Has Purple Mattress Ever Been Sued
Our review of the origin of Purple mattresses would be incomplete if we didnt look at any lawsuits that this company has been subjected to in the past. From our findings, the Purple brand has been involved in one case. The funny thing here is that Purple is the one who filed a lawsuit against Monahan, the owner of Honest Mattress Reviews and the CEO of GhostBeds.
A few years ago, Purple mattresses came packaged with a white powder. According to Purple, the purpose of that white powder was to prevent the bed from sticking to the pillows during shipment. However, Monahan from Honest Mattress Reviews thought otherwise. According to him, the powder was a health risk to sleepers.
Purple retaliated in 2017 by filing a lawsuit against Monahan, alleging that this website aimed to tarnish their brand reputation and promote that of GhostBed. After the case was heard, it was determined that Monahans claims were just a smear campaign. Surprisingly, Purple stopped using that white powder all of a sudden.
Purple may have dealt with the dreaded white powder. However, their mattresses also contain a fiberglass fire sock. Therefore, their beds are not 100% safe.

What Complaints Have Sleepers Made Against Purple Beds
Purple mattresses are far from flawless. There are a lot of complaints that sleepers have made in the past few years. These beds tend to sag prematurely. Thats mainly because the materials used are of inferior quality. Even though its made here in the US, Purple needs to upgrade to high-quality materials.
Purple mattresses are known to off-gas for longer than most typical beds. The edge support of these beds is terrible and heavy people may have trouble using the entire mattress. Even though there are luxurious mattresses out there that cost more than Purple, if you compare this brand to competitors on its level, their prices are slightly higher.
Another complaint that has been made against this mattress is the grid layer. It appeals only to some sleepers. A good number of people find the grid layer to be uncomfortable.

So when in doubt we defer to the made in tag that they have to attach to the mattress, which is usually called the law tag. Fun fact about the law tag, even though it says do not remove under penalty of law, you can cut it off it it bugs you. That tag does not apply to consumers.

The Purples comfort layers are made up of 2 inches of Purple Grid on top of a 3.5-inch polyfoam layer. Its support core is made of 4 inches of high-density polyfoam . Combined, these layers excel at providing pressure relief to sleepers. The cover is made of a polyester-viscose blended fabric. Materials What Is The Purple Bed Made Of
What makes the Purple mattress unlike most other bed-in-a-box mattresses is the materials and construction of the bed. The top layer is not a foam, but a polymer grid paired with two additional layers of foam. Creating a 3 layer mattress that is just shy of 10 inches thick. Combine with the soft and breathable cover makes for a mattress unlike any of its competition and the best mattress of its kind.
Purple Mattress Smart Comfort Grid Top Layer
The material that really sets this bed apart is clearly the much raved about Purple Smart Comfort Grid. This top layer is a patented 2 inches of hyper-elastic polymer materials formed into a grid structure. This unique looking and feeling layer is meant for two main purposes. Comfort. Which is done by focusing directly on pressure relief by alleviating pressure points. This is done through the grid providing optimal support and contour as well as even weight distribution.
The other advantage to the Purple smart grid is also sleeping cool and comfortable all night long too. Because the top layer features a grid construction, opposed to a solid piece of foam, you have a surface that circulates air and dissipates heat. Ideally working to create a temperature regulated surface that is contouring yet supportive. Giving you a mattress that checks two of the biggest boxes of what people look for in a mattress.

Purple Mattress Cover
What Are Purple Mattresses Made Of
Purple mattresses are mainly made out of poly foam. There is a stretchy cooling material on the cover that is made of viscose, polyester and Lycra. This cover promotes the breathability of the Purple bed. Beneath the cover is a proprietary gel grid. Its purpose is to offer pressure relief to a sleepers body. This technology makes you feel like you are floating on the mattress.
A transition layer of polyfoam is meant to cushion heavy sleepers. Beneath that is a high-density polyfoam and a non-bottom that ensures the mattress firmly holds to the frame. Due to this design, Purple mattresses should not be flipped because the grid is only on one side.

Motion Isolation And Noise
Surprisingly, the Original Purple mattress does a pretty good job of limiting motion transfer. You might not think so, given how responsive and sort of bouncy the polymer top layer is, but the bed actually passed our tests easily. It also doesnt make any noise, virtually none, which is standard with most new online beds nowadays.
Nectar Vs Original Purple Comparison
The Nectar and Purple mattresses have very different constructions and materials, which is most evident in their comfort layers. The Nectars comfort layers feature multiple layers of memory foam, while the Purple features a hyper-elastic gel polymer.

These materials create different feels. Thanks to its memory foam, the Nectar has a slow-moving feel that offers plenty of pressure relief and body contouring. Once again, the Purple is bouncy, responsive, and simultaneously squishy and firm.
The firmness ranking for these mattresses will depend a bit on the weight of the sleeper in question, but we ranked both of these beds around a 6.5/10.
The Nectar and Purple are also very similar in terms of price, although the Purple costs around $100 less.

Benefits Of Sleeping On A Purple Mattress
When it comes to the benefits youll see in our Purple mattress review, clearly great sleep is at the top of your list. But how youll get that from the above listed materials? Below we will go through how the Purple bed will feel and perform. Giving you a first hand look at how it works for side sleepers, stomach sleepers, back sleepers and combination sleepers. Even how the Purple mattress works for bigger and taller sleepers too.
We will also detail how this polymer gridded bed performs for motion isolation, sleeping cool as well as edge support. Though the Purple mattress sets itself apart from memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses and hybrid mattresses, there will be similarities that come through in the benefits it offers.
Does The Purple Mattress Sleep Hot
The Purple bed scores an 8 out of 10 for cooling, meaning that the mattress does a great job of regulating your body temperature and keeping you cool throughout the night. This is due to the structure of the foam layers which have a large, open cell structure designed for promoting airflow and breathability.
The responsive knit cover on the top layer of the mattress is also a breathable design that pushes air away from your body, so you wont have to worry about night sweats with this bed.

Back Sleepers & Stomach Sleepers
Back sleepers must also get some ample support for your lumbar area and a little bit of pressure relief. For heavier sleepers, you may want to opt for an extra firm mattress since Purple could feel too soft, and these sleepers could end up sinking into the mattress too deeply. If youre between 130-230 points, this should be an appropriate choice for you. Still, preferences will definitely vary from person to person.
The problem of support is getting more prevalent in stomach sleepers. They will definitely need an even more firm foundation to avoid the build-up of pressure points which can cause strain to shoulders, necks or lower backs. Being a stomach sleeper who weighs more more than 130 pounds will definitely require the most firm bed.
Average Weight Sleepers 130 Lbs 230 Lbs
Most average-weight sleepers should find the original Purple to be a great mattress for back sleeping . Side sleepers who are on the heavier side of the spectrum should be heavy enough to collapse the gel grid and enjoy pressure relief around the shoulder and hip, but lighter-weight folks will probably feel that the bed is too firm in this position. Average-weight stomach sleepers should enjoy the Purples supportive nature.

Purple Orignal Mattress Vs Lull Mattress
|Hot Sleepers||Couples, or those who co-sleep|
The Lull is a memory foam mattress with a similar medium-firm firmness level as the Purple. The Lull has a softer, more cuddly feel that falls between sleeping on and in the surface, while the Purple contours to the body and offers a floating sensation. Both mattresses are best for average-weight to lightweight folks, although we think the Lull is slightly better for stomach sleepers and the Purple for side sleepers.
The Purple sleeps much cooler than the Lull and is better for hot sleepers. Both beds dampen motion transfer and are easy to move around upon, making them good for couples. They have a similar price point, so its best to consider what type of feel and sleeping experience youre looking for.
