Core Construction: Springs & Things
Twenty-five years ago, most crib mattresses had a coil spring construction, for better or worse.
For better, coil innerspring construction offers superior support. Coil springs make for a very even sleeping surface with consistent support for all body parts.
For worse, they were so bouncy that toddlers couldn’t resist using it as a trampoline instead of napping, the springs weren’t always super comfortable against the body, the springs would sometimes poke entirely through the mattress surface, and the mattresses weighed upwards of 30 pounds!
Nowadays, there are tons of options: innersping, pocket coil, foam, polymer, wave support, and hybrid:
Each of these mattress cores has its own advantages and disadvantages. These include support, weight, durability, VOC content, breathability, and cost.
Support: The most supportive mattresses, in our opinion, include the coil innerspring or pocket coils. These provide deep non-linear support across the entire body, especially when the mattress has a higher innerspring count. The more coil springs, the higher density and more comfortable and supportive the mattress. Polymer and foam cores are also supportive, but not as responsive to movement, and can become dented or sloped over time.

What Is The Purpose Of A Mini Crib
A mini crib is a perfect answer for new parents with limited time, space, and budget to take care of a new baby. Perhaps youre moving to a new home or apartment, traveling for the holidays, and are looking for a bed for your baby that will get your family through the interim. A mini crib is ideal for this situation.
What Size Is A Standard Baby Bed
In the US, its the law that all cribs must fit whats known as a standard crib mattress size.
And what size is a standard crib mattress? Well, heres your standard crib mattress size chart:
- The length of the crib mattress must be between 51 ¼ and 53 inches.
- The width of the crib mattress must be between 27 ½ and 28 inches.
So as long as youre not making the crib yourself in your family woodshop, or inheriting an heirloom from before the standard crib mattress sizes were set, it should be a standard size.
This means that a crib mattress that suits it will also be easy to find. Yay!
Are baby cribs a standard size?
Yes, generally speaking, most baby cribs in the US are standard-size cribs except for mini baby cribs or differently-shaped cribs.
How high should crib mattress be for newborn?
Ideally, babys crib mattress should be at least 26 inches from the bottom of the mattress to the top of the crib rail, so baby cant easily escape.
So when youre setting up babys crib for the first time, get out the measuring tape and make sure the 26 inches are clear.
What Size Crib Sheets Do I Need
Standard Crib Mattress
The standard crib mattresses come in the size of 52 in x 28 in and for these mattresses you need to buy standard crib sheets as these will fit snugly and tightly around them as well as most toddler mattresses.
Mini Crib Mattress
The sizes of mini crib mattresses vary and so do the sizes of the mini crib sheets. Before purchasing mini sheets/mattresses ensure that the provided dimensions are what you need.
Now, to give you a general idea, a standard mini crib is 24in x 38in. You can not use a standard crib sheet for these types of mini sheets because the sizes wont match and you will be left with excess fabric that can be a safety hazard as it will come loose.
Pack n Play Mattress
If you want a mattress that is thinner than toddler/standard crib mattresses then go for the pack n play mattress. You have to keep in mind the thin size of these mattresses when you are out shopping for bedsheets.
I would recommend getting fitted sheets that come with extra padding which adds to the comfiness. You have to check the dimensions of the pack n play mattress because the sheet you are going to buy has to fit the mattress.
Questions About Crib Mattress Size
Are crib mattresses a standard size? Yes, standard full-size cribs use a mattress that is approximately 52″ long by 28″ wide. The mattress should also be at least 5″ thick, but not more than 6″ thick. A mini crib, however, uses a mattress that is only 38″ long by 24″ wide. Regardless of which crib type you have, you should always make sure the mattress fits snugly into the crib this means that you cannot fit 2 fingers between the mattress edge and the side of the crib.
Are crib mattresses twin size? No, standard full-size cribs use a mattress that is approximately 52″ long by 28″ wide, whereas a twin bed mattress is approximately 75″ long by 38″ wide. So the twin mattress is considerably bigger than a crib mattress, and they cannot be used interchangeably.
Are crib mattresses and toddler mattresses the same size? Most convertible cribs will use the same crib mattress in both the crib and toddler bed modes. In these cribs, the front of the crib gets removed and a toddler rail is installed, while still using the crib mattress. The standard full-size crib mattress is approximately 52″ long by 28″ wide, which therefore will fit most toddler beds. However, some companies such as Ikea use different toddler bed dimensions be sure to check the specifications before making a purchase of a separate toddler bed.

While quality is important, baby crib mattresses also come in a variety of sizes so you can find the perfect one for your child.
The baby crib mattress should be no longer than 28 inches in length and the babys head shouldnt go past any side bars.

Can I Stack Two Crib Mattresses
We have explained why you should get a crib mattress and given you some advice on what to look for in a mattress, but another common question parents may have is whether they can stack two crib mattresses. When your baby is in their crib, you may feel like they are too low for you to pick them up easily. If thats the case, you may wonder if more mattresses are needed, or if you could stack more than one in the crib.
No, you cannot stack two crib mattresses. While we understand why you may want to do so, cribs are designed to be used with only one mattress.
Depending on your babys size, you can adjust the crib to a level that you feel is safe. If you put a second mattress in the crib, it might make it too high, which can be very dangerous for the baby.
If youve seen a crib that looked like it had more than one mattress, it probably had a bed skirt rather than an extra mattress. A bed skirt is meant to hide the space below the mattress on a high setting.
Are Foam Mattresses Ok For Babies
Yes, but as long as the foam mattress is specially designed for babies.
Most adult foam mattresses sink to curve around your frame, but thats not what we want when looking at baby crib mattresses.
Make sure your foam crib mattress is firm enough by doing the spring-back test push on the crib mattress at different points, and it should spring back immediately.
As long as baby doesnt sink into the memory foam crib mattress, it should be safe.

Mini Crib Mattress Size
To fit the smaller-sized mini crib is the mini crib mattress. Unlike the standard size mattress, the government does not regulate the size of mini crib mattresses. However, they usually come in the dimensions of 24 inches wide and 38 inches long.
In most cases, expect to get the size right in the very first instance. But for precautionary measures, double-check the fit in case it leaves any gaps since these mattresses are narrower than others.
They also come in different depths varieties, so research the dimensions thoroughly before making the purchase.
What Is The Best Baby Crib Mattress
Crib mattress size matters, but the best crib mattress is one that fits well, cleans well, and provides proper support for your child. There is not one style or brand that has been designated as the best crib mattress, so doing your research and preparing a list of must-haves that fits within your budget is important.
Crib safety tip: The best baby crib mattress option for your child is also one that is not too plushy. Even if you think a super soft mattress might make for a more comfortable sleep, it actually poses as a suffocation risk for your baby. A crib mattress with adequate firmness is best for your baby and will put your mind at ease.

How To Select The Most Appropriate Crib Sheets
Its essential that you choose the right crib sheet for your babys safety, comfort, and deep sleep. Before you go out and get some baby crib linens, there are a few things you should think about:
Analyze the many varieties of crib sheets and pick the fabric you want to buy based on your requirements and preferences. The most frequent and safest option is to0 percent organic cotton crib sheets. Verify if it is completely safe for the skin of the newborn.
There is no need to get thrilled when you see organic on the label of a product. Verify the same by looking for the crib sheets certifications to ensure that it is entirely safe for your childs skin. It is critical to select buttery soft crib linens to ensure that your kid is always comfy in their crib. Because newborns skin is so delicate, crib sheets that arent soft might create unpleasant rashes, which you dont want.
In order to keep your babys crib mattress fresh, you need breathable crib sheets that enable air to flow freely in and out of the mattress. As a result, they reduced excessive heat, sweat, and suffocation. The style, color, pattern, and print of the sheet are some other things to check for to ensure that it matches the theme of your nursery.
Crib Sheets: The Golden Number
Three crib sheets are what we recommend you get crib sheets-wise. Babies often spit up, drool, or sweat during the night, which can stain or wet the sheet. The golden rule of 3 crib sheets works like this: one crib sheet that you can use while one is being washed and another one just in case. You can also rotate the crib sheets so that your baby has a fresh one every other day.

Do You Plan To Swaddle Your Baby
Swaddling is the practice of enveloping your infant in a blanket so that they are snug and comfortable. Its a means of keeping them safe and warm.
If you intend to swaddle your baby, you might need fewer sheets as the baby will remain in a single position, decreasing the chances for drool, leak, or sweat to spread over the sheet. Hence, the crib sheets will remain clean for a longer duration.
We recommend buying at least two sets of crib sheets, even if you swaddle your baby.
So, how many crib sheets do you need?
If you plan to change the crib sheets regularly, you will need at least 5-7 crib sheets. However, if you plan to swaddle your baby for the first few months and decide to change the crib sheets once or twice a week, you will need at least two crib sheets.
Always keep a room for the mess the baby is going to create. Therefore, you must keep an extra set of sheets in case your baby decides to give you a hard time.
Can Babies Sleep On A Mattress On The Floor
If your child is under the age of 2 years old your floor bed should be a firm crib mattress per AAP recommendations. A regular twin or full size mattress is too soft and can cause suffocation risks. The floor bed should be just a flat fitted sheet and away from the walls so that your baby cant become trapped.

Having extra crib sheets also means you wont find yourself in a situation where you have to do laundry just to wash the crib sheets. With seven crib sheets at your disposal, you will get through the week until laundry day, even if youre changing sheets every day.
