Divan Base And Tempur Mattress Issues
I purchased a tempur original mattress about 7-8 years ago and put it on my slatted bed. I changed my bed base about 10 months ago to a cheap divan base with drawers. Now i find our backs are really aching every morning.Do you think it could be this cheap base and what bed base would you advise for this mattress. I noticed you have several bed bases for sale, thanks Gina >
Thanks for your question.
There isnt a whole world of difference between a solid top base and slats. There would be a bit more difference if the slats were sprung as theres a bit more movement there but again still not a whole world apart.
It is difficult to definitively put aches and pains down to a mattress or base A sprung base will give the mattress a slightly softer feel whereas a solid top platform divan or slatted bed base will give the mattress a slightly firmer feel overall. Please see our base range here.
Our advice here would be to add a mattress topper as this will introduce an extra comfort layer and soften down any bed that is too firm. You should generally follow the rule of foam with foam, latex with latex etc. As such it might be worth having a look at our Coolblue and Laygel toppers.
Both have a depth of 7.5cm giving plenty of surface to sink into before you hit the mattress. The Laygel is the softer of the 2 but both models are more a medium density overall.
Allows The Mattress To Work For You
Memory foam, latex foam, and hybrid mattresses contour to the body, so your muscles can recover as you sleep. These beds provide the perfect combination of cushioning and support so your spine remains in a safe, neutral position.
Without the right foundation, the mattress will begin to sag in certain places. As this happens, your body will also sinkforcing your spine out of alignment. When the spine is not straight, our bodies have to overcompensate for the lack of support by sleeping in uncomfortable positions. However, a stable support base will allow you to get the most out of your advanced mattress.
Characteristics Of A Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses are quite popular these days. They offer something new and improved for the consumer to consider. The idea that a mattress can mold to ones body and cradle them as they sleep is revolutionary. This is a far cry from the traditional mattress that contains springs that may wear out or break with extended use.
There are characteristics of a memory foam mattress that consumers should consider when deciding to make the switch from traditional to memory foam. The first characteristic to consider is the weight of a memory foam mattress. They tend to be heavy and need a solid foundation. The ideal setup would include a solid with a flat surface to lay the mattress on. You will then need a bed foundation to rest the mattress and support on.
Secondly, memory foam mattresses have the ability to aid in the treatment of chronic back problems and poor circulation. While sleeping, memory foam can relieve pressure points and spinal pressure. The average individual spends one-third of their life in bed. So, it seems sensible to have a mattress that would aid in the treatment of chronic ailments.
Lastly, memory foam is a material labeled hypoallergenic. This means that while you sleep, the threat of needing an antihistamine in the morning is low. Because of the material used, consumers are less likely to have an allergic reaction during their sleep.

Can You Put A Waterproof Mattress Cover On A Memory Foam Mattress
Waterproof protectors keep liquids away and stains at a minimum. They keep bed bugs at bay and fit nicely on a memory foam mattress that has a topper. Making the decision to purchase a memory foam mattress protector is making the choice to invest in your sleep.
What kind of mattress protector is best for memory foam?
- SlumberCloud Core Mattress Protector.
- Sleep Tite Hypoallergenic 100% Waterproof.
- PlushDeluxe Premium Bamboo Mattress Protector.
Can you put a mattress pad on top of memory foam? A mattress pad can be used on a memory foam mattress. However, a mattress pad offers a thin layer of cushioning, which is not ideal to put on a memory foam mattress since it may act as a filter that keeps your natural body heat away from your memory foam mattress.
Does water ruin a memory foam mattress?
That said, enough moisture and water can ruin even the highest quality memory foam. So, you need to let the water out quickly and let the mattress ventilate. If the water stays inside the mattress for over 24 hours, mold and mildew start to form, causing a musky odor.
Can You Put A Memory Foam Mattress On A Box Spring
Generally speaking, a traditional type of box spring base is not suitable for using memory foam. Instead, they are apt to be used for innerspring mattresses.
Box springs are constructed with a combination of wood and steel springs secured within the frame. The springs act as shock absorbers that mean they are designed to absorb the pressure of the traditional mattress over it.
The memory foam bedding itself provides the right amount of comfort and support, so its not necessary to add anything so solid like a box spring underneath. This foundation is not for memory foam. If placed on a box spring, it can flex under it.
Also, the bed will dip between the slats and coils of the box spring, causing the foam to wear before time and lose support. Thus, one is unlikely to reap the benefits of memory foam mattresses in such circumstances.

Why We Switched To A Divan Bed Base For Our Tempur Mattress
That was until we were feeling at night like the Tempur mattress has suddenly stopped being as cushiony and supportive. It was as if the mattress has become squashed or compressed and was not giving full comfort any more.
This was when we delved underneath the bed, only to realise that our super squishy marshmallow bed was kind of seeping through the gaps in the bed slats like sausage meat!
Gross, I know. It seems that the weight of the mattress, even more so when we were lying on top of the mattress was forcing the soft base of the Tempur mattress down into the gaps between the slats.
Now, we are average sized adults, so weight definitely wasnt an issue.
I think this uneven base was having a big impact of the comfort of the matter
The sinking weightless feeling that you are supposed to have when lying on the bed sort of disappeared slowly. And when we lifted the mattress up off the slats, there were grooves and ridges in the base of the mattress from where the slats had been pushing into the base.
We switched to a divan base bed
We have now switched to a flat platform style base, one with a solid base for the Tempur mattress to lie on and the mattress feels back to its old self. Extremely comfortable and very supportive.
If anyone was asking which type of bed to go for, to use with a memory foam mattress, I would always say go for a platform style divan bed base. To give your memory foam mattress more support and to protect it for its full life of use.
Can You Put A Memory Foam Mattress On A Slatted Base
As mentioned earlier, memory foam mattresses are pretty heavy compared to traditional mattresses. It means they require more support. There are different types of foundations that can be used for memory foam. One of them is a slatted base.
A slatted base a type of foundation that can be used on a bed frame to create support. It sits at an excellent height off the floor, and it has a clean, modern look.
The technique is to place the wooden planks by spacing them evenly below the mattress. This ensures the mattress aligns the back correctly and the memory foam wears evenly.
The slats should be screwed or placed no more than 2-3 inches apart or less. Make sure that the slats are close together. Here is to noted that plywood could also be used over the slats to create that solid, uniform bottom if your mattress is big.
Further, slatted base foundations for memory allow mattresses to breathe. And maintain a good level of air circulation. This type of foundation is easy to assemble and available in Full, Twin, Queen and King.

Best Bed Frame For Memory Foam Mattress
With a memory foam mattress, its best to use a slatted or solid mattress foundation. If you go with a slatted foundation, the slats should be no further than 3 inches apart. Any further apart and youll need to buy extra slats or a bunkie board to create a more stable surface for your memory foam mattress.
Modern platform beds are another good bed frame for memory foam mattresses. Platform beds are essentially just a more decorative mattress foundation, as they often contain features like built-in headboards or under-bed storage drawers. Do You Need A Bunkie Board Under A Latex Foam Mattress
Latex foam mattresses are known for being elastic and durable. They are dense and heavy, just like any foam mattress. Therefore, they require a sturdy base underneath. So, does that mean that you need a bunkie board under a latex foam mattress?
Yes, you do need a bunkie board under a latex foam mattress because latex foam is heavy, elastic, breathable, and can break down over time. A bunkie board will help prolong the life of your latex foam mattress.
Latex foam mattresses are dense in order to help absorb shock. Bunkie boards, whether made of a whole plank or of slats, are sturdy enough to support and bear the extra weight of latex foam mattresses. However, the slats have to be wide, thick and spaced less than three inches apart to provide even weight distribution. Hardwood and metal rods support heavy weights better than plywood, so look for those materials when selecting a bunkie board for a latex foam mattress.
Latex foam mattresses also react to movement. Whenever you move in bed, the mattress will dig in at specific points and mold to your body. Because of this, the mattress needs a foundation that offers constant and uniform support, like a bunkie board.
Or If You Can You Put A Tempur Mattress On Slats
Tempurpedic mattress on slats. It needs to be completely supported. This is debatable because it is physically possible to put a mattress onto slats but it may compromise your beds support. Softwoods are not usually used to make slats as they bend and bow and are not as resistant to pressure or weight.
However we understand that some consumers wish to use their slatted foundation or platform bed which may be permissible provided the slats and bed are structurally sound and as a general rule 3 wide and no. This will ensure that pressure is spread evenly over the mattress keeping any one part from becoming overly worn. How To Board Over A Slatted Bed Base
To address the issue of the desirable flat surface for your mattress when used on a sprung slatted base, you should really be taking measures to do all you can to achieve this. The best method we have found is to place thin sheets of MDF onto your slats, to create the flat even surface required.
This image shows three lengths of MDF sheets bridging the arched slats and central bar to prevent the central dipping problems. They are also not so big as to prevent any problems with aeration to the mattress.
This has been topped off with a substantial feather topper to add an element of cushioning to the underside of the mattress. To prevent the topper slipping when the mattress is turned I have placed the corner ties on the topper between the noggins on the slat inserts.
As stated above there will be a comfort difference between a mattress used on a slatted base and the same mattress used on a sprung edged divan.
Bed Base Materials: Wooden Bed Frames Vs Metal Bed Frames

The best wooden bed bases are made from strong quality timber. Popular wooden bed bases are made from ash, oak, pine, mahogany and walnut. Be sure to choose a wooden slat bed base thats made from high quality wood and materials.
