Where To Buy A New Mattress

Does It Cradle Or Cushion You The Way You Want It To

How To Buy A Mattress – What You Need To Know To Find The Best Bed!

If you like a mattress top to conform to your body, youll probably prefer a memory-foam mattress or a foam-forward hybrid. If you want to feel more held up by the mattress, go for an innerspring. These can feel quite plush with a pillow top or Euro top and still let you move more freely. Many innerspring mattresses also have just enough foam in the upper layers to provide cushioning without dampening the effect of the coils too much. A mattress made of latexa springier type of foam formulated from the sap of a rubber treecan feel somewhere in between a memory-foam and an innerspring mattress.

When Is The Best Time To Buy A Mattress

Buying a new mattress is a big investment, and the best time to buy is obviously when the prices are discounted the most. Luckily, those times come at fairly predictable and frequent times throughout the year for many mattress brands and retail stores.

While not every company will always participate in these major sales, theres a good chance you can find a great mattress deal around these holidays:

  • Black Friday
  • Labor Day
  • New Years

Keep in mind that most mattress sales start up to a week before the holiday and can extend up to a week after the holiday.

You can also expect to save on mattresses around different company events, like grand opening sales, liquidation sales, moving sales and anniversary sales. These arent as predictable so its something to keep an eye out for.

If youre in the market for a new mattress, you might want to sign up for a few company newsletters to get alerts about sales and discounts. You can always unsubscribe later!

How Do I Keep My Mattress Clean

Use ProtectionUsing a mattress protector is a no-brainer to guard against dirt, spills, and normal wear and tear. We developed a water resistent mattress protector that conforms through the sides to keep it pristine. The best part? It wonât compromise the comfort of your bed. Give It a BathWhile we donât recommend trying to wash it yourself, there are plenty of professionals out there who can get the job done. We recommend contacting your local mattress cleaning service and scheduling a convenient home visit. Keep It Smelling FreshTo keep odors in check, air out the mattress by freeing it from the sheets and opening a few windows. For serious smell situations, consider sprinkling baking soda on the cover, then vacuuming it away before putting the sheets back on. Keep Out Dust with Fitted SheetsUse fitted sheets to protect your mattress from dust, dirt, and dead skin. This will help keep your allergies at bay and ensure that dust mites donât find a new home. Rotate Your MattressAlong with regular cleaning, periodically rotate your mattress head-to-foot every six months to make sure it wears evenly. Thereâs no need to flip a Casper mattress â each layer is strategically designed for your comfort and not to be flipped.

What Is The Return Policy

Most online mattresses come with a free trial period of about 100 days or so, if you buy it directly from the company. You might be required to try a mattress for 30 days before you can initiate a return, though. Third-party retailers, such as Amazon, department stores, and mattress stores, might have their own rules, whether you purchased the mattress online or in a brick-and-mortar store.

While sellers will label mattresses as “orthopedic” or “medically-approved,” there is no medical organization that officially certifies mattresses to carry these labels. Mattresses may have orthopedic-friendly features, but no medical group verifies these claims.

Is it better to buy a mattress online or in-store? That’s a complicated question, without a tidy answer. What we can tell you, however, is which mattress retailers are best, according to Consumer Reports members.

The list below includes both online and in-store merchants, and our data shows that people tend to be equally happy purchasing a mattress either way. Among our members, more than 8 in 10 who bought a mattress online and in-store reported being satisfied with their experience.

These are just some of the findings from our Winter 2020 Mattress Retailers Survey, in which more than 4,400 members gave feedback about their recent shopping experiences, both online and in-store.

Members dished about retailers mattress selection, sales service, and customer support, as well as whether floor models were clean and delivery was on time. We also got into price: How much did they pay, how happy they were with that price, and did they haggle?

Using our data, we created ratings for 16 mattress retail chains as well as independent retailers.

Below are the mattress retailers that rank highest for overall satisfaction in our mattress survey.

How Firm Should A Mattress Be

It all comes down to your preferred sleeping position:

Firm: If you sleep on your stomach, a firm mattress will keep your spine aligned.

Medium: If you sleep on your back, it’ll provide support for your spine, back and neck while keeping you comfortable.

Soft: Great for sleeping on your side because it’ll support and contour your body’s curves.

But be warned: we’ve found that most retailers’ firmness claims don’t match the bed being sold. We do body support and stability tests when we test mattresses, so check out our mattress reviews to see what we found.

If you’re a side sleeper, a soft mattress will support your body’s curves.

Check The Guarantee/warranty On Your Mattress

Make sure you know what your rights are if there’s a problem with your mattress. Most guarantees for mattresses won’t cover gradual wear and tear, which leads to loss of support.

You should also check whether theres anything in particular, such as removing labels or using a base other than a recommended one, that would invalidate the guarantee.

How Often To Buy A New Mattress And Pillow For The Best Sleep Possible

Buying your next mattress: What to look for

Sinking into bed every night should feel so good that you practically have a mind-body orgasm. Buying a new mattress and pillow on the right schedule is a huge part of creating this kind of sleep haven. But it can be far too easy to put off these purchases until your mattress and pillow are basically crumbling into heaps of foam and filling.

There are several reasons why its not great to sleep on an ancient mattress or use a pillow that is giving up the ghost. This is how often experts recommend you replace your mattress and pillowand why.

Take Your Body Type Into Consideration

Once you’re familiar with your sleeping position, next is to factor in your weight or BMI. Weight distribution plays a part in how soft or firm you think a bed will feel. For example, a medium mattress will feel more soft to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but Olympic gymnast Simone Biles will likely think that same mattress feels a bit firmer than advertised.

Heavier individuals exert more pressure into a mattress, and as a result, have a more plush experience. So, if you weigh 250 pounds and sleep on your stomach, I’d suggest at least a medium-firm mattress.

People with larger body types should also look into hybrid mattresses. These are beds that include both foam and innersprings. Hybrid mattresses are much more supportive than all-foam beds because of their steel base layer. And in turn, that means they end up lasting longer. Though, if you weigh under 200 pounds, most foam beds should work just fine for you in the long-term.

Why Side Sleeping Can Cause Pain

The 13 Best Places to Buy a Mattress in 2021

As your shoulder collapses into the mattress or gets crunched up to your neck, your spine becomes misaligned and you can experience pain. Your best solution is a medium-firm mattress and one firm pillow.

A mattress topper is another answer. These can improve your sleep without having to buy a new mattress. With a mattress topper, you can also customize the comfort. Most brands offer options from 1-4 inches thick, with different levels of firmness and varying materials. By adding the right additional support and padding, you can wake up refreshed and pain-free.

      Do You Have Back Pain

If youre waking up with back pain, you might want to consider a firmer mattress. Firmer mattresses tend to provide better spinal alignment and support to the lower back, thereby providing relief to back ailments. As firmness is a personal choice, adding comfort foams to firmer sleep surfaces can make your mattress environment soft and cozy, while at the same time retaining back and spinal support. One thing is for sure, you dont want your mattress to feel as hard as concrete. Hard surfaces may relieve back pain, but they cant provide relief to joint pain.

Best Time To Buy A Mattress

Why Your New Mattress Feels Softer Than In Store

Imagine you just visited a mattress store. You try several models, then find the perfect fit for you. It feels comfortable, yet firm enough in the right places to provide the back support you need. You begin to sleep on it and it feels just like it did in the store. The first couple of weeks you sleep like a baby and wake up refreshed! But then you begin to notice something the mattress just feels different. Suddenly you begin waking up to a sore back. The mattress is even beginning to form a dip! You call the store and they explain that the dip is nothing to be worried about. Its normal and there is a depth the dip should not exceed before your warranty kicks in.

Why is it much softer now than it felt in the store when you selected it? Unfortunately, this is the reality for many people who shop at major mattress retailers. The truth is that while the dip is normal, it is very unlikely that you would be able to experience this dip in the store. Your typical mattress store displays rows of mattresses, frequently changed with a new replacement the moment it begins to show signs of any type of wear. The problem with this procedure is that a newer mattress does not feel the same way as it will feel over time. As a result, the products presented in most mattress retail stores do not provide an accurate idea of how your bed will feel over time.

        What Is A Mattress

Essential Guide To Buying A New Mattress Online

This type of mattress was first brought to market in recent years in response to the often eye-watering mark-ups made on mattresses sold in bricks-and-mortar stores.

Mattress-in-a-box is an online only mattress industry. Manufacturers cut out the middleman by selling directly to the consumer, and they deliver compressed mattresses to your door. The mattresses are deoxygenated and enclosed in vacuum-sealed packaging, making it possible to be transported in a box, earning them their nickname. Once opened, the mattresses slowly expand into the full size .

They’re generally cheaper than conventional mattresses, costing around a thousand dollars for a queen-size mattress . Through our testing we’ve found that a mattress that costs $1000 can be just as comfortable and perform just as well over its lifetime as a traditional one priced at $6000.

Mattress-in-a-box beds are usually made of foam or foam-like materials .

These mattresses generally represent good value, although they may not be for everyone as one person’s idea of the perfect comfy mattress may differ from another’s. They tend to use more foam and foam-like materials than spring mattresses, so a mattress-in-a-box may not be for you if you prefer the feel of a traditional spring mattress.

Brands that have had success in this market, and whose products we’ve tested, include Sleeping Duck, Koala, Ecosa and Avatar.

Best Places To Buy A New Mattress: Online Vs In

Deciding how to buy a mattress often comes down to a choice between online and in-person through a mattress store. Buying a mattress online carries certain advantages over picking one out in a brick-and-mortar store, but the in-person shopping experience also offers certain benefits that cant be replicated on a computer. Important factors to consider when choosing where to buy a mattress include affordability, selection, and convenience.

        Buying a Mattress Online

Advantages: For one, purchasing your bed online will probably save you a lot of money. Most online brands employ a relatively small staff and do not operate brick-and-mortar locations, so their overhead costs are lower and, as a result, so are their product prices. Shopping online is also convenient because you can place orders at any time of day or night, and browse products freely without feeling pressured by sales staff. Access to mattress reviews from customers is another perk, and online brands usually offer free shipping to the contiguous U.S.

Disadvantages: Some shoppers prefer consulting with knowledgeable staff before making their purchase. Many online brands offer live web chat with customer service personnel, but access to this service can be spotty, especially outside of normal business hours. Many people also feel uncomfortable ordering a mattress without sleeping on it first, though most online brands offer sleep trials spanning at least 90 nights to let you test out the bed before committing to it.

        Skimp On The Foundation

The 13 Best Places to Buy a Mattress in 2021

If you have a platform bed, you wont need a foundation , but if you dont have a bed frame and dont want your mattress on the floor, youll need a foundation to raise it up. But theres no need to spend a lot of money on whats basically a wooden box covered with fabric. If your old foundation is still in good shape and youre buying the same size mattress, you might not need a new one at all. If purchasing a new foundation, ask to substitute a lower-priced model for the one typically sold with your mattress.

A standard bed frame that once held both a foundation box spring and mattress can be converted to a platform-style bed simply by omitting the foundation/ box spring and laying wooden slats or a sheet of plywood across the bed frame to hold the new mattress. Most modern mattresses perform just fine without the box spring, though manufacturers also try very hard to sell them to you.
