Is It Good To Sleep On A Hard Mattress

Who On Earth Is A Combination Sleeper

Floor Sleeping: More Supportive than Mattress for Back Pain (Decompression Technique) – Dr Mandell

The majority of us are combination sleepers. In other words, we are not strictly limited to one sleeping position. We would start sleeping on our right side, then switch to sleeping on our back, then turn to the left side etc. etc. If you also belong to this category, again, a medium-firm memory foam mattress suits you best!

Drawbacks Of Harder Mattresses

The change from a softer to a firmer mattress might at first feel quite uncomfortable. This typically gets less conspicuous over time.

For people suffering from specific back issues like scoliosis and arthritis, a firmer mattress might make the pain worse. For this reason, it is important to try various mattresses before you buy them.

Choosing The Best Mattress For Lower Back Pain

Sleeping on the wrong mattress can cause or worsen lower back pain. Lack of support from a mattress reinforces poor sleeping posture, strains muscles and does not help keep the spine in alignment, all of which contribute to low back pain.

Sleep comfort is also sacrificed if a mattress does not match one’s individual preferences. A mattress that provides both comfort and back support helps reduce low back pain, allowing the structures in the spine to really rest and rejuvenate during the night.

With the vast variety of mattresses on the market, choosing the right mattress can be difficult. The following practical guidelines are designed to help patients with low back pain choose the best mattress for both back support and sleep comfort:

  • Personal preference should ultimately determine what mattress is best. There is no single mattress style or type that works for all people with low back pain. Any mattress that helps someone sleep without pain and stiffness is the best mattress for that individual. Patients with low back pain should choose the mattress that meets their standards for comfort and support and allows them to get a good nights sleep.

Dont Forget To Factor In Your Weight

Again, dont forget to take your weight into the calculation. If youre on the heavy side and you sleep on your stomach on a firm bed, your spine is going to be pushed up by your belly. This is not good. If you have a big belly and youre a stomach sleeper, you should allow your belly to sink in a little into the mattress so that your spine stays as straight as possible. So, a medium-firm mattress may be the better option for such a person. In contrast, if youre a light-weight individual and you sleep on your stomach, a firmer mattress would be the better option.

Why Does A New Mattress Feel Firm

Some types of mattresses feel firm when theyre brand new, and they can take some time to settle. This is especially true for memory foam. Some online companies compress their beds in a box for shipping. When a company does this, youll find that it will already be soft.

However, if your bed arrives fully intact, expect a bit of an adjustment period. It might be 30 days or more. Just like when you buy shoes and have to break them in to get rid of that new feeling, the same holds true for this type of product.

Why Do We Get Comfortable With An Improper Sleeping Posture

Techniques for a good night’s sleep. Do it when you get into bed. Keep yourself healthy

A comfortable sleeping position may not be always an ideal one, but why do we get comfortable with an improper sleeping posture in the first place? The answer lies in the inherent nature of the human body.

The human body, you see, is very adaptive. It automatically adjusts itself to counter any misalignment. If your body is not aligned properly, it will position itself in such a way as to counter any prevailing misalignment.

Comfort, simply put, can be an adaptive response, and may not be necessarily good for your health.

    Advantages Of A Soft Mattress

A softer mattress is usually recommended for those who are experiencing back pain on a standard mattress, or those who have pre-existing back problems. Theyre also recommended for lighter individuals as a harder mattress can end up not compressing for them at all.

Softer mattresses are generally better for those who sleep on their side, as they better cushion the shoulders and hips. On the side, a softer mattress better aligns the spine, too.

Is Your Hard Bed Giving You Back Ache

For decades, back pain sufferers have been told they will get better by sleeping on a hard mattress.

It might not be comfortable but there’s no gain without pain, the experts have claimed.

But now a study has overturned the long-held belief that having firm support is good for you.

It found that those with bad backs were twice as likely to improve by using a medium-firm mattress.

Having ‘a bit of give’ in the mattress resulted in less pain and made it easier for sufferers to get out of bed in the morning.

They even needed to take fewer painkillers compared with back pain victims who were sleeping on firm mattresses.

Doctors and physiotherapists specialising in back care say the findings will revolutionise the lives of back pain sufferers.

They will also change the shopping habits of millions – currently, threequarters of orthopaedic physicians recommend firm mattresses.

Bender said: ‘The one question every physiotherapist is asked by patients with back pain is, “What kind of mattress is best?”

‘Until now we didn’t really have an answer. For the first time this research gives us good evidence on which to base our advice.

‘The most important thing is to make sure your mattress feels comfortable and this research shows you don’t have to buy a rock-hard mattress to get some relief from back pain.’

More than 300 volunteers tested mattresses rated as ‘firm’ or ‘medium-firm’. They were unaware of the type of mattress they were being asked to test.

Dont Sleep On A Mattress Thats Too Soft Or Too Hard

What Does a Latex Mattress Topper Mean for Your Good Night ...

Goldilocks was onto something when she picked Baby Bears just right bed.

A mattress thats too soft will cause your back or hips to sag and your spine to fall out of alignment, which can lead to significant pain. A mattress thats too firm will put too much pressure on your joints, especially if you sleep on your side or your back.

Thats why if you want to reduce your back pain in bed, you need a mattress that offers support but that also contours to your body to provide pressure relief and relieve pain.

That being said, theres no one-size-fits-all-best mattress for back pain. Plus, there are plenty of different materials to choose from. So be sure youre investing in a mattress made from suitable materials for your unique needs.

    Should You Get An Adjustment

It is a very wise idea to get a wellness adjustment from your chiropractor before you go mattress shopping. This can help relieve pain and help you have better posture and body support while you sleep. Ask your chiropractor for advice on sleeping positions, as well as recommendations for mattresses. Not only is your chiropractor a back expert, but he has probably heard a lot of recommendations from his patients who suffered from mattress-induced back pain.

    Use A Mattress Topper

Buying a topper is one of the quickest, most effective, and cheapest ways to make a hard surface softer. By adding a supportive layer to the top of your bed, you can enhance pressure point relief and contouring. There are different materials available, including latex, memory foam, wool, cotton, feather, polyfoam, and down alternative.

The most popular option is memory foam. If you go with this variety, get something that is under two inches thick and a lower density for extra softness.

    Avoid Heavy Meals Before Bedtime

Bed firmness? Sleeping on hard surfaces or soft surfaces? Effect on hips, shoulders, and back?

This might be hard to follow as people tend to have an ever-changing lifestyle and or a cultural thing where they have dinner with the whole family very close to bedtime. Having a late dinner or any food can activate your digestive systems and even if you are able to relax, your body will still process that food and in the end lower your quality of sleep. In addition, limit the time to eat, at least one hour before bedtime. Nothing is wrong with consuming food at night, just do not take it at the last minute before you jump into bed. The limit is not to eat within 4 hours of going to bed. Since it takes about 4 hours to digest food, give it a 4-hour gap from the time you eat until bedtime. Why is that? The answer is that during sleep, your body releases growth hormone 30 minutes after you sleep. This hormone is also produced when you exercise. This is a hormone that plays a role in growth and is responsible for breaking down fat. That is why children are often recommended to get enough sleep because the more sleep, the growth hormone produced will increase and is very useful for the growth and development of children.

    Does It Treat Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that involves your sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back to your hips, buttocks, and each leg. Its often caused by a bulging or herniated disc.

Like back pain, sciatica may be improved by sleeping on firmer mattresses. A softer surface can worsen sciatica because it rounds your back and stresses out your joints.

However, theres no hard evidence that sleeping on the floor treats sciatica. The reported benefits are anecdotal. If you have sciatica, talk to a doctor or physical therapist before trying floor-sleeping.

This Is What Affects The Hardness Of A Mattress

Apart from individual preferences, two major factors affect the hardness of a mattress: your preferred sleeping position and body weight.

  • Preferred sleeping position
  • Three main sleeping positions exist, i.e stomach, back, and side sleepers. Each position will affect how you press against your mattress. The two major pressure points when lying down are around the hip and the shoulder area.

The best mattress permits a bit of sinking in these parts for the right spine alignment and even body weight distribution.

  • Body weight
  • When lying down on the mattress, how soft or hard it feels will depend on how much pressure the body will exert onto the top surface.

Provided with the same mattress, someone bulky will naturally press more against the surface of the mattress than a lighter individual.

Because of that, lighter people choose medium to soft types while heavier people prefer harder mattresses. Stomach and back sleepers usually love a harder mattress.

This will help provide the right resistance in their pressure points and proper alignment of the spine. The best spine alignment is often got from medium to soft mattresses.

If you are a side sleeper, a very hard surface can leave the legs and lower back dangling in the air. It will exert needless pressure in the hips and shoulder and results in you waking up with aches in these parts.

Invest In A New Divan Base

A solid platform base will make your mattress feel a lot firmer. This is because the solid, flat surface provides a lot more support for your mattress but has no ‘give’.

We suggest replacing the solid base with a sprung base because they offer more plush support. This is because the base gently cradles the mattress while you sleep rather than a sturdy flat surface.

Benefits & Drawbacks Of Firm Mattresses

Firm mattresses have many benefits and support is chief among them. Firm mattresses are more supportive than soft mattresses and hold up the body, rather than letting it sink in too far. Lying on a firm mattress, most people will feel like they are sleeping on top of the mattress, and they should have no real issues moving around on the mattress.

This also makes firm mattresses cooler than soft mattresses. Lying more on top of the mattress, more of the body is exposed to the air that is moving around in the bedroom.

However, while firm mattresses offer great support, they arent the best when it comes to pressure relief. Side sleepers might feel some serious pressure on their shoulders and hips when they lie on a firm mattress. Also, while comfort is subjective, many people dont find firm mattresses to be as comfortable.
