Which Pillow Block Configuration Is Best For Your Application

Pillow blocks for Thomson RoundRail linear bearings provide self alignment and greater tolerance of reduced parallelism compared to square rail guides. Theyre also easier and less expensive to install without compromise to important performance requirements. Pillow block bearings can be installed with either continuous or end supports, they handle moment loads well, and offer low drag and excellent smoothness.

Below are the available Thomson pillow block configurations with properties based on our selection of RoundRail linear bearings. With some exceptions, most configurations can be combined. For example, a closed, twin, adjustable standard is available.

Open or Closed. Open pillow blocks are for use with continuous supported shafts, while closed pillow blocks are for use in end-supported applications.

Single or Twin. All pillow blocks come with the Linear Ball Bushing® Bearing installed. Single pillow blocks contain one linear bearing, while twin pillow blocks are longer and contain two linear bearings.

Adjustable or Non-Adjustable. Pillow block bearings are also available with adjustable housings or fixed, non-adjustable housings. Adjustable pillow blocks have an adjustment screw, or screws in the case of a twin pillow block, which allows for adjustment of the radial play, or lash, between the shaft and the linear bearing.

What Are The Rolling Contact Bearing

The term rolling contact bearings refers to the wide variety of bearings that use spherical balls or some other type of roller between the stationary and the moving elements. The most common type of bearing supports a rotating shaft, resisting purely radial loads or a combination of radial and axial loads.

Inch Linear Bearings And Metric Linear Bearings

    Excel Linear Bearings

EXCEL Linear Bearings are designed to fit into precision bores while providing long life. Precision hardened and ground bearing plates with ball conforming tracks are contained in a molded thermoplastic housing.

EXCEL Linear Bearing – High Load, Self-Aligning, Open Sealed

    LBB Linear Bearings

LBB Linear Bearings are used in lower load applications where self alignment is not required. The precision fit between the bearing and shaft is built into the bearing a result of the solid steel shell. A molded plastic bearing ball retainer is assembled inside a hardened and ground shell.

LBB Linear Bearing – Open Sealed, Non-Self-Aligning, Steel Shell

    Pillow Blocks

EXCEL Linear Pillow Blocks Simply the mounting of Nook Linear Bearings. Available with EXCEL Bearings to fit shafts from 1/4 to 2 inch and 10 to 50mm. Provides the precision bearing bores necessary for linear bearing installation.

    • Manufactured from precision machined, thick walled, extruded aluminum.
    • Supplied with lip seals to keep out dirt and debris resulting in smoother operation and longer life.
    • Mounting surface to center line dimension is held to +/- 0.001 inch. Bearings will self-align up to +/- 0.5°.

What Makes A Bearing Plain And Self

    igubal® Self-Aligning Bearings Overview

Bearings can mediate friction in two main ways: through mechanical parts like balls that roll, such as in ball bearings, or through non-mechanical parts like plastic, which can contain materials such as solid lubricants that eliminate the need of external grease and deter damage to its part. The latter mechanism, which is non-mechanical, is what is referred to as a plain bearing.

Self-aligning refers to the fact that the bearing can handle various types of motion, such as tilting, oscillating and linear motion, not just axial in the case of a rotating shaft. The key here is that something needs to be kept in some kind of horizontal, vertical or planed alignment. If that alignment or angle is not kept perfectly consistent, the bearing structure will compensate for that movement, excess friction will be avoided and the machine can continue to function without failure.

Therefore, a self-aligning plain bearing is a bearing with no mechanical parts that compensates for misalignment in a bearing system.

Self-aligning bearings are made of two pieces. First, they have an inner spherical ball. The shaft or spindle goes through the inside of that spherical ball. The latter piece is fitted in a larger piece called a housing, which can be in various designs. Some inner pieces are removable and some are fixed.

    Where Did Self

Self-aligning plain bearings come from their metal counterparts invented in 1838 by James Nasmyth. The inventor noticed that rotating shafts would end up unevenly placed inside the supporting bearings on each end. Uneven placement would take place due to accidental change in the level of supports of the bearings, situation in dark places or difficulty accessing the parts. The latter two would lead to uneven installation . In these situations, increased friction, heat and even fires would occur.

To resolve this issue, James Nasmyth therefore invented a self-aligning metal bearing. If and when the system encounters misalignment, the bearing compensates for this error by allowing a give in the directions the motion occurs without breaking the housing or gaining excess friction. Motion compensated for would include oscillating and linear motion in these systems.

Self-aligning bearings have come a long way since 1838 as more material and design options are now available, including high-performance plastic spherical balls and housings that are self-lubricating, corrosion resistant, lightweight and maintenance-free.
