Head below for more details on the Purple Plus mattress, including the full pricing, available sizes, design and features.
Will It Sag Along The Edges
Although it improves significantly on common all-foam drawbacks, the Purple is still limited by foams poor edge support. While it has an average amount of support around its perimeter, sitting on the edge of the bed will cause it to sink beneath the weight and slightly distort the sleep surface. Sleeping close to the edge offers less support, but there is little feeling of roll-off except for sleepers above 230 pounds.
This is due to the high-density polyfoam core and transitional layer, which do the heavy lifting of stabilizing the entire bed. While they offer good support overall, the lack of reinforcement around the edges means that they may flex or bend in these areas more than in the center.
Despite these drawbacks, most people will find that the Purple offers enough edge support for their needs. However, people with mobility problems may struggle with the dip caused by sitting on the edge, particularly when combined with the Purples below-average profile.
Adjustable Firmness Vs Fixed Firmness
Sleep Number differs from most mattress brands in that sleepers can use the remote to adjust the mattress firmness almost instantly. Adding air to the air chambers makes the bed feel firmer, while removing air makes it plusher. The Sleep Number mattresses are ideal for sleepers with changing comfort needs. As each side of the mattress can be adjusted independently, these mattresses are also suitable for couples with different firmness preferences.

Is The Purple Mattress Cooling
The Purple is one of the coolest mattresses on the market that doesnt contain a layer of innerspring coils. The polymer gel grid comfort layer has over 1,800 air channels, facilitating airflow that whisks away excess body heat. Purple describes its mattresses as sleeping temperature neutral, and our team agrees. Even the mattress cover is designed to be ultra-breathable for a refreshing nights sleep.

Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress
With a hybrid construction, the Purple Premier provides superior comfort, support, and pressure relief. It’s offered in two comfort options where sleepers can choose from either a medium-firm 3 comfort layer or a medium 4 layer.

Hybrid Mattress Cost Considerations
First, make sure any hybrid mattress youre buying is actually a hybrid. Technically, these mattresses need to have at least 2 inches of latex or memory foam in the comfort layer AND in a support core for pocketed coils. A mattress that uses a polyfoam support core does not count as a hybrid bed. Neither does a bed made out of multiple types of foam, without coils.
Some hybrid mattresses feature microcoils as a transitional layer in addition to the pocketed coils in the support core. These usually make the bed more expensive because of the support they add, though, whether they add to the comfort depends on the individual sleeper.
As this cross-section shows, a hybrid mattress uses a coil support base with layers of foam on top.
Beyond that, the price of hybrid mattresses is determined by a combination of the factors mentioned for foam and/or latex and innerspring beds. Higher density foam will be more expensive, as will lower gauge coils. All-natural latex will cost more, while synthetic will be less of an investment.
Is The Purple Mattress Good For Couples
For couples with suitable sleep position preferences and weights, the Purple mattress offers a relaxing sleep at an affordable price-point.
The Purple has some of the best temperature neutrality on the market, allowing couples to avoid overheating due to their combined body heat. Excellent motion isolation and a lack of squeaks and creaks also play an essential role in ensuring a deep sleep, as rolling over or changing positions in the night is unlikely to disturb your partner.
Furthermore, the Purple is also much more suitable for sex than many of its all-foam competitors, with reasonable ease of movement and impressive responsiveness for its construction.
The beds one downside for couples is its edge support. While most sleepers will find it acceptable, those who want to use the beds full sleep surface and sleep very close to the edge may find that the support in this area is slightly less than it is closer to the center.

Sleeping Style And Body Weight
The Purple mattress excels at providing a mix of support and pressure relief to lighter side sleepers. Side sleepers need their hips and shoulders to sink into a mattress a bit to maintain spinal alignment, but not too far, or theyll experience increased pressure. Side sleepers also need a mattress to have a supportive transitional layer so they dont develop pressure points in their shoulders or hips. The Purple has the right mix of contouring and support to relieve pressure in most side sleepers under 230 pounds.
Heavier side sleepers, on the other hand, are unlikely to find enough support in the Purple. A mattress of a higher firmness level would be a better choice for this group, and more likely to provide them with the firmness and spinal alignment they need. The Purple rates 6 out of 10 in terms of firmness, and heavier side sleepers might prefer a bed that rates 6.5, 7, or higher instead.
Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds find the Purple mattress provides them enough lumbar support and pressure relief. Most back sleepers in that weight group will enjoy the bed. Some sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds also find a nice mix of support and pressure relief in the Purple, though some might prefer a firmer mattress.

How Does Body Weight Impact The Purple Mattress’ Performance
Although we consider the Purple to have a medium-firm feel of 6 out of 10, its unique construction means that it is most appropriate for sleepers under 230 pounds, and is particularly suitable for those under 130 pounds.
This is unusual, as lighter sleepers tend to prefer softer beds than their heavier peers. Standard materials compress more under more weight, leading to firmer beds feeling subjectively softer for heavier sleepers. However, the Purple Grid is designed to buckle appropriately regardless of weight, allowing lighter sleepers to enjoy both pressure relief and the support of a medium-firm bed.
Heavier sleepers, on the other hand, may find that while the Purple Grid still provides a comfortable sleep the Purples 9.25-inch height isnt enough to offer them appropriate support. Even with the transitional polyfoam layer, heavier sleepers are likely to sink further through the comfort layers than is ideal, reducing both pressure relief and support.
The importance of sleep position also increases with weight. While stomach sleepers under 130 pounds may still find that the Purple offers them a good sleep, those who weigh more must be more selective depending on their sleep position preferences.

Does The Purple Mattress Need Special Sheets
Each model in the line of Purple mattresses performs best when used with stretchy and breathable sheets. This allows the gel grid top layer to flex more easily, providing better support and pressure relief. Any stretchy sheets will do, but Purple recommends using either the brands Purple Sheets or SoftStretch sheets.

How Long Will The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 Mattress Last
When it comes to estimating the comfort lifespan of a mattress, we tend to use foam density as our best, albeit imperfect, predictor of how long a foam will retain its shape and resiliency. In the case of the Purple mattress, we expect the top gel honeycomb layer to be extremely durable, barely changing at all. As for the coils support layer, steel springs have a long track record for durability. Overall, we dont see a weak link in terms of construction that would cause us to doubt the resilience and longevity of the Purple 4 mattress.
What Are Some Complaints From Customers
These mattresses are heavy and a common customer complaint is that they can be difficult to move. Purple mattresses start at about 70 pounds and can go up to 202 pounds shipping weight for the Hybrid Premier California King. So, take advantage of the company’s free white- glove service and get help setting up the mattress in your home.
Besides complaints of the mattress being “too firm” for some, other issues can be a lack of edge support in the Original mattress . Also, you’ll be paying more for those high-tech materials than other foam mattresses.

Purple Vs The Purple Hybrid Premier
Previously called the Purple 3 and Purple 4, the Purple Hybrid Premier is the most luxurious Purple mattress. Instead of a 2 gel grid as found in the original Purple, it boasts either a 3 or 4 grid layer. This extra cushion means a softer feel and greater pressure relief. We prefer the Hybrid Premier for heavier sleepers and side sleepers who like a softer surface.
The original Purple utilizes foam in its base layer while the Purple Hybrid Premier uses innerspring coils. This difference means the flagship Purple better isolates motion transfer while the Premier is cooler and bouncier. The original Purple is more affordable.
My Purple Mattress Complaints
So this could either be a pro or a con, but the Purple has a super unique feel that might not appeal to everyone. If youre after a traditional feel, Id go with an innerspring mattress instead. Additionally, this bed has pretty high motion transfer, so if youre easily disturbed by a restless partner, Id check out one of our best mattresses for couples instead.

Construction And Materials Comparison
The materials used to construct a mattress impact its performance, feel, and longevity. Learning the ins and outs of mattress design can help you identify what type of mattress is best for you.
As you read more about mattresses, youll often come across a few key terms related to mattress construction. The comfort system includes the top layer or layers of the mattress, which contribute directly to the feel of the bed. Under the comfort system is a thicker section called the support core, which provides a sturdy base for the mattress.
All-foam mattresses tend to have comfort systems made of memory foam, polyfoam, or other pressure-relieving materials, and a support layer made of polyfoam. By contrast, hybrid comfort systems can be made of latex, foam, or fibers, but the support layers are made with steel coils. Airbeds, which differ from temporary air mattresses, have air-filled chambers in the support core and additional comfort layers on top.
Average Weight Sleepers 130 Lbs 230 Lbs
Most average-weight sleepers should find the original Purple to be a great mattress for back sleeping . Side sleepers who are on the heavier side of the spectrum should be heavy enough to collapse the gel grid and enjoy pressure relief around the shoulder and hip, but lighter-weight folks will probably feel that the bed is too firm in this position. Average-weight stomach sleepers should enjoy the Purples supportive nature.

Purple Plus Mattress: Prices And Sizes
The Purple Plus is now the fourth mattress in the brands range for teens and adults, but its fifth overall if you count the Kids Mattress too. The Plus sits between the entry level Purple and the Purple Hybrid . The Purple Hybrid Premier remains the most expensive.
How much does the Purple Plus mattress cost? Unbelievably, it’s already included among the latest Purple mattress deals with up to $100 off. Without an offer, the full pricing and list of sizes available to buy is as follows:
- Purple Plus twin: $1,099
- Purple Plus Cal king: $2,099
- Purple Plus split king: $2,598
