Does Memory Foam Mattress Have Fiberglass

Do All Mattresses Have Fiberglass In Them

News 4 Investigates: Is a dangerous component of your mattress actually fire-resistant?

No, not all mattresses have fiberglass inside them, particularly as the drawbacks of fiberglass become more understood. However, the material is still used as an affordable way for mattresses in the U.S. to meet federal safety standards.

Fiberglass is relatively inexpensive and it is quite effective as a non-chemical flame retardant. So it remains, for now at least, a common ingredient in mattresses.

How To Care For The Best Fiberglass

Here are a few tips to help you keep your mattress in tip-top shape:

1. Vacuum regularly. This will help remove dust and other particles that can accumulate over time. Be sure to use a soft brush attachment to avoid damaging the fabric.

2. Spot-clean as needed. If there are any spills or stains, you’ll want to clean them as soon as possible. Use a mild detergent and cool water. Avoid using hot water, as this can damage the fabric.

3. Rotate or flip your mattress regularly. This will help evenly distribute wear and tear. For most mattresses, you should rotate or flip them every three to six months.

4. Protect your mattress from Sun exposure. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage the fabric over time, so it’s best to keep your mattress out of direct sunlight whenever possible.

5. Store your mattress properly. When not using your mattress, storing it in a cool, dry place is important. Avoid storing it in a humid environment, as this can promote the growth of mold and mildew.

6. Don’t allow pets on the bed. Pets can carry dirt and dust on their fur, which can transfer to your mattress cover and cause stains or holes in the mattress. Additionally, pet nails can snag and tear the fabric.

Following these simple tips will help you keep your fiberglass-free mattress in great condition for years to come!

What You Can Do

When you buy a mattress or crib mattress, EWG recommends looking for a company that is transparent about what it uses to meet fireproofing requirements and about the other materials in their products.

Mattresses can meet flammability standards using one of several safer alternatives, including wool or polylactic acid batting. Choose materials like wool and cotton and be wary of overstated claims.

Absolutely No Fire Socks

Inexpensive foam mattress constructions rely on Fire Resistant Socks. FR Socks are the synthetic material that encases the inner core of foam mattresses. Its purpose is to offer an additional layer of protection and slow the combustion of a mattress.

FR Socks are produced using a variety of techniques and ingredients. Most contain fiberglass others use heavy chemical treatments. They are intended to be safe but expose the user to other risks. To give you a better idea the video below shows how an FR Sock is applied to a mattress. Harvest does not use FR Treated Socks.

Are All Mattress Covers Flammable

Do Memory Foam Mattresses Have Fiberglass

Unfortunately, not every inner cover of every mattress can prevent fires completely. And as a result, all mattress covers are, to some degree, flammable.

However, many mattress covers can slow the spread of fire and reduce the likelihood of injury or death occurring.

These are called FR socks, and they encase the inner core of the mattress.

How Do I Know If My Mattress Has Fiberglass

There are three ways to tell if a mattress has fiberglass inside:

  • Read the label to find what the mattress is made of. Youre looking for words like fiberglass , glass wool, or glass fiber
  • Check your mattress instructions. If it states do not remove the cover thats usually because theres fiberglass in it. HOT TIP: some mattresses have zips on the cover, even though they have a do not remove cover warning. This zip is part of the manufacturing process, not an invitation to remove the cover. If you find yourself with a mattress that has a zip AND an instruction to never remove the cover, dont touch that zip!
  • Cant find either of the first two? Heres when I would assume a memory foam mattress contains fiberglass:
  • It was cheap AND
  • Its made in China
  • How Can I Be Sure If Theres Fiberglass In My Mattress

Check the mattress label, and the label on the cover, if its an obvious cover with a zipper or other means of removal.

Mattresses with fiberglass generally contain the following warnings:

Made with XX% of glass fibers or glass wool or similar material

    Do Not Remove Cover

If you see either of these, be very careful, and do not remove the mattress cover, even if it has a zipper or other means to open it.

Opening a mattress with these labels or warnings is likely to release fiberglass particles into the air.

If you have a mattress cover with these warnings and it is damaged, seal it as soon as possible.

What Is A Fiberglass Fire Sock

As you shop for mattresses, you will come across various terminologies such as fire sock. In the bed market, there are two types of fire socks. Those that feature chemical treatments and the ones that contain fiberglass. Neither options are safe. You are most likely to come across the term fire sock in low price range mattresses.

Mattress brands use fiberglass fire socks to pass the flammability test. These socks act as a casing for mattresses, more especially memory foam beds. Fiberglass is the main material in the sock. Its role is to act as a flame retardant. In case your mattress catches fire, the fiberglass will melt, slow down and extinguish the flames. In a memory foam mattress without fiberglass, you will find flame retardants such as organic wool or cotton. These are much safer.

How To Avoid Fiberglass In Mattresses

Many of the reports feature Zinus mattresses which are confirmed by the manufacturer as having fiberglass in the inner cover.

However, there are many more brands that use fiberglass in their mattresses and are less forthcoming in their declarations.

So heres 3 steps that you can take to identify if your current mattress has fiberglass in it and how to avoid buying a new mattress thats packed with fiberglass.

Zinus Fiberglass / Memory Foam Mattresses : Wake up feeling like you

Fiberglass is a reinforced fiber, whereas glass fiber is just reinforced plastic. And that is exactly why fiberglass is eminent as glass or glass fiber reinforced plastic.

However, glass fiber is flattened into a sheet, and it is randomly arranged or even woven into a fabric. Glass fiber is referred to as fiberglass at times, while the composite is called the fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Here, glass fiber is a material that consists of many extremely fine fibers of glass.

In either case, these materials are unsafe for humans and the environment therefore, more mattress manufacturers are moving away and looking for alternatives .

Why Is Fiberglass Used In Mattress Toppers

But why in the world would mattress manufacturers use fiberglass on a mattress or topper? Fiberglass is a mix of composite plastic fibers and glass fibers. It has great insulating properties, can be molded to almost any shape and its a fire retardant.

Many mattresses these days are made of foam, which is a petroleum product and highly flammable. A surprising number of house fires tens of thousands start with mattresses or, more accurately, start with a lit cigarette dropped onto a mattress.

Several studies in the early 2000s proved that having a fire-resistant mattress actually did save lives. In 2007, a law was passed that requires mattress manufacturers to have some method of fire-retarding their mattresses.

For mattress and topper manufacturers, fiberglass is an economic solution. Its cheap to buy and those billions of tiny shards feel soft and can be molded into any shape. Plus, fiberglass is a safer solution than most fire-retardant chemicals, which have been proven to have serious health effects.

So, manufacturers designed a layer for their foam mattresses that were more fire retardant, made with a kind of fiberglass fabric. When fiberglass is subjected to high temperatures, it melts. That melted glass barrier slows down the fire, giving people time to escape.

Thats good news in case of fire, the fiberglass layer could save your life.

This is a good resource to read about fiberglass and mattresses.

Tuft & Needle does not use fiberglass in their mattresses. Instead, they use a fire barrier that is made out of a polyester and cotton blend. Tuft & Needle is a foam mattress without fiberglass.

In order to make it fire-proof, they treat it with food-grade salt that acts as a natural fire retardant by cutting off the oxygen supply to the flame. There is no fire-retardant chemicals or fiberglass used.

This fabric is permanently installed around the foam core of the mattress, and then it is fully encased within the outer cover. The outer cover is not removable for cleaning, so if that is a concern, Tuft & Needle recommends using a waterproof mattress cover.
