Personal preference plays a key role in determining a mattresss comfort, but it’s hard to beat the well-cushioned support of the Purple Original Mattress. Purple hit the market with a unique elastic-polymer grid that cradles the body and allows maximum airflow and breathability. Sleepers of all stylesback, front, and stomachhave reported great sleep on the Purple. We tested one out in our own home to see how different family members would respond. Read on for our verdict.
Support & Motion Isolation
The flexible design of the Purple Grid⢠combined with layers of supportive foam absorbs movement incredibly well. The hybrid styles also do a great job at reducing motion transfer. In the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier models, each individually wrapped coil is free to move independently. This ensures that movements on one side of the bed won’t be felt on the other.
What Is The Purple Grid
The Purple Grid is the signature function of Purple mattresses. Its a proprietary gel foam that Purple called Hyper-Elastic Polymer. When something is hyperelastic, it suggests that it can be considerably extended in different directions and still go back to its original shape. A polymer is just a chemical compound made with duplicating units. When it comes to the Purple Grid, the polymer is formed into a lattice pattern and, yes, its purple.
Initially utilized in medical devices, such as wheelchair cushions, the squishy Purple Grid can now be found as the leading layer of Purple mattresses.
A 2-inch-thick slab of Purple Grid is likewise used in the Purple Double Seat Cushion, a choice in our guide to the very best ergonomic seat cushions. Senior personnel author Melanie Pinola described the cushion as feeling like a gelatinous Belgian waffle, however in an excellent way the Purple Grid makes the cushion both soft and encouraging .
The Purple Grid supposedly bestows a variety of advantages to your mattress, too, consisting of pressure relief, support, breathability, strength, and resilience.

Purple Mattress Firmness And Feel
The secret to its sauce is Purple’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is what gives the bed its signature feel. What is Hyper-Elastic Polymer, you ask? It’s a squishy, stretchy, jelly-like material that’s laid out in a comfort grid design in the top layer of the bed. It definitely takes a few nights to get used to, but once you do, it’s a lovely sleeping experience.
It’s pressure-relieving and soft when I’m on my side, but my back never felt like it sagged into the mattress. So, the Purple is also perfectly supportive. Not to mention it’s extremely bouncy, which should be music to the ears of combination sleepers because it won’t cause any resistance like memory foam does. I’d rate it around a medium on the firmness scale, or a 5 out of 10 with 10 being the firmest.
You can ask for a sample of the material before you test the bed, which I suggest doing if you’re on the fence about trying it. That way, you can decide with absolute certainty if you’re up for the bed or not. But you’ll probably find that it’s durable , soft and a creative idea for a bed’s comfort layer.

How Much Do Purple Mattresses Cost When There Isn’t A Sale
The Purple Mattress Original is the cheapest in the range, and is excellent value compared to other bed-in-a-box companies who don’t have the same level of technology in their entry-level mattresses.

Delivery And Setup: Worth The Struggle
If youve ever ordered from a bed-in-a-box retailer, you know how mind-boggling it is to see your mattress show up in a far-from-mattress-sized package. Yes, it’s big, but the Purple showed up in a bag that was nowhere near as large as we imagined.
Printed on the outside of the mattress bag were easy-to-follow, four-step instructions. While the directions proved simple, getting the mattress out of its packaging was a challenge. To shrink the mattress for shipping, the bed is vacuum-sealed in an airtight bag. It’s then rolled in industrial plastic wrap and slipped into an additional bag.
The process of getting the mattress out of the first bag took almost 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the struggle didnt end there. After getting through the exterior bag, we had to cut away at inner plastic wrap and then slice through the vacuum-sealed bag. Luckily, the mattress comes with a box cutter which made short work of the vacuum-sealed bag. The mattress was only 4 inches deep when in the sealed bag, but after being released, it popped up to 9 inches within a minute. It took another hour for it to reach its full height of 9.5 inches.

Don’t Miss: Tight Top Mattress Meaning
Sleeping Style And Body Weight
The Purple mattress excels at providing a mix of support and pressure relief to lighter side sleepers. Side sleepers need their hips and shoulders to sink into a mattress a bit to maintain spinal alignment, but not too far, or theyll experience increased pressure. Side sleepers also need a mattress to have a supportive transitional layer so they dont develop pressure points in their shoulders or hips. The Purple has the right mix of contouring and support to relieve pressure in most side sleepers under 230 pounds.
Heavier side sleepers, on the other hand, are unlikely to find enough support in the Purple. A mattress of a higher firmness level would be a better choice for this group, and more likely to provide them with the firmness and spinal alignment they need. The Purple rates 6 out of 10 in terms of firmness, and heavier side sleepers might prefer a bed that rates 6.5, 7, or higher instead.
Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds find the Purple mattress provides them enough lumbar support and pressure relief. Most back sleepers in that weight group will enjoy the bed. Some sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds also find a nice mix of support and pressure relief in the Purple, though some might prefer a firmer mattress.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 Mattress
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 is an upgraded hybrid model that includes a 3-inch GelFlex Grid, StretchMax cover, polyfoam, and individually wrapped coils. This model is better for those seeking extra cushioning for pressure relief. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress sizes are Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, and Split King.
The average price for the Premier 3 is around 3,000 dollars. Premier 3 mattresses should improve sleep quality by providing adequate pressure relief, support, and cooling.
The mattress top that goes with these beds is the brands mattress protector. Purple does not sell traditional mattress toppers or pads. The protector will not adjust the feel of the bed, but it can help extend the lifespan by safeguarding the mattress against stains and spills.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 should last about 7-10 years.

How Firm Is The Purple
We ranked the Purple around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The market requirement for medium firmness is 6.5, so this suggests the Purple is right around medium-firm.
That stated, note that a sleepers understanding of a beds firmness will differ a bit depending on their weight. In this case, heavier-weight sleepers may find that the original Purple feels softer, while light- and medium-weight folks might find it to be on the firmer side.
Is the Purple a Good Mattress Model for You?
Depending upon factors like your body weight, chosen sleeping position, and whether you sleep with a partner or pet, the Purple may or might not be right for you.

Tip: Use A Mattress Protector
Always use a mattress protector to keep your mattress clean. You can zip off and clean the cover and put it in the wash. We recommend that you do after you purchase a used Purple mattress.
Still, you want another washable barrier between the bed and the sheets to protect and prolong your investment. Once any liquids or spills get into the mattress itself you run the risk of bacteria building up that can damage the foam inside. So we highly recommend purchasing a new Purple mattress protector directly from Purple. It’s stretchy to allow the comfort grid to move and be flexible.

How Firm Is The Purple Mattress
In terms of firmness, honestly, its hard to rate the Original Purple bed given the unique characteristics of the polymer top layer. However, if you really pulled our collective arms, wed say its about a medium on the firmness scale. Overall, the Purple mattress finds a really nice balance between pressure relief and support.
Other Considerations: Warranty And Certifications
Purple provides a 10-year-limited warranty on all their mattresses. The warranty is only valid for the original purchaser and through authorized dealers, which usually means through the Purple website. Purple is very specific about the kinds of issues that apply to the warranty, including indentations that are deeper than one inch in comparison to the surrounding mattress. Validation requires careful measuring and visual evidence. Please note that the mattress cover has a separate two-year warranty.
The Purple Original Twin Mattress is CertiPUR-US certified. This independent organization tests products that contain polyurethane foam for off-gassing and potential exposure to harmful chemicals.Certifications from independent organizations can give you an idea about the quality of the material and whether or not it poses any health hazards.

Purple Mattress aims to solve this problem by analyzing the factors that make a great sleep even better with some proprietary technologies like their Purple Grid Layer, which gives the mattress a certain experience that is distinct than other mattresses on the market. How To Take Care Of Your Purple Mattress
The Purple mattress cover does zip off, but it should not be machine washed and dried since the fabric can shrink. Instead, spot clean it with a mild detergent or upholstery cleaner, and use a mattress protector that has some stretch.
The stretchier your sheets and mattress protector are, the more you will maximize the benefits and lifespan of Purple. When sheets or protectors are too tight, or have no stretch, they can act as a barrier between you and the polymer grid layer, preventing optimal pressure relief.
You should not flip the Purple since the benefits of the top layer will be lost. While rotating it is not required, the company recommends it every 6 months.

Who Started Purple Mattress
Purple has a variety of imaginative names particularly twins Terry and Tony Pearce, who are experts in manufacturing and materials, respectively. They used both their experience to design modern versions of things they deemed needed more attention in terms of design and comfort.
This led to the development of Floam, a high-tech cushioning fluid used in various items including footwear and medical instruments. The issue of Floam has been that the product was usually only available for institutional bodies as the cost to create the technology was prohibitive.
The two brothers set out to design an affordable Floam and then came up with their patented Hyper-elastic Polymer. Soft, stretchy, and durable, the Hyper elastic polymer soon became the foundational aspect of what creates a Purple mattress supple and supportive at the same time.
