Twenty-five years ago, most crib mattresses had a coil spring construction, for better or worse.
For better, coil innerspring construction offers superior support. Coil springs make for a very even sleeping surface with consistent support for all body parts.
For worse, they were so bouncy that toddlers couldn’t resist using it as a trampoline instead of napping, the springs weren’t always super comfortable against the body, the springs would sometimes poke entirely through the mattress surface, and the mattresses weighed upwards of 30 pounds!
Nowadays, there are tons of options: innersping, pocket coil, foam, polymer, wave support, and hybrid:
Each of these mattress cores has its own advantages and disadvantages. These include support, weight, durability, VOC content, breathability, and cost.
Support: The most supportive mattresses, in our opinion, include the coil innerspring or pocket coils. These provide deep non-linear support across the entire body, especially when the mattress has a higher innerspring count. The more coil springs, the higher density and more comfortable and supportive the mattress. Polymer and foam cores are also supportive, but not as responsive to movement, and can become dented or sloped over time.
How Often To Change Crib Sheets
At least once a week! And any time your baby soils their sheets with spit up, drool, sweat, or diaper leaks!
Just know that whatever you choose, there is no right or wrong answer to how many crib sheets you should have. You can start with a few and decide from there if youd like to have more on hand from your personal experiences! You can always purchase additional sheets later! So when youre setting up babys crib for the first time, get out the measuring tape and make sure the 26 inches are clear.

What Size Crib Sheets Do I Need
Standard Crib Mattress
The standard crib mattresses come in the size of 52 in x 28 in and for these mattresses you need to buy standard crib sheets as these will fit snugly and tightly around them as well as most toddler mattresses.
Mini Crib Mattress
The sizes of mini crib mattresses vary and so do the sizes of the mini crib sheets. Before purchasing mini sheets/mattresses ensure that the provided dimensions are what you need.
Now, to give you a general idea, a standard mini crib is 24in x 38in. You can not use a standard crib sheet for these types of mini sheets because the sizes wont match and you will be left with excess fabric that can be a safety hazard as it will come loose.
Pack n Play Mattress
If you want a mattress that is thinner than toddler/standard crib mattresses then go for the pack n play mattress. You have to keep in mind the thin size of these mattresses when you are out shopping for bedsheets.
I would recommend getting fitted sheets that come with extra padding which adds to the comfiness. You have to check the dimensions of the pack n play mattress because the sheet you are going to buy has to fit the mattress.
