How To Move A Mattress With A Car

Load Mattress Onto Vehicle

How to transport a mattress safely on top of any car or suv

Depending on the type of vehicle you are using, you may want to do this a few different ways.

Van or Truck

If you are using or renting a van or truck, then you will want your mattress to either lay flat against a fairly solid surface so you dont compromise the inner support, or upright flat against the side of the vehicle wall. If you place anything up against it, make sure there are no sharp points or angles, or any other type of heavy, narrow, hard surface that could cause damage.

Pickup

Most pickup beds are large enough to comfortably fit a queen size or smaller mattress flat within the bed, or resting upon the wheel wells. A king size may need to lean against the side, possibly with the tailgate down- but again, it should set within it nicely for transport.

Make sure nothing is below or above the mattress during transport to keep from compromising your plastic or causing any punctures to the mattress itself.

If you are going to transport your mattress on top of a car, then you will want to make sure to place it up there carefully to keep from ripping the bag on any luggage racks you have, or even bending something on your car you dont want bent. Many small cars may be too narrow for larger, queen or king sized beds, so be sure to take into consideration size before you commit to this plan.

Load It Onto The Vehicle

Now comes the fun part getting the mattress out of the house and into your vehicle. Keep in mind that even with the protective bag you should still handle your investment with care. Getting it through the obstacles of the outdoors and into a car, truck or van can still cause damage if you drop it or allow anything sharp to poke or pierce it.

Car

Transporting a queen mattress on the roof of your car is challenging, but doable. Secure it to the roof carefully and work the ropes through your open windows.

Once its on the roof, take extra care in stabilizing it with rope. You should measure the amount of rope in advance to make sure theres plenty to hold everything in place. On average, youll need about 16-17 feet.

The first step in this process is putting the rope on the top of the mattress and wrapping it both lengthwise and across. You can wrap it underneath your car, and then through the open windows .

To be extra safe, you can complete this process two times.

Wondering why you should leave the drivers side free of ropes? If you put them through all the windows, you might have a pretty hard time opening the any of the doors!

Van

If the seats in your van are removable, the moving process becomes infinitely easier. If your bed is exceptionally large and the van you have isnt, please see the instructions above for how to move your bed to the top of the car.

Pickup

Truck

Instructions for transporting a bed via truck are the same as a van.

Is It Safe To Drive With A Mattress On Your Roof

Valerie Johnston

If you bought a mattress at the local mattress store, you may be wondering how to transport it home. While some stores offer delivery, others do not. Tying a mattress to the roof of your car is an option, but it should be done carefully. By properly tying down your mattress, you will ensure your safety, and the safety of those around you.

To safely transport a mattress follow a few simple steps:

  • If you plan on purchasing or moving a mattress, make sure you have the proper materials. The tools you will need include: a mattress bag, packaging tape, rope, scissors, work gloves, and a little extra help.

  • Once you have all of the tools, wrap the mattress in plastic. Tape the plastic down so there are no loose ends flying around. The wind from the roads or highway can easily rip through the plastic if it is not properly secure.

  • After the mattress is secure in the plastic, place the mattress on the roof. Center the mattress in the middle and put the rope over the length of the mattress. Secure the front end of the mattress, and then the other end of the mattress. Pull the rope tight so there is no extra slack.

  • Will My Warranty Protect My Mattress

Most mattresses provide limited warranties with around 10 years of coverage. For instance, when you purchase a Casper mattress, it comes with a limited manufacturers warranty which covers manufacturing defects in a mattress for 10 years. The warranty becomes void of physical damages such as cuts, tears, stains, or liquid damages that are self-inflicted to the mattress cover or structure after purchase. This is why its important to protect your mattress with a mattress bag and plan your route before moving.

Ensure that the mattress is stored in such a way as not to block your rearview mirror. If thats impossible, then look at another way of moving the mattress.

Can Folding Or Bending A Mattress Damage It

Folding or bending a spring mattress in half damages the structure, which can result in less comfortable sleep or, in extreme cases, a ruined mattress. But polyurethane-based memory foam, like the kind used in Caspers mattress-in-a-box, has great flexibility and suppleness that allows it to spring back to shape even after being folded or rolled. Like memory foam, latex can also be folded in half and will retake its original shape within a few hours.

    How To Move Your Mattress

    • Moving Truck/Van: If possible, lay the mattress flat in the cargo space. Be sure not to stack the mattress on top of anything else and vice versa. If standing your mattress up, lean the mattress on its side against the support wall. Use nylon rope or ratchet straps to secure it against the support rails. If the ratchet strap is too short, connect two to make one large strap.
    • Pickup Truck: Position the mattress as flat as possible in the truck bed. Secure one end of the nylon ropes or straps to the D-rings, wrapping them over the mattress, and ratcheting or tying the remaining slack. If your mattress is larger than the truck bed, you may need to leave the tailgate open. Secure the back end of the mattress with rope or a strap in an X to prevent sliding.
    • Car/SUV : Lay the mattress flat on top of the luggage rack and check for rips or tears in the mattress bag. Wrap the nylon rope or ratchet straps horizontally across the front, center, and back of the mattress. Tie the mattress to the rack using a sturdy knot like the truckers hitch or one of these other popular knots used for moving.
    • Car/SUV : If your car doesnt have a luggage rack, lay the mattress flat on the car roof and check for rips or tears. Wrap the nylon ropes or ratchet straps across the mattresss body in the front, center and back . Pass the ropes through the front passenger door jams, back passenger windows and back up to the roof, securing the mattress to the car.

How To Move And Store Your Mattress

Move the bed to your cars roof. You can do this by yourself if its a smaller-sized mattress. But if youre dealing with a larger mattress, get someone to assist you.

Consider The Size Of Your Mattress

You may think that the larger mattress the more challenging the move. But this isnt always the case. Take, for example, a split king size mattress and a queen size mattress. Although a split king size mattress may be larger when set up, it splits into two parts, while a queen size mattress doesnt. So a queen size mattress could actually be harder to move through narrow hallways and around corners. Its important to consider factors like this when planning to move your mattress.

To avoid any unnecessary surprises, be sure to measure your mattress before attempting to move it. Maneuvering the mattress and moving it out of your home will be a struggle if it turns out to be even an inch longer than you planned.

    Always Focus On The Mattress:

Have your eyes fixed on the bed and request your passenger to do the same. The reason is to ensure you are aware of whatever happens quicker. It could be a slacked rope, damaged plastic. Or the mattress could get out of position. When such happens, stop the car immediately and make the necessary adjustment.
