How To Off Gas Mattress

The White Sock Approach

Off Gassing

It is called the white sock treatment because it entails jumping on the mattress to release gases. This is an efficient and faster way to release gases. However, you should ensure that you do not stay in the room for long so that you do not inhale these harmful gases. Also, you should ensure that this treatment can be given to your mattress.

Reduce The Chemical Smell

To cut down the smell which is going to increase through the place you live in, the ideal thing you should do is by locating the mattress on a wall near to a few windows. You will be able to create air circulation by opening them, which will drag out the VOCs and the combined smell.

It is not a sensible decision to use air freshener to hide the odor, as it also releases VOCs. Instead, you can light a few candles around the home to get rid of much of the scent without putting your house in danger.

How Do I Minimise The Initial Off

One way to reduce any concerns would be to open your new mattress in a garage or ventilated conservatory and leave it for a couple of days if you want to ensure that the off-gassing does not happen in the bedroom. The downside is any machine rolled mattresses will now have expanded to their original side. Memory foam mattresses are quite heavy and awkward to move once unwrapped.

How Do I Get Rid Of This Smell Now

Unfortunately, the only way to guarantee a new mattress won’t stink is to buy either 1) an organic memory foam mattress or 2) a non-memory foam mattress.

Given that you’re likely reading this article after buying a bed, this isn’t much of a solution. However, there are several steps you can take that can reduce the odor:

  • Move quickly: Make sure you open up your mattress as soon as possible, the smell will only build up if it’s left wrapped up.
  • Take things outside: If it’s possible, let your mattress air out, outside, preferably for two days for more. If not, do this in a well ventilated room.
  • Get air circulating ASAP: Open windows near your bed and around the room, and open bedroom doors. Try to aim a fan near the door towards a window, so you can get a cross breeze going.
  • Give it the white sock treatment: Grab a willing friend or two, put on some socks and jump around on the bed. Seriously. Go over as much of the bed as you can, stomping as you go to push out more air.

Again, all of these steps are much more impactful if you do them sooner rather than later!

How Long For Mattress Vocs To Offgas

How To Speed Up Mattress Off

In a previous blog post, I established that Casper and Tuft & Needle foam mattress VOCs were very high in the packaging and that they should be opened outdoors. For good measure, I tested yet another manufacturers product Nest Beddings Love Bed. I got the same results as with the other manufacturers:

What do all these videos prove? They demonstrate that foam mattresses shipped straight to your home should be opened outdoors and allowed to air out. But that begs the question, For how long should they air out?

To test that question, I did a backyard experiment after testing the Nest Bedding mattress. I pressed my VOC measuring device right up against the mattress. The video below shows what happened over the next 24 hours:

So as you can see in the video above, its important to not only open your mattress outdoors, but let it air out also. The vast majority of VOC emission occurs in the first hour, and drops considerably after a day. The mattress will continue to off gas at a much lower rate for an unknown amount of time, which is true of all furniture, finishes and building materials.

For a frame of reference, I let my foam mattresses air out for 2 days before bringing them indoors. Once inside, I kept the windows open in the bedroom for a week as weather allowed. If you are chemically sensitive, consider letting your foam mattress air out for even longer .

How To Avoid Off

If you buy a memory foam or polyfoam mattress, some amount of off-gassing is going to occur from your new mattress.

Some of the chemicals that are disbursed by memory foam mattresses are classified as carcinogens, or potential carcinogens. Mattress adhesives and memory foam usually contain solvents like acetone, which can irritate your eyes and respiratory tract, or trigger asthma symptoms.

However, not all mattresses off-gas. If your mattress is made from 100 percent natural latex with nothing added, you save yourself the trouble of worrying about off-gassing at all. That is because natural, organic latex with no added fillers has no VOCs to off-gas.

Who Should Care About Off

Off-gassing smells are unpleasant for most sleepers, but they may be more problematic for some than for others. If youre especially sensitive to scents, a bed with strong off-gassing odors may cause unwanted symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness. Individuals with respiratory issues, such as asthma or allergies, could also experience irritation of the airway and difficulty breathing.

However, off-gassing may not be a concern for those who dont mind the smell or who have the time and space to allow the mattress to air out before use.

Is The Situation With Leading Brands Better

The off-gassing situation with leading brands is better because they contain little to no trace of VOCs in them and takes only hours for the off-gassing process to be completed, unlike memory foam that takes two weeks.

Casper foam offers three different types of mattresses: the Caper, the Wave, and the Essential. These three mattresses consist of layers of memory foam, polyurethane, and a layer of natural latex. All three mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified. Casper mattress off-gassing takes 24 hours or less for the odor to dissipate. This makes it an advantage over other brands.

Purple mattresses, on the other hand, consists of an elastic polymer grid placed over the CertiPUR-US certified polyurethane foam. Purple mattress odor fades very quickly and, in some cases, has no report of off-gassing.

If you are, however planning to purchase a new mattress or are still in a dilemma of what mattress to pick over a wide range of choices, you should consider opting for latex mattresses. Most latex mattresses do not smell, especially latex mattresses like Sunrising Bedding. You should put these in mind when planning to purchase a mattress.

    How Dangerous Is Off

Exposure to VOCs from products like paint and household cleaners is pretty common. That’s why items like air fresheners, glass cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and nail polish remover come with warnings about experiencing dizziness, throat irritation, headache, nausea, eye and skin irritation, or other symptoms when using them.

Thankfully, the compounds coming from mattresses have a shallow toxicity profile. So while you may experience a few side effects like eye and nose irritation from the fumes for a few weeks, they will go away as soon as the VOCs have been released completely. Again, that’s why it’s smart to circulate outdoor air or use a purifier in those first weeks . When it comes to organic mattresses you may also notice a smell, as organic latex is close to the source and can still omit gassing, even though it is not toxic.

What Are The Potential Health Risks To Off Gassing

Many individuals consider their bed safe however, research suggests the heat from your body may trigger your mattress to release potentially harmful chemicals.

Mattresses can release tiny amounts of volatile organic compounds , which are gaseous chemicals. These VOCs come primarily from the polyurethane in the mattress. However, they can also come from other types of chemicals used in plastics and flame retardants, too. And, the heat from your body seems to unfortunately increase mattress VOC emissions.

VOC exposure might worsen symptoms in individuals with asthma, hypersensitivities, seniors, and children.

Short-term effects from VOC exposure may include:

    • Dizziness

Long-term effects from VOC exposure may include an increased risk of:

    • Central nervous system damage
    • Kidney deterioration
    • Liver illness

Many individuals suffer from Environmental sensitivities. Mattresses that are organic, non-blended, and don’t off gas are the best option for people with multiple chemical sensitivities.

    Air Bed Or Air Mattress

Air beds use vinyl or polyurethane bladders in place of innerspring or foam cores. Polyurethane foam encases the air bladders for protection and comfort. It would be possible to make an airbed with comfort layers of wool, latex, or cotton as that would eliminate much off-gassing potential, although the vinyl bladder would still off-gas but were unaware of any company producing such a mattress.

Nectar Mattress Is Superior To Casper Mattress

Nectar and Casper mattresses are both foam mattresses. Both use memory foam but where Casper mattress has one layer of memory foam and one layer of poly foam, Nectar mattress has two layers of memory foam. Casper mattress has four layers while Nectar mattress has five layers. Casper mattress is thinner than Nectar mattress by one and a half inches. Nectar mattress allows your body to sink a bit more than Casper mattress, which is preferred by many as the bodyweight gets distributed all the more evenly and weightlessness is more than just a perception. While both mattresses can isolate motion and are durable, Nectar mattress is considerably cheaper. A queen size Nectar mattress will cost you $795 and that is without any discount. You can easily find a coupon or some discount that will bring down the price by more than $100. Considering the differences, Nectar mattress is clearly superior and it is what you should consider.

Does A Natural Memory Foam Bed Exist

Another question we often get asked is about Natural memory foam and some dubious bed retailers claiming to use it. To be clear memory foam is an entirely synthetic man-made chemical-based foam. There is no natural memory foam.

The only true natural foam is 100% Natural Latex. Latex mattresses have a similar sinking feeling to memory foam but are dont contain the mass of chemicals that memory foam does. Latex mattresses are also far more breathable, cooler to sleep on and faster to respond when you need to turn during the night. They are also 2 sided meaning you can use both sides of your mattress and therefore get twice as much use out of it!

    Go Natural Where Possible

The SECRET on How To Choose A “Natural / Organic” Latex Mattress

We know getting rid of the things in your house that release chemicals and VOCs is much easier said than done. In fact, entirely eliminating them might be nearly impossible in this day and age!

The silver lining in this gray cloud is that there are steps you can take toward a more natural, chemical-free home. We cant get into all the possible ways to do this , so here are a couple to get you started.

    • Consider buying non-toxic, low VOC paint
    • Exchange traditional cleaning products for more natural options like baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice
    • Choose mattresses that are free from certain harmful chemicals and considered safe

    Natural Cleaning Products

Think about how many times per week you grab your favorite cleaner and get to scrubbing. Now think about whats in your favorite cleaner. If you take a look at the ingredients list, you will probably notice some toxic ingredients.

Great things to look for are non-toxic, biodegradable, phthalate-free, and fragrance-free. Many manufacturers market their products solely based on the fragrance.

Were not just talking about cleaners, either. Make-up products, colognes and perfumes, air fresheners, and candles are just a few examples of products that are marketed for their smell.

Now, we know you cant go all natural with a lot of these products mentioned above, but you can find alternative solutions, like making your own household cleaner. Do a little research on how to make your own, or just use what you have around the house.

    What Is Mattress Off

At its most basic level, off-gassing is the process in which volatile organic compounds are released from a product into the air in your home. The most common culprits for off-gassing are synthetic and petroleum-based products, including carpets, furniture, and you guessed it mattresses.

If youre not familiar with the technical jargon, volatile means that a substance can very easily become a gas, and organic means that substance is carbon-based and the first of the two is what causes off-gassing.

When youve bought a wrapped product, upon opening the package youve likely smelled a certain chemical smell. Thats the product off-gassing, releasing vapors into the air. Predictably the effect is strongest right after the packaging is removed, but certain items can take weeks, months, or even years to off-gas entirely.

VOCs come in many forms, including chemicals like benzene, acetone, formaldehyde and ethanol, and although many VOCs are indispensable during the manufacturing process of mattresses, its not ideal to have them evaporating into the air you breathe at home every day.

Synthetic memory foam is one such material that off-gasses, and many buyers complain of an odd scent shortly after unwrapping even the best mattress in a box options.

Where Does The Smell Of Chemicals Come From

There are many chemicals inside a mattress that cause the foam mattresses gassing process.

Mattresses must be fire retardant. The fabrics and materials they are made of may contain a coat made of VOCs.

These gases, known as volatile organic compounds , have different properties.

Since these chemicals contain bromine, theyre often called brominated fire retardants .

Most of them will mattress off gas within the first week.

Some specialists say that residual VOCs will continue to off gas for years. Then, as a cumulative effect, they assume it might be harmful to our health over long-term exposure.

Memory foam mattresses are made with polyurethane. While polyurethane is just mildly toxic for peoples health, chlorofluorocarbons are a byproduct from the manufacturing process, affecting the environment.

    Polyurethane foam is one thing.

But foam mattresses may contain other VOCs as well.

These chemicals include toluene, xylene, styrene, siloxanes, methylene chloride, dichlorobenzene, phthalates, etc.

    What about organic mattresses?

Organic mattresses are much more expensive than regular mattresses.

We would love everyone to have one, but only some can afford it.

However, it may be a good investment for your overall health if you have asthma or a baby at home.

Yet, even if you can purchase only a regular mattress, dont worry about VOCs.

There is no actual evidence that VOCs in mattresses pose any severe danger.

Get as much of the VOCs out as possible after you get it home.
