will now have full access to the inside of the case, which will allow you to begin layering the bed and installing air technology.
