If youre reading this, chances are youre looking for the best flippable mattress that can be used on either side.

A flippable mattress is one that is specifically designed with two sleeping surfaces, so it can be used on either side. Generally, they also offer two distinct firmness levels. One surface of a flippable mattress will usually be a medium or medium-firm, while the opposite surface will offer a firmer feel. This makes flippable mattresses highly versatile, particularly for guest rooms and vacation rentals.

Believe it or not, flippable mattresses used to be the norm. Since the early 2000s, however, they have fallen out of fashion with mattress manufacturers. Fortunately, you can still find high-quality double-sided mattresses with the help of this guide.

How Should You Flip Your Mattress

Flipping a mattress means turning it over, so you sleep on the other side of the bed. To do this, you raise the mattress on its edge and lower the bed over so that the other side is now sided face up. You could flip your bed without also rotating your mattress, but in general, its always best to do both. By doing flipping and spinning the mattress wears more evenly.

Wait So Why Can’t I Flip A Foam Mattress

Nectar’s mattress has several layers of foam stacked on one side.

Mattresses from Leesa, Purple, Casper, Nectar and more all have layers of padding that start at the top of the mattress and go down. It’s not that you can’t actually flip these kinds of beds, but you might end up damaging the mattress by doing so.

They also won’t feel as comfortable if you flip them. In most of these beds, the top layers of foam are soft and less dense to promote airflow and cradle your body. If you flip the mattress, you’ll likely be sleeping on a denser layer of foam that could feel warmer when you sleep.

Flipping An Innerspring Mattress

Most innerspring mattresses have identical padding on both sides.

I’ll bet your first “big kid” bed used an innerspring mattress — they have been the most popular choice of mattress for decades. Because they generally have identical padding and support on both sides of the mattress , you are supposed to rotate and flip them a few times per year. Doing that ensure the mattress wears evenly on both sides so that you can get more life out of it.

This was a regular practice for me with the two innerspring mattresses I’ve owned, and I always felt like my bed felt more comfortable and more supportive once I flipped it.

But today’s innerspring mattresses from some of the top brands — like Serta, Sealy, Beautyrest and Spring Air — aren’t designed to be flipped. They are constructed of several layers of padding on top of a base of coils, and so they should always stay right-side up.

In todays world, corporations with Big Brand Names have aligned their priorities with their responsibility to their stockholders. The expectation of Shareholders regarding the bottom line has taken priority over constructing beds that are high-quality, long-lasting, and comfortable. Mattresses and foundations brought to market faster, cheaper, and with an appearance of high fashion have taken precedence over beds that are hand-constructed, long-lasting, and offer comfortable support.

STL Beds is bringing back old-school, quality-constructed, made-in-America mattresses that can be flipped over and rotated to withstand years of usage.

They Provide Improved Weight Distribution

Mattresses tend to have thicker padding on a one-sided mattress, leading to deep body impressions occurring over the mattress’s lifetime. This makes it more difficult to move or turn in the nighttime. With a double-sided mattress, you are getting a better distribution of weight, which allows the bottom side padding of the mattress to recover while you sleep on the top.

Can I Flip My Memory Foam Mattress

No, you shouldn’t flip your memory foam mattress. This is because the memory foam layer is only on the top of your mattress, not on the underside.

If you flip it over, you won’t enjoy the benefits of the memory foam. Additionally, the underside isn’t suitable to sleep on and won’t feel comfortable!

You should still rotate your memory foam mattress regularly to keep the fillings evenly distributed.

Can You Flip A Pillow Top Mattress

How to Fix Dips in Serta I-Series King or Queen Size Pillowtop Bradbury Mattress with Review

Usually no but there are exceptions.

Pillow top mattresses are specifically designed to have a layer of padding sewn into the top of the mattress to make it more comfortable.

This means that the vast majority of pillow top mattresses are single sided because having a pillow top on the bottom would cause it to be crushed under your weight which may damage the integrity of the underside pillow top.

However, I was actually quite surprised to see that some manufacturers do sell double sided pillow top mattresses such as Dream Solutions Firm Pillow Top and Spectras 14-inch Double-Sided Pillow-Top.

I can only assume that such models have been specifically designed to resist damage when one of the pillow top sides is sandwiched between the bed base and the rest of the mattress plus your body weight.

But Ive not reviewed either of those mattresses yet so I cant really comment if their double sided design negatively impacts the long term durability of the pillow top or not.

Should You Flip Your Mattress

  • Image Attribution and Licencing
  • Flipping a mattress means to turn it over so that the side that you normally sleep on is facing down and youre now sleeping on what used to be the bottom of the mattress.

You might have heard that flipping your mattress every few months is required to prevent sagging and increase the lifespan of the mattress.

So should you flip your mattress?

Typically, you should NOT flip your mattress because most modern mattresses have a unilateral design meaning they can only be used with one side facing upwards. Flipping such a mattress would mean sleeping on the denser support core causing discomfort and mattress damage.

The only exceptions to this rule are double-sided mattresses that have been specifically designed so that they can be turned over.

In the next sections, Im going to explain how to find out if your mattress is double sided or not and which specific types and brands of mattresses can or cannot be flipped.

What If I Cannot Turn My Mattress

If you physically cannot turn the mattress yourself we would still recommend you buy a two-sided mattress because when one side wears out, which it inevitably will if not turning or rotating your mattress monthly. You still have the option of gaining some assistance in turning the mattress. Even if this can only be achieved annually. The other side of your mattress will be like brand new and provide you with many more years of comfort rather than having to be disposed of. There a few exceptions where a one-sided mattress is acceptable but these are very rare. For example, a pocket sprung and natural latex mattress would use a one-sided construction method, however, it needs to have a significantly high GSM of fillings which reduces the issue with it being one-sided. Also, Latex has very high resilience and response rate so it doesnt suffer like cheaper foams or polyester to sagging and dipping as quickly.

All of our hybrid and latex mattresses come with our dual construction method, not seen in many of the retailers. This constructs of a high-quality memory /hybrid foam base with a matching high-quality topper. This means that you can rotate and turn the topper when you normally would turn your mattress.

The easiest way to remove the drawbacks of a no-turn mattress, however, is to buy a two-sided well-upholstered mattress.

Do They Still Make Flippable Mattresses

17 Cool DIY Projects That Turn Old Tires Into Awesome ...

Yes. Flippable mattress manufacturers are scarce nowadays, but you can find them. While most flippable mattresses in the past were innerspring, most of them are now made of foam.

Its common to find a flippable foam mattress with a very high firmness level. These mattresses lack pressure relief, but if you need an extra firm and long-lasting mattress, its an option. They are fairly affordable as well because theyre made with cheaper materials.

If you want a slightly softer flippable mattress, you can get something called a luxury firm, which has a mattress topper of soft material . If you need more pressure relief but dont like the texture of foam, an all-foam flippable pillow top mattress may be your best bet.

Another option is a flippable latex foam mattress. These are highly durable, but they are very heavy. A new mattress of natural latex might smell a bit like vanilla for awhile.

A flippable innerspring mattress is hard to find these days, but you can get them on auction sites if youre a true fan of them. The best flippable innerspring mattress you can buy is a flippable hybrid mattress that utilizes some combination of latex foam or memory foam along with innerspring or pocketed coils.

Where Can I Buy A Two

It can be a bit difficult to find a one-sided mattress these days, as many companies switched over to one-sided completely. However, there are a few brands that still make flippable mattresses of high quality. US-Mattress sells a range of double-sided mattresses from Serta, Restonic, and Spring Air – shop now.

The ZenHaven and the Nolah Signature are also highly regarded flippable mattresses. Saatva makes a flippable mattress that’s particularly great for kids, called the Saatva Youth.

    What Is A One

A no-turn mattress is not a benefit to you. Its yet another marketing trick, such as inflated spring counts. Dont be fooled into thinking its a feature its simply one of the drawbacks of these mattresses. We have written previously about the one-sided mattress problem which should be read in conjunction with this article.

A one-sided mattress has fillings such as foam or high loft fibres in the top layer of the mattress. These cant be turned over because if they were, they would get crushed and potentially not return to their usual shape or feel. You also cannot sleep on the other side. You often find this with boxed foam-based mattresses, like Casper, Ev, Simba etc where they layer up softer foams and fillings on top of a firmer foam support system. There are also pocket spring one-sided mattress models that use this method as well which can be found in all the retailers like Dreams, Bensons and the like. For the most part pocket spring one-sided mattresses are designed that way to save costs as you only have half the fillings needed in a mattress and can still charge a regular price for them.

if you see a No turn label or feature you know that a mattress is one-sided and you need to carefully consider whether youre happy to settle for only being able to use one side.

How Often Should I Rotate Or Turn My Mattress

Your mattress should provide you with years of comfort and good support. To keep your mattress in great condition, we recommend that you rotate it at least once every three months. This means moving your mattress from the head of your bed to the foot – from top to bottom.

Rotating your mattress regularly is important, because it helps to keep the comfort fillings evenly distributed. It also means that you’ll use each side equally. It’s an easy way to improve its lifespan and it forms part of general mattress care.

A Phone Camera To Flip For: ASUS Zenfone 8 / 8 Flip Review

Most mattresses sold today are one-sided and should never be flipped over. This is because they are usually feature base layers made of dense foam and, in some cases, steel springs using these surfaces for sleep can lead to aches, pains, and pressure points. However, some mattress brands offer flippable mattresses with suitable sleep surfaces on each side. Some offer the same firmness on both sides, which can extend the lifespan of the mattress, while other models have different firmnesses on each side to accommodate sleepers with preferences that vary from night to night.

This guide will look at common designs of flippable mattresses and benefits of using them, as well as tips for first-time buyers and our picks for the best flippable mattresses that are currently available for sale.

    Best Rated Flippable Innerspring Mattresses

Often you will see two-sided foam mattresses, but less frequently youll get a bed that has innersprings. Still, so we have had a chance to test several flippable innerspring mattresses. Weve only selected one or two beds for this list, but we have a handful or so of favorites. As such, lets take a quick look at the best rated flippable innerspring mattresses:

    • IDLE Hybrid
    • Layla Hybrid
    • Nest Bedding Flip

But its not all upside with a double-sided innerspring mattress. They can be responsive and support, but they are also typically heavier. As such, if you will move soon or frequently, you might want to purchase your new bed after you move o get something lighter. Even so, we do think the advantages of a flippable innerspring mattress outweigh the disadvantages.

Reversible Mattresses Can Be More Expensive

Higher quality materials generally mean a higher price tag. Its as simple as that. Flippable mattresses have comfortable materials on both sides. These materials, such as pillowtop, memory foam, latex comfort foam, and others, are much more expensive than simple base foams or coils within the mattress. Flippable mattresses require more of these higher quality materials.

When it comes to flippable mattresses with different comfort or firmness levels on each side, you technically get two beds in one. So, a flippable mattress can justify a higher price tag.

    Flippable Mattress Designs And Functions

First, lets clarify the difference between flipping and rotating. Rotating refers to the process of shifting the mattress 180 degrees while using the same sleep surface when properly rotated, the areas that were the head and foot of the bed will be reversed. Most mattresses should be rotated in order to preserve the sleep surface. Innersprings and hybrids should be rotated twice per year, while foam and latex models usually need to be rotated once per year. Airbeds are an exception they never need to be rotated. Flipping, on the other hand, refers to the process of turning a mattress upside down and sleeping on the inverse surface.

Another important clarification is the difference between flippable and dual-sided mattresses. Dual-sided mattresses have one sleep surface with a different firmness on each side they are a good option for couples with different firmness preferences. However, dual-sided mattresses should never be flipped.

Common features and characteristics of flippable mattresses include:

    Symmetrical Construction

However, flippable mattresses with two firmness options are never completely symmetrical. The foam/latex components in the comfort layers have different densities and/or indentation load deflections to ensure unique firmness on each side. Additionally, one of the sides may feature components like microcoils or extra foam layers.
