B Cost Factors For Latex Mattresses

Mattress Buying Guide (How To Choose A Mattress)
  • Natural vs Synthetic Latex Natural latex is harvested from sustainable rubber trees. The process creating the natural latex is more expensive than synthetic latex. Therefore, synthetic latex will be the more cost effective option when shopping for a latex mattress.
  • Production Process Both natural and synthetic types of latex are made using one of two options, or a combination: Dunlop process or Talalay process. The original latex mattress Dunlop process produces a heavier and denser mattress. Those seeking support layers will want the more modern Talalay process. The Talalay makes a less dense mattress that will be costlier than the Dunlop.
  • Latex Mattress Thickness Latex mattresses are made using molds that are filled, either entirely with the Dunlop process, or partly with air vacuumed in to finish filling the mold, as with the Talalay. Depending on the layers in construction and the overall thickness will affect the price. A more comfortable thicker latex mattress will generally have a higher price tag.

What To Expect With Each Mattress Price

Although the average mattress should be replaced every 7 to 10 years, different materials have different durability and estimated lifespans. A thin memory foam mattress, for example, may only last for a few years while the best latex mattress can last well beyond a decade. However, longer-lasting materials like latex will cost more than cheaper synthetic material.

Online and brick-and-mortar stores both provide a range of mattress prices, which can depend considerably on quality, brand name, and features. Prices can range from an innerspring mattress with box springs at around $200 to a luxurious brand-name memory foam bed with a motorized base for $10,000 or more.

Here are a few things you can expect from a range of potential mattress prices:

  • $200 to $400: These are basic mattresses that last longer if you do not use them consistently, so they may make good guest room beds. Typically, more expensive mattresses come with more extended warranties, so mattresses around this price range usually only come with a 3 to 5-year warranty. Foam mattresses in this category are all synthetic, may be thinner, and have an increased chance of off-gassing. Innerspring mattresses will have fewer, larger gauge coils so they may feel springier at first, but they may not provide much support after a few years.

    Cost Factors For Innerspring Mattresses

Here are some important considerations to make when looking at innersprings:

    • The price-point of an innerspring mattress is often tied to durability and lifespan. Cheaper models tend to feature polyfoam comfort layers and bonnell coils, which typically perform for three to five years. Costlier innersprings may feature memory foam or latex in the comfort layer and more durable coils such as offset or continuous-wire coils in the support core.
    • Some innersprings are constructed with pocketed coils its important to note that mattresses featuring at least two inches of memory foam and/or latex in the comfort layer and pocketed coils in the support core are technically considered hybrids, not innersprings.
    • Gauge can be used to determine how durable a mattress coil is thicker low-gauge coils are more durable than thinner high-gauge coils.
    • Many mattress manufacturers list coil count as a measure of quality and durability and the price may reflect this but coil count does not necessarily reflect the lifespan of an innerspring mattress.

What Is The Best Mattress To Buy

The best mattress to buy depends on different factors, such as your sleeping position, preferred material, and budget.

    • Sleeping position:

If you are a side sleeper, we recommend a plush or medium firm mattress. A softer mattress shapes itself around the shoulders and hips. At the same time, the mattress provides support for the rest of the body.

For back sleepers, we recommend a firm mattress which prevents the neck and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

    • Preferred material:

Choose from our spring or foam & latex mattresses. Our spring mattresses offer individually wrapped springs that work independently to closely follow your movements and the contours of your body.

Our foam & latex mattresses are soft and resilient, and they spread your body weight evenly to promote restful sleep and better blood circulation.

    • Your budget:

We have mattresses to fit every budgetfrom basic mattresses to mattresses made with high quality natural materials. But you can be sure that every one is designed to give you a good nights sleep.

Are Expensive Mattresses Worth The Money

That depends on what youre looking for in a mattress. If youre only looking for a good nights sleep, you can probably get away with a value mattress. However, if youre dealing with pain or medical issues, the best mattress money can buy could be worth every penny.

A top-of-the-line mattress can help you deal with everything from sleep apnea to back pain to arthritis. Greater comfort may also lead to better sleep for people with insomnia and other sleep issues. And organic mattresses can help people with sensitivities or allergies sleep well. That means a better quality bed could be just the thing for your overall health.

Consider Where You Purchase Your Mattress

Leesa Mattress Review – A Good Mattress For Side Sleepers? (2020 Update!)

A vast majority of people now buy their mattresses online rather than going to brick and mortar physical location. Thats largely because online shopping offers greater convenience, and many brick-and-mortar mattress stores can be confusing when it comes to their models, pricing, and firmness scales.

While people cant try out an online mattress the way they can in a mattress store, they often come with generous sleep trials. These allow people to try out the mattress for a few months and return it if they are unhappy.

In addition, many online mattresses are more affordable than their in-store counterparts, because they have less overhead and have cut out the middlemen to pass savings directly to the consumer. In addition, some companies own their own factories, which allows them to keep prices even lower.

There are also a few hidden-gem companies out there that spend very little on marketing, and they pass on the savings to the customer in the form of a lower price. This is a subtle nuance, but there are definitely extra savings to be had if people can find a company with a great product that doesnt spend a lot on marketing.

Also, some companies make their mattresses overseas, which allows them to cut down on costs and pass the savings directly on to the consumer.

    Average Mattress Cost By Size

Because mattress price varies greatly depending on the type of mattress and potential add-ons, determining the cost of mattresses by size is difficult without accounting for other factors. However, the average mattress price by size generally breaks down like this:3

    • Twin Ideal for single sleepers and small spaces, twin-size mattresses cost between $100 and $500, with $300 as an average rate. For twin XL mattresses, expect to pay an additional $50 to $200.
    • Full Best for young adults and guest rooms, full-size mattresses typically cost between $200 and $600.
    • Queen The most popular size, queen mattresses typically cost anywhere between $300 and $2,000, depending on the type.
    • King For couples who love to sprawl out or share their space with kids and pets, king-size mattresses are ideal. Because of their expansive, luxurious size, they tend to be on the pricier side. Youll rarely find a quality king for less than $1,000 and the higher-end models can cost upwards of $5,000. Although less common, California kings are around the same price point.

    Where You Buy The Mattress

Whether you buy a mattress online or in-store can affect the price. Traditionally, to buy a mattress you would need to visit a physical store and work with a salesperson. Purchasing a mattress from a retail store tends to be more expensive than buying online due to operating costs, sales commissions, and retail markups. However, there is the possibility of negotiating for a discounted price or add-ons like White Glove delivery and old mattress removal.

The increasing popularity of direct-to-consumer mattress companies cuts out the middleman and results in less of a retail markup. Without the overhead operating costs and commissions for salespeople, online mattress companies pass the savings directly onto the customer. The downside to this is that you are not able to try out the mattress before purchasing and there is no room for negotiating.

Can You Negotiate A Mattress Price

Yes, if you are buying from a brick and mortar store. Sometimes, companies agree to reduce the price a bit to obtain a new, loyal customer. If you want to save a buck or two, you can also shop during the Black Friday and the official holidays. Most mattress brands have sales during those, so its the best way to cut the cost on your new bed.

    Are Extra Firm Mattresses Good

    Button & Sprung

An extra firm mattress isnt the best bed for everyone. Many sleepers, such as side and petite sleepers, will likely wake up with aches and pains if they sleep on a too-firm mattress. However, some sleepers will benefit from a firm mattress, such as stomach sleepers.

Theres no such thing as a good firmness or a bad firmness. Everyone has different sleep needs, which means everyone has a mattress firmness thats best for them.

    Types Of Queen Mattress

The type of queen mattress is mainly defined by inner materials, and we’ve already gone through the costs of these different mattresses. Now let’s get deep into these materials.

  • An innerspring mattress offers a thin layer of foam on top of the innerspring coils.
  • A foam mattress offers the most cushioned comfort and conforming.
  • Hybrid mattresses are a blend of both innerspring and foam mattresses.
  • Typically, a latex mattress contains one layer of natural or synthetic latex.
  • Airbed mattress inflates through an electric or battery-operated pump.
  • All these mattress types have good and bad sides. However, innerspring offers the least support to the user. Moreover, foam mattresses are good for shoulder and hip support having better cushioning in these areas.

Hybrid mattresses and latex are quality ensured mattresses, which ensures the entire comfort of the user. The last one on the list is a bit different from others as you can deflate it and store it more conveniently.

Check The Guarantee/warranty On Your Mattress

Make sure you know what your rights are if there’s a problem with your mattress. Most guarantees for mattresses won’t cover gradual wear and tear, which leads to loss of support.

You should also check whether theres anything in particular, such as removing labels or using a base other than a recommended one, that would invalidate the guarantee.

    What’s Your Financial Situation

If you can wait a bit, you open up your chances of finding a better bed. Spend at least $1,000 to get a good mattress that will last 7-10 years.

That being said, sometimes you just can’t wait that long. If you need a bed right now, you should know how far your money will get you.

Here’s an idea of what kind of queen size mattress you can get at each price range:

    • $300$400These are your budget mattresses. They’re made of cheaper materials that will only last you a few years. They’re a great option for guest rooms that don’t get used regularly. But if you’re looking for a durable mattress that will last, you’ll need to spend a bit more.
  • $400$600This is a great price point for wallet-friendly beds. Innerspring and foam beds will feature more durable materials. You’ll likely have to shop online to find a mattress this cheap. But brands like Tuft & Needle have a generous trial period and return policy so you can take months to try out the mattress.
  • $600$1,000This is where you’ll find your average-priced mattresses. You’ll find lots of options for innerspring, memory foam, and hybrid beds with better support and comfort. Many beds in this category come with at least a 10-year warranty. If you’re shopping for a latex bed, you’ll have to spend even more.

While none of these steps will save you time, they can save you money in the long run. Taking the proper time to research the best mattress for your own sleep needs can prevent you from ending up on an uncomfortable mattress a few years down the line. Additionally, making sure youre buying a bed with a good, protective warranty will reduce your chances of being stuck replacing a defective mattress out of pocket.

If you take the time to research details of the kind of mattress you want or need, you can invest money in a great mattress. For the best price, keep an eye out for mattress sales. Around the holidays, mattress companies usually discount their beds or offer promotional products with the purchase of a mattress. Additionally, sign up for promotional emails to make sure youre getting your new bed for the best price.

Depending on what you want and how much you can put aside, budgeting anywhere between $300 and $3,000 can get you a quality mattress. On average, we find consumers are spending an average of $1,000 on a high-quality mattress with a good warranty.

How Much Does A Mattress Cost

Theres no one-size-fits-all price tag for a quality mattress. You can spend as little as $250 and as much as $3,500+ on a new bed. Many factors contribute to a beds price: the mattress size, materials used, country of manufacture, and more.

Because there is so much variance in price from size to size and material to material, it can be difficult to get a basic grasp of a price range to expect. For a quick estimate, its helpful to compare price ranges for each category of mattress.

    Average Mattress Cost by Category:

    Mattress Category
Affordable beds, typically all-foam or innerspring construction using basic materials. $250-$1,000
Mid-range beds, usually all-foam, innerspring, or hybrid using quality materials. $500-$1,500
Luxurious beds mostly hybrid and latex construction using high-end materials. $1,200-$3,000+

    Average Mattress Cost by Material:

    Mattress Category
Affordable beds, typically all-foam or innerspring construction using basic materials. $500-$1,200+
Mid-range beds, usually all-foam, innerspring, or hybrid using quality materials. $250-$1,200+
Luxurious beds mostly hybrid and latex construction using high-end materials. $1,000-$2,500+ $1,100
Hybrid Hybrid beds combine traditional metal coils with layers of foam materials, to create a good blend of comfort and support. $1,000-$3,000+

    Innerspring Mattress Cost Considerations

Traditionally, the quality of an innerspring mattress has been measured by its coil count. More coils made it more comfortable and, usually, more expensive. However, a high coil count does not guarantee comfort, though it almost always makes the bed cost more.

If possible, find out the gauge of the coils in an innerspring mattress youre considering. Higher gauged coils are made out of thinner metal and wont last as long, but they are less expensive. Lower gauged coils will last a long time, but theyll cost you more.

    Coil Type
    High $$$

The composition of the comfort layer will also affect innerspring mattress pricing. That is the layer between you and the coils since you dont want to lay directly on them. If this is made out of high-quality foam or latex, the bed will be more expensive. If its more like the layer on a traditional mattress, the bed wont cost as much.

Finally, coils that are placed in individual pockets inside the mattress will cost more than coils that are next to each other with nothing in between. Placing all of that material in there to form the pockets cost something, and manufacturers will pass that cost on to you.
