The Best Time To Buy A Mattress
No matter where you decide to buy your mattress, you may be able to get an even better deal by waiting until the right time of year.
Holiday weekends are always a great time to look for deals on major purchases. Specifically, youll see markdowns for mattresses around Presidents Day, Memorial Day and Black Friday. Prices will also be more competitive during Cyber Monday, Amazon Prime Day and just before new inventory rolls out in June.
To see how mattress prices vary throughout the year, I used Camelcamelcamel to track the price history of a few mattresses at Amazon. Even if you dont plan on buying a mattress at Amazon, you can bet that the price drops are in line with other competitive retailers throughout the year.
Around January 2020, I tracked the history of a 2019 model Lucid 10 gel memory foam mattress using Camelcamelcamel. Heres what I found:
As you can see, the price had fluctuated greatly within a year. The lowest price was $169.99 while the highest price was $239.99 for this mattress. That means there was an ultimate savings opportunity of $70 simply by making this purchase at the right time.
The lowest price appeared a week before Black Friday in November. Another major drop happened earlier around Presidents Day in February.
As of January 2021, the 2020 model Lucid 10 gel memory foam mattress seemed to be following a familiar pattern with price drops around Black Friday in November and Memorial Day in May.
Where To Buy An Affordable Mattress
When debating mattress price, quality is key, but the price tag is important too. If you dont want to compromise on quality but are worried about spending too much, shop online. The best online mattresses are generally cheaper than mattresses sold in a store.
Thats because online mattress retailers cut out all the middle man costs, floor markups and mattress salesman tricks. Online mattresses are sold direct-to-consumer, so you dont have to worry about a salesman trying to make a commission off you.

The list below includes both online and in-store merchants, and our data shows that people tend to be equally happy purchasing a mattress either way. Among our members, more than 8 in 10 who bought a mattress online and in-store reported being satisfied with their experience.
These are just some of the findings from our Winter 2020 Mattress Retailers Survey, in which more than 4,400 members gave feedback about their recent shopping experiences, both online and in-store.
Members dished about retailers mattress selection, sales service, and customer support, as well as whether floor models were clean and delivery was on time. We also got into price: How much did they pay, how happy they were with that price, and did they haggle?
Using our data, we created ratings for 16 mattress retail chains as well as independent retailers.

We recommend reading the fine print on a mattress brands shipping, return, and warranty policies before purchasing a new bed, especially if you are buying online. These policies are fairly consistent across different brands, but careful research will help shoppers avoid hidden fees. This section includes a general overview of what to expect for mattress shipping, returns, and warranties.

Options: The vast majority of online brands offer free ground shipping within the contiguous U.S. Some also ship for free to Alaska, Hawaii, and/or Canada. Most standard ground deliveries reach their destination in two weeks or less. If standard shipping will take too long, customers may be able to select expedited shipping for an added charge. A third option, if available, is White Glove delivery. This includes in-home assembly and old mattress removal, but the wait time is often longer typically two to three weeks.
Rates: Standard ground shipping is normally free within the contiguous U.S. Customers in Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and other non-contiguous locations that qualify for delivery may pay anywhere from $100 to $600 for mattress shipping. Expedited shipping will also incur extra charges, but usually no more than $50. If White Glove delivery is not free, expect to pay at least $150 for in-home assembly and old mattress removal.

Beware that if you go the cheaper route and purchase a lower quality mattress, you put yourself at risk for a number of negative physical symptoms. These include low back pain, joint pain, waking up achy, and sleep loss that can lead to memory issues, increased blood pressure, weight gain, and depression.
Our best advice is to take yoursleep trial period seriously and pay attention to how your body adjusts to the new mattress. Is it supportive enough? Does it wear out easily? Does it limit motion transfer enough? Is there enough edge support? Is your sleep suffering from being on the mattress? Most brands give you an average of 100 nights to try the bed out, so take it seriously and pay attention to how your sleep changes as a result of sleeping on the mattress.

How We Picked And Tested
We started our research for this guide by evaluating about two-dozen cheap mattresses, using criteria similar to what we use for our main foam, hybrid, and innerspring guides. This is what we look for:
We also considered the quality of each mattress companys customer service, but in the end that didnt factor into our decision process. With the exception of a few standouts, customer service was subpar across the category compared with that of companies selling more-expensive mattresses. I got disconnected from multiple customer service calls after being on hold for several minutes, and most of the companies I contacted wouldnt reveal information, such as the foam densities of their mattresses. Several companies had average or poor ratings with the Better Business Bureau . On the whole, when you buy a cheaper mattress, you can expect to get less-personalized treatment and less access to customer service.
Eventually, I settled on five finalists: the Best Price Mattress Memory Foam, the Classic Brands Cool Gel Memory Foam, the Vibe Gel Memory Foam, the Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid, and the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam. I then slept on each mattress for at least one week in my apartment, and I spent a week sleeping on the Novaform ComfortGrande to assess how a more expensive mattress compared.
