Mattresses Explained: Memory Foam Sprung Latex And Hybrid
Pocket-sprung mattresses have been the most popular for many years now. However, there are plenty of challengers in the shape of memory foam and latex. The modern-day mattress can arrive in a box, and some even overnight! There is no obvious best mattress type, what works for you will depend on your needs. Read on to find out the differences between Memory Foam, Sprung, Latex and Hybrid mattresses.
What Kind Of Mattress Should You Buy
There are a handful of popular mattress types to choose from.
- Memory foam: When most people think of a bed-in-a-box, they think of memory foam mattresses. These are mattresses with multiple layers of foam that support and contour your body. However, all-foam mattresses tend to trap heat due to the construction.
- Latex foam: This is usually preferred by people looking for an eco-friendly, cooler, and more responsive foam than traditional memory foam.
- Hybrid: These beds combine one of the above foams with spring coils. The coils help with motion transfer and edge support, making them an excellent option for couples. The coils also help with airflow for a cooler sleep.
- Spring: These are your more traditional beds, also called innerspring or coil mattresses. Due to the responsive coils, they offer good support, edge support, cooling, and durability. However, they are generally more expensive and primarily found in showrooms and not online.
- Pillow-top: Pillow-tops are usually associated with innerspring mattresses but can be found on any above options. This is the smart solution for those who like a soft, cushy feel.
- Adjustable or air beds: These beds use an air pump to adjust the firmness of your mattress to suit your needs. They are among the most expensive options but may be an ideal long-term solution since your firmness needs change with time. Couples with drastically different firmness needs would also benefit from an adjustable air bed.

How To Test For Support In A Mattress:
The most important factor in finding the correct mattress is proper support. You need the mattress to push up on your body to counteract your body weight. So that means a hard, firm, stone-like mattress, right? Wrong.
Your body isnt a straight line. Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, your body has curves, and a mattress must come up to support the curves and arches of your body . Consider the image below to illustrate:
Youll notice that the mattress dips down around her shoulders and hips, but her spine is in proper alignment. If the mattress were too hard, her hips would be pushed up and her shoulders would be pushed up, and her spine would not be straight. If youre in this position for too long, you can wake up with a backache.
Additionally, if you keep changing positions to try to keep your back in alignment, youre not getting into the deeper stages of sleep, which causes you to wake up tired. The same exact consequences occur if a mattress is too soft, and youre in it like a hammock. You want a mattress to contour to the shape of your body to hold it in its neutral alignment.

Our Review Of The Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress
Pros: Made with eco-friendly materials, 100-night risk-free trial, good edge support, excellent heat dissipation, the plush comfort is ideal for side sleepers
Cons: Held on to its new bed smell, not the best for stomach or back sleepers, failed motion transfer tests
The Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress is also our pick for the best soft mattress, an attribute that makes it ideal for side sleepers, who usually find a bed with some give to be the most comfortable. Additionally, we think it’s a good solution for petite sleepers and older individuals who may not have as much natural cushioning as they once did and could benefit from the soothing comfort of a soft mattress.
Side sleepers will appreciate the zoned pressure relief built into the foam layers of the . The second foam layer has three ergonomic zones that are firmer around the waist, hips, and lower back and softer under the shoulders. The following foam layer features contoured cuts designed to reinforce the second layer. And, the hybrid’s springs ensure your body is adequately supported while adding a level of durability. A firm border of foam helps the bed’s edge support.
I tend to overheat in bed, but I never felt hot when sleeping on the , which is impressive since I tested the mattress in the summer. When I used the bathroom in the night, the spot where I was sleeping was cooler when I returned, which helped me get back to sleep faster.

The Best Hybrid Mattresses
Price: From £999 | Buy now from Simba Sleep
It might cost an arm and a leg, but the Simba Hybrid Pro is the comfiest bed-in-a-box mattress weve ever tested. What separates it from its rivals? For a start, its uppermost layer is made from British wool, which offers better temperature regulation than the foam used in most hybrids.
And thats not all thats different. The mattress also adds an additional layer of microsprings compared to the original Simba Hybrid, which makes it both bouncy and more breathable. We found the mattress exceedingly comfortable in a range of sleeping positions. In fact, we liked it so much that we didnt want to go back to using our regular, everyday mattress.
The fact the Hybrid Pro comes with a 200-night trial rather than the 100 nights offered by many of its rivals means you have the luxury of being able to try it for a full six months before making a decision.

What The Comfiest Uk Mattress 2021
Our number one best mattress is the luxurious Simba Hybrid Pro. The proud winner of the T3 Award 2021 for best mattress, it delivers sumptuous comfort and strong cooling tech. It’s not cheap though, so if you’re on a tighter budget we’d recommend the Emma Original. A double T3 Award-winner , this memory foam mattress is also extremely comfortable and great value to boot. If neither of those take your fancy, we have plenty of other options for you to explore too.
How often should you change your mattress? More often than you might think: SleepFoundation.org recommends upgrading every 6-8 years under normal conditions. It might be an investment, but it’s one worth making if you can afford it. Studies have found that newer mattresses can significantly improve your sleep quality and reduce aches and pains. And even if you clean your mattress regularly, sweat, dead skin cells and dust mites build up to frankly horrifying levels fairly quickly.
The Best Mattress For Hot Sleepers
The tester: Peter Martin, Strategist senior editor
How I sleep: On my stomach, although I occasionally try to sleep on my back after having once read that its better for you. I prefer the coziness of sleeping with the covers on, but I run pretty hot, so I typically end up under only the sheet, if not on top of it, except on the coldest nights. My wife tends to be the opposite, doubling up blankets and stacking them on the comforter so that her side of the bed looks like the crust of a fancy wool pastry.
The fine print: Eight Sleeps mattresses ship for free and come with a 100-day trial period if you change your mind within that time, returns are free. The mattress itself has a ten-year warranty, and the techy components are covered for two years.
The tl dr: There are lots of mattress brands that promise temperature-regulating abilities. But none quite deliver on that promise like Eight Sleep, which is the only mattress the Strategist has tested that has shown any quantifiable ability to make those who sleep on it actually feel warmer or cooler. Setup takes longer than a traditional mattress, though, and there is ongoing maintenance required to keep everything functioning. If youre not concerned about temperature and just looking for an all-foam mattress, you can probably find cheaper models that are just as comfortable.

Motion Isolation & Sex
A feature to consider if you share a bed with a partner is the motion isolation. If you or your partner move around a bit throughout the night, this could be disturbing for a light sleeper. However, mattress types with strong motion isolation could solve this issue and allow two people to sleep in peace without the odd disturbance.
Additionally, as most people are a bit sensitive to noise when they sleep, you might want a quiet product. Hearing coils creak when your partner gets up to go to the bathroom could interrupt your sleep and leave you irritated in the middle of the night. Certain hybrid mattresses can offer quality motion isolation, and memory foam is known for providing this feature as well, allowing you to keep your intimate moments private.
Otty Pure Hybrid Bamboo And Charcoal Mattress
Best mattress for if you find yourself overheating when you sleep
Limited edge support Cover needs to be dry cleaned
If you struggle to regulate body temperature while sleeping and suffer overheating even in the winter, youll probably love the OTTY Pure Bamboo and Charcoal mattress. This mattress stays cool even on sweaty summer nights, so its a top pick for hot sleepers. Its also great if you want a mattress thats a little on the firmer side, but with a supportive top layer.
At 25cm, the OTTY Pure mattress is about average for this type of mattress. It has a removable cover for an added layer of protection, but note that it is dry clean only. With up to 2,000 encapsulated pocket springs, as well as two memory foam layers, its also pretty comfortable. Our reviewer had been experiencing a lot of lower back pain prior to testing enough to make getting out of bed or sitting at her difficult but she noticed that the pain lessened when she started sleeping on the OTTY Pure.
As for the keep-cool factor: the OTTY Pure is a very breathable mattress. It had no trouble keeping our reviewer warm through April this year, but it also helped her sleep quite comfortably through the June heatwave. Thats all thanks to the charcoal, which claims to regulate temperature, and the airflow system, which keeps the mattress fresh.
