Mattress Firm May Get Rescued By Its Biggest Supplier

If Advent bought it, Tempur Sealy would be out, an industry source said.

Tempurs shares surged 11 percent on Wednesday as investors bet that a Mattress Firm bankruptcy a possibility reported this week by Reuters could pave the way for Tempurs beds to return.

But Mattress Firm CEO Steve Stagner and Tempur CEO Scott Thompson arent on friendly terms and, under Stagner, Mattress Firm will likely not invite Tempur back, the source said. Steinhoff International, which acquired Mattress Firm in 2016 for $2.6 billion, does not have any known plans to replace Stagner.

There will be no change if the CEOs dont change, the source said.

After buying Mattress Firm, Steinhoff scooped up the Long Island-based Sleepys for $780 million.

Mattress Firm could fetch a price close to $1 billion in a bankruptcy auction as it closes 600 to 700 stores, sources said.

Advent declined to comment. Mattress Firm did not return calls.

No Rest For The Mattress Firm

Nobody knows the value of a good nights sleep better than Steve Fendrich, 54. With two college friends, he opened a small mattress store in Houston in 1986, scraping out a living by transporting beds on the top of his car and heating frozen meals on its dashboard for lunch. That store grew into Mattress Firm, the largest specialty mattress retailer in the U.S., with more than 2,400 stores in 36 states after an acquisitions binge . It estimates sales of $2.4 billion in 2015 and profits of $50 million. Fendrichs story:

I didnt know there was such a thing as the mattress business when I graduated from college. I grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D., and got an accounting degree from the University of South Dakota, where I met Harry Roberts and Paul Stork, my future partners in Mattress Firm .

Harry had a brother-in-law, Jack Smith, who owned the American Bed Co., a chain of mattress stores in Houston. The three of us went to work for him and learned the business.

It was the infancy of bedding specialty retail, and in 1983 I ran an American Bed store in Chicago. In 1985, I became comptroller of the company and moved to Houston. As I dug into the financials, I saw that capital needs were greater than the cash coming in.

Paul, Harry, and I decided we could do better. So in March 1986, I left, and Harry and Paul soon followed. American Bed filed for bankruptcy later that year.

In late 1987 we gave ourselves our first paychecks of $300 a week.

The owner of Serta Simmons, the nations largest mattress maker, is weighing a plan to acquire Mattress Firm if the struggling retailer goes bankrupt, The Post has learned.

Serta Simmons owner Advent International, a Boston-based buyout firm, may bid for the biggest US mattress retailer once it files for Chapter 11 a filing that may happen as soon as this week, according to sources.

Advent had been considering a deal to rescue Mattress Firm by scooping it up ahead of a possible bankruptcy filing, sources told The Post last month.

The troubled retailer owes more than $100 million in receivables to Serta and, last year, Serta shelled out another $100 million to launch a five-year marketing partnership with Mattress Firm across its 3,300 stores.

It appears, however, that Advent and Mattress Firm have failed to agree on a price, according to sources briefed on the talks.

Mattress Firm, meanwhile, has since agreed to give Serta Simmons preferred vendor status in a bankruptcy so it would be paid in full for its receivables, a source said an unusual move that would put it ahead of debt holders, according to a source whos close to the situation.

An Advent acquisition of Mattress Firm would likely preserve Serta Simmons status as the dominant supplier to Mattress Firm a position that was bolstered last year when the retailer dropped Tempur Sealy in a contract dispute.

Mattress Firm Files For Ipo 6 Years After Going Private

Mattress Firm has publicly filed for an IPO that will return the furniture retailer to the public markets six years after South Africas Steinhoff International took the company private.

The company said in a statement that it plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MRFM, the same ticker it used in its previous listing on the Nasdaq. In an S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Mattress Firm said that certain of its private investors plan to sell $100 million of stock via the initial public offering, although this is likely just a placeholder as the number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have yet to be determined.

Mattress Firm first announced in September 2021 that it had confidentially filed to go public. After going private in 2016, the chain hit a few bumps in the road, including an accounting scandal that saw the resignation of the current CEO. In 2017, Mattress Firm filed for bankruptcy to facilitate a prepackaged restructuring that included the closure of 700 underperforming stores. Today, the retailer operates 2,353 locations and said in its filing that we are nearly twice the size of our next largest competitor and eight times larger than the next largest multi-branded mattress specialty retailer in the United States .

Bc Partners To Acquire Account

NEW YORK, Dec 29 – Private equity firm BC Partners said on Thursday it has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Madison Logic, a provider of business-to-business digital marketing services.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a person familiar with the matter told Reuters the transaction valued Madison Logic at about $750 million.

BC Partners is acquiring Madison Logic from Clarion Capital Partners, a New York-based private equity firm that had acquired the company in 2016.

Clarion as well as Madison Logic executives including chief executive Tom O’Regan and co-founders Vin Turk and Erik Matlick will remain minority shareholders in the company following the BC Partners acquisition.

Madison Logic helps businesses track and target enterprise customers with digital marketing to generate sales. The New York-based company was founded in 2005 and has about 250 customers, including Amazon , Google owner Alphabet Inc , Adobe Inc , Microsoft Inc and Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc .

Spending on business-to-business digital marketing constitutes a small but growing part of the nearly $300 billion U.S. digital advertising market.

Madison Logic competes with TechTarget Inc for market share in the U.S. business-to-business advertising sector, which is expected to grow by 15% to $16.5 billion in 2023, according to market research firm eMarketer.

Mattress Firm is owned by Steinhoff International, the second largest furniture retailer in the world, just after IKEA. For the past 10 years, they have been buying regional chains after regional chains of mattress sellers.

I remember seeing 4 mattress firms in each corner of an intersection once, there’s no way there’s that much demand for mattresses. In exchange, Mattress Firm states, Levy and Vinson obtained diamonds, a Roger Dubuis watch, holidays in Europe and stakes in other real estate deals. On Tuesday, a comment on Reddit stating that Mattress Firm, the largest specialty mattress retailer in the United States, is a money laundering operation went viral, but has since been phased out, The Next Web reported. We reached out to Mattress Firm corporate headquarters to ask why consumers can sometimes see two or more Mattress Firm brick-and-mortar buildings a little close to each other.

The management of Mattress Firm, led by Steve Stagner, CEO, and Ken Murphy, President and CEO, will remain in place and continue to lead the day-to-day activities of Mattress Firm.

Dispute With Andreas Seifert

Predating the accounting scandal was a longstanding legal dispute between Steinhoff and Austrian investor Andreas Seifert of XXXLutz. Jooste linked the dispute to the accounting scandal, saying that Seifert was the source of the initial allegations of false accounting. The November 2015 raids of Steinhoff’s Westerstede offices had also involved the seizure of documents signed by Seifert, though Seifert said that the documents, and his signature on them, had been . Most centrally, however, the dispute concerned Steinhoff asset Poco, a discount furniture chain: Seifert claimed 50 per cent ownership of Poco, while Steinhoff claimed it had bought Seifert out. In February 2018, an Amsterdam court ruled that Steinhoff had to change its accounts to reflect Seifert’s part-ownership, and, later that year, a German court which had been hearing the case since 2015 urged the parties to settle. In late April 2018, Steinhoff reached a settlement with Seifert which saw Seifert buy a 50 per cent stake in Poco for an amount calculated as a multiple of Poco’s earnings, on the basis of an agreed of 532.5 million for Poco in its entirety.

At Area Mattress Firm Locations Lessons From Dad Are Lived Every Day

Some of his earliest memories are of riding shotgun in a flatbed pickup, tagging along as his father delivered mattresses. He met attorneys and physicians and judges and police officers, and saw how easily his father interacted with them all. James Perez wasnt just along for the ride he was absorbing lessons that he would use later in his own life, even if he was too young to realize it at the time.

Wherever he went, I went with him. He taught me how to talk to policemen, judges, insurance agents. He was putting in me parts that would never rust out, Perez recalls. Those lessons are timeless, because theyre lessons about people. All those things really became the backbone of our company today.

Those lessons on the way his father Art conducted business stuck with him, and in time James Perez put them to work by assembling a team that helped him make his own successful mark in the bedding business. Riding along with his father led to jobs at local furniture and bedding stores, and in 1997 to being awarded his first Mattress Firm franchise.

James Perez now owns 14 Mattress Firm locations in South Texas, including five in Corpus Christi. Today, his wife and business partner are among those integral to the enterprise. But his first partners were his parents, extending their family tradition in the bedding business. James original Mattress Firm location opened in the same Agnes Street building where his father had run a used furniture store.

Mattress Firm Relies Heavily On Its Relationships With Tempur Sealy And Serta Simmons

Tempur Sealy accounted for 36.6% and Serta Simmons accounted for 27.8% of the company’s mattress product costs in fiscal 2021. Mattress Firm said that its “success depends on the continued popularity and reputation of these suppliers.”

But, Mattress Firm had a serious hiccup with one of these brands once before. In February 2017, Tempur Sealy sent Mattress Firm a notice of termination, thereby ending its supply of products to the retailer. That included all three national brands of Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Stearns & Foster items. In 2019, after Mattress Firm’s trip through bankruptcy, the companies entered into a new supplier agreement.

The Company Recently Shifted Its Workforce To A Commission

Mattress Firm employs over 6,500 sales associates, which it calls “Sleep Experts.” Those workers all receive around 240 hours of training through a new hire education program that lasts between six to eight weeks.

In 2020, the retailer shifted more to a commission-based compensation model and found that sales per employee increased in the six months that followed the change. Additionally, the company is working on improving tools where store managers can receive commission on customers that visit a store but complete a transaction online.

Mattress Firm Loses Ceo

Beautyrest Beyond Mattresses 2023 EXPLAINED by GoodBed.com

After taking Mattress Firm into and out of bankruptcy, the companys CEO is stepping down.

The brand said Wednesday that its board has accepted the resignation of Steve Stagner, who started his latest stint as chief executive in March 2018. He spent decades at the company before then.

The leadership shakeup follows a difficult time for the brand, which has been struggling to compete with online retailers like Casper and Amazon. The company also over-expanded .

In October, Mattress Firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to get out of about 700 unfavorable leases. It exited bankruptcy almost two months later, as planned.

Mattress Firms parent company, Steinhoff International, has also been troubled. In 2017, its CEO resigned in the wake of accounting problems.

Mattress Firm is hoping that its smaller store footprint about 2,600 nationally as of November, compared to roughly 3,300 at the time it filed for bankruptcy and more liquidity will help it turn things around.

Steves leadership has been critical through this period where we needed to return the business to positive momentum, the companys board said Wednesday. Stagner said that now is the right time to leave Mattress Firm and make way for fresh leadership, adding that he will spend more time with his family after a busy year.

During this leadership transition, the board plans to work with remaining management to execute a growth strategy, Mattress Firm said in a statement.
