When you sew your own fitted sheets, you can repurpose flat sheets or duvet covers in a larger size, or buy fabric to customize bedding to match your decor. Shrinkage Of The Fabric And Sheet Sizes
Cotton is a natural fiber, and as such, it will suffer a certain amount of shrinkage, typically about 2-5% upon initial washing and drying cycles. When manufacturing products, we allow for such shrinkage and cut the fabric a little larger so that your linen shrinks to the correct size when you first wash it.

Sew The Elastic To The Sheet
Insert a ballpoint or stretch needle in your sewing machine if you have one. It will help keep the stitches from skipping when sewing through elastic.
Use a zig-zag stitch to attach the elastic to the edge of the sheet, overlapping the inside fold of the hem. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning, then stretch the elastic as you sew.
Make your way around the entire sheet. When you reach the starting point, overlap the elastic and backstitch again. Trim the excess elastic.
If you prefer to only have elastic at the corners of the sheet, cut 4 pieces of elastic 10″ long.
Center each piece of elastic at the bottom of each boxed corner on the wrong side of the sheet. Stretch each end of elastic as far as it will go along the edge of the sheet. Use a zig-zag stitch to attach the elastic to the corners of the sheet, keeping the elastic stretched so that it will pull in the sides. Repeat on all four corners.
Tip: Pulling the elastic can put stress on the needle and thread. If you find that the thread is breaking, make sure you have a large enough needle without any spurs and that you’re using good quality thread.

The top reason to purchase a sheet set is because of the value. You will likely get pillow cases, a fitted sheet, and a flat sheet for less than purchasing each individually. However, for those that prefer to sleep without a flat sheet, this may not be the direction to take. Therefore, this option works best for someone who wants the entire package.
- Individual Pieces
Purchasing individuals pieces are great for two reasons:
Our research indicates that linen sheets are especially prone to wear thin percale and sateen sheets can also wear thin if you or your sleeping partner have rough feet. If you prefer sleeping with these types of sheets, it is nice to have the option to replace just the sheet you need.
Pillow cases also need to be replaced occasionally as they will stain quicker than your sheets. Some people also like to buy additional pillow cases in order to change them out more frequently than the rest of their bedding.

Bed Sheet Fabric Types
Cotton sheets Cotton sheets are breathable, cool, soft and wicks moisture away from your skin. They also come in both natural and synthetic options depending on your preferences. The difference between these cottons is that the synthetic variety is more durable and inexpensive, while the natural option provides a more comfortable feel. Regardless of which type of cotton you choose, they are both durable, soft, and easy to maintain.
Egyptian Cotton Egyptian cotton has its fabulous reputation for a reason. This type of fabric is one of the most luxurious varieties on the market due to its impressive qualities. Egyptian cotton is different from standard cotton because it is made with extra-long fibers which makes for a softer fabric.
Jersey Knit While Jersey knit sheets are still made from either natural or synthetic cotton, where they differ is the way they are produced. Instead of being woven like traditional cotton sheets, they are knitted. This gives the sheets a natural stretch and extra warmth. Keep in mind that jersey knit sheets do not have a thread count. Instead, the quality of the sheet can be measured by its weight per square yard.
Microfiber Microfiber sheets are known to be extremely comfortable and warm. These sheets are made from tightly woven synthetic fibers, which make a soft and durable fabric. They are commonly made from either nylon polymers, polyester, or wood pulp, creating a thin yet strong linen.
