Returning A Damaged Mattress
While receiving a damaged mattress is annoying, the good news is that youre much more likely to get your money back if it arrived with a fault.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 , all products sold in the UK must be:
- Of satisfactory quality The mattress must not be faulty or damaged when you receive it.
- Fit for purpose It must be fit for sleeping on, and also suitable for any specific purpose you made known to the retailer before you bought it.
- As described It must match any description given to you and any samples shown to you at the time of purchase.
If your new mattress doesnt meet any one of these criteria, you can make a faulty goods claim against the retailer you bought it from.
As long as you reject the faulty mattress within the first 30 days after placing the order, you’re entitled to a full refund.
But dont worry if more than 30 days have passed. Unless the retailer can prove otherwise, any fault found with the mattress in the first six months will be presumed to have been there from when it arrived. You’ll need to give the retailer a chance to make a repair or replace the product first. If that’s unsuccessful, you can then ask for a refund.

Alternatives When You Cannot Return Your Mattress
If youve run out of time on your return period or have cut off labels from your mattress, you may not be able to return it, especially if you bought it from a third party seller. Dont worry, though there are still many eco-friendly ways of dealing with your unwanted mattress, all of which do not include leaving it on the side of the street.
If your mattress is not damaged and is in almost perfect condition,, ensuring that you make some of your money back and the mattress isnt wasted. If you dont want to get into the hassles of reselling, you can donate your mattress to homeless shelters or other charity organizations that take such large donations.
However, if your mattress is damaged and cannot be sold or donated, you can always look for local companies that can take your mattress from you and break it down and dispose of it without damaging the environment.
You also have the option to break down the mattress at home, but that requires time and specialized tools, but if you do choose to do this, you can easily throw away the softer materials yourself and sell or donate the structural parts.
Refunds And Returns: Us Federal Law
While state laws primarily address the issue of returned mattresses, theres no federal law that requires a mattress retailer to refund money. Per most state laws, refunds are subject to the established mattress store refund policy at the time of purchase, unless the purchased mattress is found to be useless for the purpose of which it was intended. A customer changing his/her mind after making a mattress purchase, such as deciding they want a bed with coils , is not the fault of the retailer and the latter cannot be held responsible.
In broad terms, most mattress stores do offer refunds. Its usually pursuant to a bed store policy which explicitly that returns are to be extended, in order to strengthen its brand in the community but this is simply a mattress store policy not a federal law.

What To Do If You Cant Return Your Mattress
Whether your trial period has run out, or you made the ultimate mistake of cutting off the mattress tag, there are times when your mattress just cant be returned. If thats the case, dont panic and leave it on the street. There are plenty of eco-friendly ways to deal with your unwanted mattress.
Donate it. If your mattress is still in good condition, contact local donation sites to see if theyll accept it. Some major donation centers, like Goodwill or Salvation Army, have specific rules about which mattresses they can accept, so call beforehand to double check. You can also check with local homeless shelters and womens shelters to see if theyre interested in accepting a gently-used mattress.
Sell it. You wont be able to get the full retail price for it, but a barely used mattress can sell for anywhere from $50-$200 on local sales sites. Just because you can doesnt mean you should. Although very lenient, one should abuse Costcos return policy. Misusing it could result in losing your Costco membership. If you have made countless mattress returns over the years, they will review your membership history and possibly revoke it.
One woman, for example, returned her printer after eight years because it stopped working. The manager who declined the return said that the woman had made so many returns over the years that they could not take any more. The customers membership ended up canceled. Returning An Eve Mattress
All Eve mattresses ordered from the Eve website come with a 100-night sleep trial, so youre free to unwrap and sleep on the mattress as normal for up to 100 nights and still get your money back if you decide its not for you. You need to try the mattress for at least 30 days, to allow your body to adjust. After that time, simply email or call Eve to let it know you want to return the mattress, and it will pick it up from your home free of charge and will issue a full refund.
Eve states it will take the mattress back in any condition and you don’t even have to get it back into the box.

A guest bedroom is an excellent spot for a new mattress that didnt work out for your nightly needs. Either create a new guest bedroom, revamp your current one or store the mattress away to be pulled out and used in the living room or basement when you next have guests. Returning A Silentnight Mattress
As with any online purchase, if you order a mattress though Silentnight’s website you can cancel within 14 days of receiving it and will get a full refund.
If more than 14 days have passed, you can exchange it under Silentnight’s 60-night comfort guarantee, which applies to all mattresses and divans ordered through its online store. You won’t get a refund, but you can exchange it for another one.
This guarantee only applies to the comfort of the product and not the height, length, width or colour of the mattress. Silentnight asks that you try your new bed for at least 28 nights before making use of the guarantee and it won’t accept mattresses that are marked or damaged in any way or have not been used in accordance with the care instructions. You also need to activate the guarantee before the 60 nights is up. Silentnight doesn’t state if you need to get the mattress back into the original packaging.
Youll be required to pay the difference if the replacement mattress is more expensive than the original, but you won’t receive a refund if the replacement is cheaper. Additional administration charges may also be applicable and only one exchange per order is permitted.

Return Instructions For A Decompressed Mattress/topper
For decompressed mattresses, we suggest having the item donated to a non-profit organizations such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Habitat For Humanity, the Red Cross, and/or donationtown.org since they do provide free local pick ups. You can also donate to local churches or any non profit organization of your choosing so long as you are able to get a proof of donation or a receipt. Once you have the proof of donation, have it sent to so we can initiate the refund.
If you are unable to donate the mattress to a non-profit organization or a local church, we advise that you dispose of the item at any local mattress disposal or recycling center in your area. There are some organizations that will provide free pickups for large furniture disposals such as mattresses. Be sure to ask for proof of your disposal receipt with the address and contact number of the place of disposal and/or photos of the item being retrieved from your possession, which you can then forward to to begin the review process.

Returning A Mattress Bought In Store
No matter how uncomfortable it is, if a mattress bought in a physical shop is not actually faulty or damaged, you can only return it if the retailer has a returns policy which isn’t a legal requirement.
Fortunately, many retailers do provide a goodwill returns policy, details of which will be on the retailers website and perhaps also on your receipt. But even that doesnt necessarily make returning a mattress easy.
Some shops will only offer an exchange or store credit, rather than a full refund. That means you won’t be able to change your mind once you’ve slept on it.
