What Are Memory Foam Mattresses Made Of
Memory foam is made from polyurethane foam a material first manufactured in the fifties by mixing water with halocarbons or hydrocarbons. Depending on the chemicals added, the mixture could be processed into everything from car parts, to spray liner, to sleep surfaces. Today, memory foam mattresses are usually made from polyol mixed with water and a chemical compound called a diisocyanate.
You can imagine the solution rising like bread, with the cell structure opening based on the application of chemicals to allow more or less airflow, creating more or less spring. These mattresses vary by firmness , density and thickness .
Consumers choose memory foam for the supreme comfort of the mattress stuffing and the way it hugs the body to reduce pressure points.
A Few Potential Flaws
Its just as important to know what you dont want in a mattress as to be aware of the features youre looking for. If you think you may want to explore this option further, a few downsides include:
- Sometimes more expensive than comparable products quality-wise due to their current trending status
- With many people confused as to exactly what comprises a hybrid, you may have to do some research before purchasing a product to verify that it is, indeed, a hybrid

How To Choose Between Spring Foam Or Hybrid
The first thing you need to determine is whether you want a spring mattress or a foam mattress . Heres everything you need to know to decide between spring, foam, and hybrid: Innerspring MattressesThe most traditional type of mattress, the spring mattress is made up of a layer of coils surrounded by layers of comfort material that can consist of materials like latex, natural fibers, or foam. Different types of spring mattresses use different coil types and layouts to achieve different effects.
- Can wear out more quickly than foam
- Older springs can become noisy
- Offer less pressure relief on joints
Spring mattresses are often the best choice for stomach and back sleepers, those with lower back pain, and heavier individuals who find foam mattresses dont offer sufficient support.Foam MattressesFirst popularized after NASA invented memory foam in the 1970s, foam mattresses rely on different combinations of different-density foams to provide softness and support. Though memory foam is the most well-known type of foam mattress, there are several different types that provide different benefits.Advantages
- Softer on side sleepers and those with joint pain
- Absorbs motion of restless sleepers
- Lack of springs eliminates noise
- More durable than spring mattresses long-term
- Certain foams trap body heat
- Softness can cause sinking feeling
- Insufficient support for certain types of sleeper
- More expensive than spring mattresses

What Type Of Mattress
Before we dismantled the mattress, I actually did not know that much about it. We bought the mattress many years before I founded this website, back when I knew zero, zip, NADA about mattresses! I probably would have told you that it was a coil mattress with a pillowtop. I certainly wouldnt have been able to tell you much more about it!
Now, I can tell you that our old mattress was a hybrid consisting of:
- A layer of polyfoam inside the pillowtop
- A very thin latex layer
- A 1.5 inch polyfoam layer
- Zoned pocket coil support core
Show Me The Support Core
The zoned pocket coil system in our mattress worked like this:
- Firmer springs around the edge of the mattress
- Firmer springs through the middle third of the mattress
- Bouncier springs on either side of the firmer middle zone
The pocket coils were the same gauge on the edge and through the middle. I cannot tell you what gauge they were, but they were definitely thicker and less bouncy than the other ones, so the firmer springs would have been a lower gauge.
Heres a picture Andrew pulling out every single coil for recycling, you can clearly see the zones. You can also see where the base had been sprayed with glue and has attracted a sticky mess.

Unpack The Mattress Topper
Unpacking a mattress topper should be done very carefully. First, open the topper box then slide out the rolled mattress topper with its cover. Place the mattress topper on the bed and carefully tear open the plastic cover. Unfold the mattress slowly and allow it to naturally unroll to a flat positiondont force it to flatten as this may damage the product. Remove the plastic cover, and install the mattress topper on top of the mattress in its desired position. We like this mattress topper from Amazon with its soothing lavender infusion. Our article on how to use and clean a mattress topper provides in-depth care instructions for mattress toppers.
What About Mattress Toppers
With every mattress, you also have the option of adding a mattress topper. Think of a mattress topper as a pillow top that isnt sewn into the mattress. Whereas mattress materials should be chosen for their combination of comfort and support, mattress toppers are designed to enhance comfort only. You can find foam mattress toppers in the same varieties you can find foam mattresses as well as cotton, down, or fiberfill. In cases where budget is a primary factor in choosing a mattress, combining a more affordable mattress with a high-end mattress topper can help achieve the comfort effect you seek at a fraction of the cost of a high-end mattress. While having a comprehensive knowledge of mattress basics is essential to make an informed decision while buying a mattress, theres no substitute for expert knowledge. A mattress professional can listen to your individual comfort and cost needs and make individualized recommendations based on what matters to you most. Its also a great idea to test out a mattress before committing to it long-term. Trying out mattresses in-store can be helpful for determining basics like whether you prefer spring or foam, but the only way to know for sure whether a mattress is for you is to sleep on it. Look for mattresses with liberal return policies or a risk-free trial period that will give you the freedom to let your body make the final call on your perfect mattress.

Do You Need A Box Spring If You Have Slats
In a situation where your bed already has built-in slats, you dont need a box spring. Using a box spring with these slats will not add any support to your mattress, itll only make it higher and weightier.
Platform bed slats are enough to support your mattress on their own. If, however, the slats are too far apart, it will not give adequate support, and your bed will begin to sag.
Bed slats have more advantages than other foundations. They are less expensive and easy to replace or repair. When a part of a box spring is ruined, the whole thing becomes useless. Bed slats are also easy to move and provide excellent airflow. Box springs, on the other hand, are unyielding.
- Metal vs. Wood
In as much as metal slats are more expensive, they dont tend to bend, break or sag as wooden slats do under the pressure of mattresses. Some metal slats are made to adjust themselves to fit different bed widths.
- Bunkie Boards
Bunkie boards are another alternative for box springs and bed slats. Actually, a Bunkie board is any solid material that is set on a slat and then enclosed in fabric. There are available high-tech Bunkie boards made with wood strips or chips. In fact, they can be more effective than box springs in giving support.
- Mattress Foundations
Just as box springs are designed for spring mattresses, mattress foundations are made to support latex, memory foams, and polymer mattresses. Mattress foundations are built with wood or metal and covered with a breathable cloth.
A Higher Mattress Price Doesnt Mean Higher Quality
We want to stress something important: You cant judge a mattress by its price tag. The best mattress-in-a-box for you has more to do with your body, sleeping position, tendency to run cool or hot, and other factors, not price. This is key to keep in mind when shopping for a mattress online, especially since online mattresses tend to be less expensive . Online mattress stores are often able to offer their products at lower prices because they dont have the same overhead costs as a traditional showroom.

If You Decide To Order This Mattress
You can buy this mattress from either Amazon or directly from Purple. I decided to buy it from Amazon after doing significant research on the differences between the two different methods. See what I learned about the differences in the link below this section.
Lastly, I am a stay-at-home mother and part-time writer/researcher. I make my income by researching topics such as this and writing about what I find. If you believe this mattress is right for you and plan to order it, please do so from my Amazon link in this article.
I would never ask that any of my dedicated readers buy a mattress that wasnt right for them, so if you believe that to be the case, then do not order this mattress. If you are going to order it anyway, please do so from my link and it would be greatly appreciated.

What Is Inside A Mattress
ByEvan Chang | Submitted On August 17, 2009
I have seen people quite often asking questions like: “what kind of mattress is good?” “What is the best mattress in the market?” When I see questions like that, I know a proper way to ask should be “What is the right mattress for me?” Again, there is no single good mattress or claimed best mattress, but there is a mattress in the market that meets your sleeping requirement and your budget. When you look at mattresses, you really should look at what is really inside the mattress to determine whether the mattress is right for you. In this article, we will explore what is inside an innerspring mattress.
Everyone knows that coils or springs are the core of a mattress. Indeed, they provide the support you needed. There are a number of ways to construct the coils such as contiguous coil and pocket coil. Each design has its own pros and cons. For example, pocket coil will separate the motion transfer so it is perfect for a couple. A salesman is likely to greet you and show you how many coils the mattress has and how good the mattress is. Well, you need to look further more than just the coil count and coil gauge. The upholstery layer is key for determining how comfortable the mattress will be. There are four layers above the coils: Insulation, cushioning, quilting and ticking.

Add The Mattress Protector
A mattress protector provides an extra layer of protection when fastened over the mattress topper. It prevents spills, body odors, sweat and other liquids from reaching your mattress topper and mattress. We like this vinyl free zippered protector from Amazon because it’s waterproof and prevents bed bugs from reaching the mattress. Ensure that the mattress protector completely encloses the mattress topper and mattress for best results. Our article on whether you need a mattress protector provides useful information when considering buying a mattress protector.
What Are Innerspring Mattress Made From
Innerspring mattresses come in two different kinds of systems: open coil or individually pocketed springs. The outer quilting is usually made from traditional cotton fabric blends that give every mattress a unique look, fitted with some steel coil springs for a strong base support. It is essential to know that the amount of coils doesnt always amount to the same exact level of comfort from one mattress to the next but plays a role in reducing the motion transfer and offering genuine support. Each mattress manufacturer uses different designs and support techniques to achieve this result, often including layers of polyurethane foam and filling inside this mattress. However, more luxurious and nice innerspring mattresses will use other types of foam, including memory foam, gel memory foam, or latex materials. These are all designed to help you sleep great at night.

Casper Vs Purple Mattress
The Casper and Purple mattresses vary significantly in their construction. The original Casper mattress features an all-foam construction and a Zoned Support system thats firmer near the middle of the mattress and softer near the head and foot. As noted above, the Purple is primarily constructed from the brands proprietary hyper-elastic gel polymer.
These construction differences produce very different feels. The original Casper has a balanced foam feel thats responsive and bouncy. As weve discussed, the Purple has a squishy-yet-firm feel thats also bouncy and responsive.
These mattresses also differ slightly in terms of their firmness levels. We ranked the Purple at 6.5/10, while we ranked the Casper a touch firmer at 7/10.
The mattresses are most similar when it comes to price. Depending on discounts and coupons, both mattresses should cost around $1,000 or so for a Queen size.
