Standard Box Springs Split Box Springs And Kd Kits

A standard box spring comes as one piece thats the same size as your mattress, be that a twin, full, queen, or king. Box springs cannot be bent or folded, so you will need a good amount of space to maneuver it through doorways and up stairs.

A split box spring comes in two halves. If you live in tight quarters, you might appreciate having a split box spring as you attempt to maneuver your purchase through your doorway or up the stairs. But a split box frame puts extra weight on the center of the bed, so youll need to be sure your bed frame can support it before making a purchase. Split box springs cost slightly more than standard box springs. As mentioned above, a knock down kit is a box spring kit that can be assembled in the bedroom. As such, it is easier to maneuver through the home. KD kits can be purchased and shipped directly to your home.

A low-rise bed frame can also reduce the overall height of your mattress surface. In addition, most stores also offer low-profile frames, which also reduce overall height.

Queen Size Mattress Weight

The queen-size mattress is the most common mattress type. It can comfortably fit two people or a single person-if you love space. Click here for the best queen-size mattresses. So, how much does a queen-size mattress weigh?

  • It mostly weighs between 120 pounds and 160 pounds . Although the queen size mattress is just some inches larger than the full size mattress, its a lot weightier than it. You may need an extra hand to move it.
  • The dimensions are 60 inches by 80 inches.

Protect Your Mattress Warranty

Most manufacturers require that a mattress be supported by a box spring to file warranty claims. An exception to this is when a mattress lies on a platform bed or adjustable base. Since platform beds feature either wooden slats or a deck, the mattress doesn’t need the extra support of a box spring. Check out our article to learn more about foundations.

The warranty also requires that the box spring is in good enough condition that it will not damage the mattress.

What Size Is A Twin Mattress

Some people incorrectly think a single bed is smaller than a twin. The terms are actually interchangeable for the same sized mattress. Standard twin mattresses are 39 inches wide. Regular twin mattresses are 74 inches long, and a twin XL mattress is 80 inches long.

Extra-long twin beds are commonly used in college dorm rooms. Theyre ideal for taller people who may not be able to accommodate a wider mattress in their space.

Room Size

A twin size bed, and even a twin XL, can comfortably fit in a 7-by-10-foot room. It can also fit in a smaller room of about 6.5 by 6.5 feet but note this room will not be to code when it comes to real estate. It would also be quite cramped and only be able to fit a small wardrobe and desk.

If you need to fit two single or twin beds in one room, it needs to be at least 9 by 9.5 feet. This minimum size doesnt offer much space between beds. Any added furniture, like desks or wardrobes, would need to be quite small.

If you have it, a 10 by 9.5-foot room or 10 by 10 room would fit two twin beds much more comfortably. Another way to fit two twins in a small space is to consider bunk beds. Kids bunk beds will need at least a 3-foot clearance, and theyre between 4 and 5 feet tall. The minimum ceiling height for kids bunk beds is about 7.5 feet.

For adult bunk beds, youll need a bit more clearance, and they run taller between 5 and 6 feet. Make sure your ceiling is at least 8 feet and 6 inches tall.

What Does A Box Spring Do

The term box spring is now more or less interchangeable with the term foundation. Both are designed to perform certain functions:

  • Give support and stability to a mattress
  • Create a firm, flat surface on which the mattress can rest
  • Raise the mattress height and keep it off the floor

However, box spring is somewhat misleading since most newer designs have no actual springs in their construction.

Through the 1800s and the early- to mid-1900s, mattress foundations were constructed by placing metal coils in rows on thin iron straps held in place by and connected to each other with thick wire. This construction design was known as bedsprings rather than box springs. While the design served its purpose of acting as a shock absorber for the mattress, it was flawed.

Because there were so many connecting points among the iron straps, metal springs, and wire, the noise factor was significant. And since the coils were typically far apart, the bedsprings began to sag very quickly. Later, as the coils were placed closer together, housed in wooden frames, and then covered in cloth to provide better functionality, the term bedsprings was replaced with box springs.

When looking for a new mattress, consider weight. If you move frequently, a lighter bed might be a better option, making transportation easier. But if youre planning on settling down in an area long-term, you may want to invest in a bigger mattress for optimal comfort.

Choosing A Box Spring Height

Box springs come in two general heights: 8 to 9 inches and 4.5 to 5.5 inches. Which should you select? Your chosen box spring height depends on several factors, including the following.

  • Bed frame and headboard design: Keep the design and height of your bed frame and headboard in mind as you shop for a box spring. With some designs, a low-profile box spring of 4.5 to 5.5 inches would leave the lower portion of the headboard exposed. In other cases, an unusually tall bed frame paired with an eight-inch box spring would make the bed too tall for an average-size person.

  • Mattress height: Mattresses vary in height. Measure your mattress and bed frame before purchasing a box spring so you have an idea what your final bed height will be.

  • Mattress topper: Mattress toppers can add several inches to the height of your bed. If you plan to use a deluxe mattress topper with your mattress, you may want to consider a low-profile box spring to make getting into bed easier.

  • Your height and mobility: Shorter people may prefer a mattress thats lower to the ground so they dont have to literally climb into bed. People with mobility issues may prefer a higher mattress so that getting into bed is easier. Take your personal preference and physical condition into account when shopping so you can get a bed height that works for you.

Box Spring Vs Foundation

These two words are often used interchangeably, but what’s the difference? Both provide support to a mattress, and they look the same from the outside. However, box springs have steel springs that add support and shock absorption. They work very well with innerspring mattresses, as that’s what they were designed for. They’re not ideal for mattresses that don’t have a coil system, so latex or foam mattresses.

Foundations are a more solid frame, made of metal or wood, and encased in fabric. There are different styles, some are designed with slats and some are solid wooden frames without openings. They’re more suited to non-coil mattresses, which tend to be heavier. They can support more weight than the springs of a box spring but don’t have as much flex.
