Summary: Is The Helix Plus A Good Mattress

Helix Mattress Review (2020 Update) – Reviewing Every Helix Model!

Designed with support and durability for plus-size people in mind, the Helix Plus is one of a growing number of mattresses seeking to fill a niche. As we always say at GoodBed, choosing a mattress is a highly individual decision that involves factors like your preferred sleeping position and pressure-relief needs. Body shape and size makes a difference too a mattress that feels soft and supportive to a 300-lb. stomach sleeper will likely feel way too firm for a 150-pound back sleeper. In short, the heavier you are, the softer a mattress will feel.

In our testing, the Helix Plus was a bit softer than we expected, and softer than some other mattresses we’ve tested for plus-size people. We thought it might be a good choice for couples of different sizes, where a lighter/smaller person and a heavier or much taller person need to find a mattress than can work for both of them.

The Helix Plus is made of foam, memory foam and pocketed coils, but with just three inches of foam on top, the pocketed coil unit makes up most of the bed’s width. And while an inch of that foam is memory foam, there really isn’t any of that slow melting-into-the-bed feeling you get with slow-responding memory foam.

Strengths of the Plus in our testing include excellent edge support and very good motion isolation. We thought that it would suit a wide range of individuals, particularly side sleepers and back sleepers.

How About The Helix Hybrid Mattress Firmness

This is where things really get fun. Remember that sleep quiz we mentioned earlier?

After youve input your age, whether or not you sleep with a partner, your weight and height, your preferred sleep position, and your gender, the mattress that most meets your unique needs will be revealed.

Here are the variants available in the helix line, with their different characteristics :

  • Sunset: Plush with balanced support for side sleepers
  • Moonlight: Plush with extra support for contouring in all sleep positions
  • Midnight: Medium Firmness with balanced support for pressure relief for side sleepers
  • Dusk: Medium Firmness with extra support for contouring in all sleep positions
  • Twilight: Firm with balanced support for side sleepers
  • Dawn: Firm with extra support for contouring in all sleep positions

How Does The Luxe Mattress Compare To The Standard Helix Mattress

The LUXE mattress includes the zoned coil layer, which is firmer around the hips and softer at the shoulders. It also has a Tencel cover on the top layer that keeps sleepers cool. One of the most noticeable differences is that the LUXE mattress is two inches taller than the standard one. I like the higher mattress, but it may not be the right set up for everyone. The standard mattress is $999 and considerably cheaper than the LUXE version.

Are The Materials In The Helix Mattress Harmful To People Or The Environment

No, the Helix mattress is made of materials that are 100 percent produced in the U.S. and hand-assembled in their domestic factory. All materials are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified free from harmful chemicals. According to the OEKO-TEX website, if a textile article carries the Standard 100 label, you can be certain that every component of this article, i.e. every thread, button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article therefore is harmless for human health.

Helix Twilight Vs Helix Dawn

Helix Mattress Review

The Helix Twilight and the Helix Dawn are sister mattresses in the collection of Helix standard models. They are both the firmest mattresses in the lineup, with the Twilight ranking a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and the Dawn coming in at a full 8 out of 10. So how do you choose between these high-quality beds?

The Twilight provides pressure-point relief at the hips and shoulders, targeting side sleepers who prefer a more firm mattress. Unlike the Twilight, the Dawn features two layers of Helix Dynamic Foam that give the bed a bouncy, supportive feel. Thanks to a layer of memory foam on top, the Twilight feels more cushioning and snugly. We feel that both beds work well for back and stomach sleepers, but the Dawn is best for combination sleepers, and the Twilight is best for those who want to feel cradled by their mattress.

Helix Sleep Mattress Benefits

Besides the precision comfort each mattress provides they also do a great job of improving sleep in other ways too. When we look at how a mattress performs overall we also like to take motion isolation, sleeping cool and edge support into consideration too.

Below we will look at how the original Helix Sleep mattresses will do in each of these categories. Though the feel may adjust the performance slightly, the overall experience should be almost the same across the board, regardless.

Will the Helix Mattress Reduce Movement?

The Helix hybrid mattresses are great for minimizing motion transfer. Even with a responsive coil system you limit vibrations by using a individually pocketed system. Meaning none of the coils are intertwined and therefore dont create a wave of movement. This paired with dense and durable foams creates a mattress that is still responsive, but also isolates motion.

Making the Helix mattress a great choice for couples or anyone who shares a bed and likes minimal disturbance. One thing to note is that the softer options may have just a tad less movement than the firmer options, but nothing drastic. Overall, each mattress will perform optimally for keeping motion transfer to a minimum.

Additional Costs For A New Mattress

How Much Does a Mattress Cost?

The initial purchase price of a mattress is the biggest expense, but its not the only one. There are some extra expenses that youll want to budget for:

Shipping & Setup Costs: Depending on where you buy your mattress, you may have to cover the cost of shipping, in-home delivery and/or setup. If not included in the purchase price, expect to spend $50-$100 on shipping, and even more on white-glove in-home delivery. Some companies even offer removal of your old bed, for an additional fee. Many online companies now offer free shipping, so make sure to shop around.

Foundations & Accessories: Beyond the initial mattress purchase, youll also need to consider the cost of any accessories you will need. A foundation/box spring can be a major cost, and even small things like bedding can add up. The cost of these items varies significantly, but as with mattresses themselves, accessory prices tend to scale with the mattress size you purchase . Likewise, odd sizes like California King and Twin XL are more difficult to find accessories for, and many options are more expensive for these sizes.

Warranty & Returns: Some mattress warranties as well as return policies have expenses associated with them. For instance, some manufacturers require the customer to pay for return shipping during a warranty claim, or there may be restocking fees associated with a product return. Be sure to check the terms of each policy before purchasing.

Motion Isolation & Edges

Between the foams and the pocketed microcoils, you get a sleep surface that isolates movement when you sit, lie down, or shift in bed. So, if your partner gets up for a drink of water in the middle of the night, there should be little to no motion on the mattress that effects you. No more awkward wake ups in the middle of the night as a result of your sleep partner. Youll sleep soundly even if your partner is having a rough night.

One of the downfalls of a mostly-foam mattress is that it offers little to no edge support. This creates a problem when you sit on the edge of the bed to put your socks and shoes on in the morning. Youre likely to slide right off. However, Helix has included additional reinforcement around the edges in the spring coil layer that reduces the chance of this slippy-dippy sensation. Youll find that it performs better, whether you sleep toward the edge of the bed or simply sit up to put your shoes on.

How Much Is A Mattress

Although some luxury mattresses may fall outside of the range, most of them, including our top mattress choices, will fall somewhere within the $300 to $2,000 range. However, it can still be difficult to budget accurately when the range is so vast. So, what will determine whether the mattress of your dreams will be closer to the $300 end or the $2,000 end of the price spectrum?

One of the main factors in how much a mattress costs is the type of mattress. Here are a few of the most common:

  • Spring
  • Hybrid
  • Unique

Spring and foam mattresses tend to be lower in cost than hybrids or Purples hyper-elastic polymer mattresses. However, prices can also vary greatly within each mattress type. For example, the Bear Original costs around $747 for a queen-size bed, while Helix Sunset Luxe runs around $1,749 for the same size. This type of variation can be a result of differences in materials or even the notoriety of the brand itself.

Quality is also a factor of cost, but we want to be clear that high cost is not always a reflection of high quality any more than low cost is always a reflection of low quality.

Foam Mattress Cost Considerations

Helix Mattress Review Sunset Model

When it comes to foam mattresses, cost often comes down to the density of the foam used in the mattress. In general, higher density foam is better. However, you can get foam that is so dense it ceases to be comfortable or supportive. For most people, ideal foam density is between 5.3 and 6.2 pounds.

Less dense foam is cheaper because it degrades faster and it stops returning to its original shape. This means that it is becoming less supportive and wont last as long. Unfortunately, in the cheapest beds, this can even happen in a matter of a few months. You may pay less up front, but youll have to buy a new bed sooner, too.

Sometimes, you can find a foam bed with a layer of less dense foam on top of a layer of higher density foam. This can be the best of both worlds: you get the pressure-point relief of lower density foam with the support of higher density foam, for a price thats somewhere in between.

Some specialty foams like the copper-infused memory foam shown here are more expensive.

Specialty foams, like those infused with copper or gel, will also be more expensive. Manufacturers claim that these additives make beds cooler, more comfortable, or both.

Polyfoam is different from memory foam, and it is less expensive, too. You may want to try a polyfoam bed before you buy it, though, or at least get a bed with a good return policy. Some people dont notice much of a difference between the foams, while others dont like the polyfoam nearly as much as the memory foam.

What Do The Helix Mattresses Feel Like

All of the Helix mattresses feature a hybrid construction that layers foam over coils. Despite these similarities, each model boasts its own unique feel.

The Helix Sunset has a balanced foam feel with a very plush top. The plushness of the comfort layer allows sleepers to sink in a bit and gives this mattress a slow-moving feel.

Even though its fairly soft, the Helix Moonlight has a very bouncy feel, especially compared to the less-responsive Sunset.

Much like the Helix Sunset, the Helix Midnight has a balanced feel with a slow-moving top layer. While sleepers sink into this top layer a bit, the Midnight is decidedly firmer than the Sunset.

The Helix Dusk has a firm, bouncy feel. Thats thanks to a dynamic foam in the top layer as well as the coils in the support layer.

Like the Helix Sunset and Midnight, the Helix Twilight has a slower-moving feel on top. Even though the comfort layer is a bit more enveloping, this is still a firm mattress.

Much like the Helix Dusk, the Helix Dawn has a bouncy, firm feel resulting from dynamic foam and coils .

Common Signs That It Needs Replacing

Its easy to forget exactly how long youve owned a mattress. But, as a general rule, after about seven or so years your mattress might start to show signs of normal wear and tear, including dips, scuffs and yellowing.

If it is still keeping you healthy and sleeping well, then it may have more time left. But if the following are true, then consider replacing it soon:

  • You have more aches and pains, including back pain, and frequently wake throughout the night
  • The mattress is turning yellow due to ageing
  • It has tears and worn patches on it
  • It feels stifling to sleep on
  • You sleep better in any other bed

For more information on why the above points are a no-no when it comes to healthy sleep, read our 5 signs you need to break up with your current mattress feature. What you sleep on makes a big difference to how well you snooze, so it pays to get this right. We always recommend buying the best quality of mattress you can afford because it will last you much longer, saving you money in the long-term, and you wont be part of the landfill problem.
