2016 could be dubbed the year of the online mattress. Even though they didnt all launch this year, the bed in a box type mattresses such as Purple, Leesa, Casper, Tuft & Needle and Ghostbed are growing in popularity.

The Launch of Purple Mattress: Fall 2015

The mattress in a box niche started to take off around2013. Thats also when Purple mattress invented a machine that could create and mold large pieces of Hyper-Elastic Polymer into a king-sized mattress. This was new and it made it possible to create a mattress, roll it into a holder and mail it. It also made the price drop and that led to huge growth in online mattress sales.

Heres the stuff they call a hyper elastic polymer that takes up the first 1.5 inches of a Purple mattress. Its stretchy and bouncy on its own. On top of a mattress this is like a shock absorber. Great for not waking up the person sleeping next to you if youre getting out of bed or tossing/turning. It also means youre not sleeping on a solid state . This mattress isnt soft, but its not firm either. Its more middle firm.

The NEW Purples are a blend between their Unique HEP and an innerspring mattress. They added 7.5 coils and gave consumers the choice of how large of a hyper-elastic polymer section that they desire. The Purple Hybrid Premier comes in 2 options. You can choose a 3 inch HEP layer of a 4 inch one.

How much of the HEP do you want to sleep on?

You dont have to go all the way up to the Purple 4, you could get the polymer section down to a 3 or 2 section. Here is the CRAZY part the 4 polymer section costs a full $1,200 more than the 2 polymer section . The polymer section is what the Purple is all about, so I do get why they would double down on it to provide the option to get all the way to 4. I wonder if they have considered additional thickness on their original mattress as well?

Besides the choice that you now have for the polymer section, the new purple mattress now has individually wrapped 7.5 coils. This will provide sleepers with the additional support that some fell that the original purple may not provide. I feel like the Raw Egg Test video had a section about how coils werent good, so I went and watched the video. How much egg is on my face? I was wrong there is no mention of coils being bad in that video. Meaning, this expansion into the hybrid world may have been planned for the last couple of years.

The original is set on two high-quality layers of polyurethane foam and the New Purple Mattress is set on individually-encased Responsive Support Coils.

In the same vain, too much firmness also isnt good for stomach sleepers, who need a combination of support and cushion for the best nights sleep. This sleeping position already twists the neck to a harsh angle, so too much firmness can cause the neck and spine to arc beyond their natural curve.

While no mattress is perfect for stomach, back, and side sleepers alike, a medium-firm bed with a cushioned top is the best mattress option for stomach sleepers.

A heavily cushioned mattress protector can also offer extra softness and act as a barrier to the unique feel of the polymer material grid. If youre not willing to try the Purple mattress, memory-foam mattresses are good options for stomach sleepers. But how do you care for the cover?

According to Purples website, you should spot clean the cover without removing it. Its advisable to use mild detergent and lukewarm water, but you should only hand clean. Dont machine wash or dry the cover on the Purple mattress.

Purple Mattress Pain Relief Performance

How well a mattress alleviates pain depends on whether or not it can relieve pressure, especially at sensitive pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and lower back.

To measure pressure relief, I used a handy pressure mat. I placed the mat on top of the mattress and climbed aboard. The mat created a map of how much pressure my body exerted on the mattress in different positions. The map turns blue to green for low pressure, and yellow to red for high pressure. Youll see those graphics below.

Back Pain I think this is a nice mattress for back pain. The map is all blue at my back in each position, which shows theres low pressure there. However, if firm beds have been better for your back pain in the past, I might opt for a slightly firmer mattress than this Purple.

Shoulder Pain I like the Purple for shoulder pain. The grid offers some great pressure relief and should cradle sore shoulders well.

Hip Pain I also like the Purple for hip pain. Again, that grid layer does a great job cradling the body. However, if youre a side sleeper with severe hip pain, Id go for a softer mattress that will give you even more pressure relief.
